Transfer Thread

For me it was he lost something, in the early days, he got the ball, whole stadium stood up, something was going to happen.

Still have a fondness for him, but I felt there was another level in him, there should have been a place for him in Poch's team.

He started cutting inside and lay it off rather than run at the fullbacks and whil it in. Dunno if that was instruction but he lost something (as you say).

Good shout about reminding you of Lennon, i really think this kid ( still only 22) has a lot of ability and he has a lot of promise. IMO we need to give him the time to show it.

Definitely give him time to show it, and time to develop further. But I also think that can happen without starting every game. And next season we'll hopefully have a lot of games and even more need of a stronger squad with more quality options.

Agreed.

So far Johnson reminds me more of the "moments of real joy" Lennon rather than the "whole stadium stood up" Lennon. And I think it will take time of he's ever to become a "whole stadium" player.

Do not disagree, he is still a kid really and coming into a massive club ( which we are) can be daunting. I think the talent is there though.

I don't care how much we spent on him. I'm not saying he is a bad player. Just don't think he is (at the moment) one of the best wingers in the europe. I want us to be challenging for titles. For that we need some of the best players in the world.

Could he become the next bale etc... maybe? Don't see it yet.

We will always need to upgrade on what we have, if we want to win the prem or cl.
Our model doesn't allow us to sign the best players in the world. We sign players with a huge upside who have the potential to be top tier, and quite clearly Johnson is one of those. His raw pace and dribbling is a real threat, as is so often the way the end product for wingers is the final detail that takes time. You get some talented youngsters who look top quality straight away, but then have a drop off later - see Dele, whilst other youngsters take a little longer before flourishing fully.

Johnson has been bought for the long term and hasn't been at this club for 6 months yet. I'll bet by this time next season Johnson is flying.....

Vicario, udogie and maddison were bought this summer. In their positions i'd argue they are up there with the best in europe/world.

Again i haven't said johnson is bad. Hope he comes good. But if we could get a raphina (yes i know he's injured) or chiesa or someone on that level. It would be an upgrade. Soule or bakayoko as younger alternatives.

Yes i'm going full football manager.

They weren’t when we signed them. Maddison was easily the highest rated, but he was at Leicester and you wouldn’t call him world class. I still wouldn’t call any of them world class.

Depends on your definition of world class. The prem is probably the best league in the world. They have so far this season been some of it's best players. Making them some of the best players in the world at this time.

Johnson so far hasn't matched that level. Not saying he's not good. Not saying we should get rid. Just saying if kulu goes in the middle we'd need another right winger. If we get one i'd like to go for one of the best in the world or someone that can be.

You need to do it for longer than 6 months to be world class.

Chill, Winston.

We all want instant success - like yesterday - but there's a business aspect to be considered. Can't just chuck monetary numbers around like they are molecules of air.

Johnson was bought for a substantial fee. He is showing every indication that he will develop into a player worthy of that fee. Great clubs just don't buy. They build and develop from within. We're seeing that process happening with Johnson. He's been handed a very challenging task coping with an ever-changing set of team mates each match and showing improved performances.

When we're fully healthy, Kulu and Johnson can run the right wing very nicely. If we qualify for Champions League - very important this year - then we will have money - and the overwhelming need - to go whole hog on other wing options. For now, we're well served.

Being linked to Joao Gomes as an alternative to Gallagher.

22 year old was signed by wolves a year ago directly from Brazil for £15m.

Price rumoured at £35m roughly due to their ffp concerns.

I think that could be an option. Either as a regular thing or a sometimes thing.

What we miss in the front line when Kulusevski isn't there is ball retention, ability to do useful things when facing the wrong way and good play in tight areas.

Even when he's there we do miss someone that can just go "fudge it" and dribble past his man.

Without Kulusevski wide now we miss too much of what he brings. I think we would really miss him if he was out injured for a while. We should look for someone that will add more of what mostly only he brings to our front three, while also adding what he and others doesn't.

Imo we should do that regardless of if Kulusevski is moved more permanently to a different role or not. We need that in our team/squad. But this January is probably not the time for that.
Maddison

So we spent, what, £45 million for Johnson just to make him a substitute? Hasn't had the easiest introduction with playing on so many changing starting 11s, but he's making some good plays to set up chances and goals. Unlucky not to have scored a few himself. Starting to remind me of Aaron Lennon.
Johnson will get there I’m sure
He needs a bit more coaching and some time

I only watch Spurs games and MotD (I run through talk) regularly and have not noticed him as a standout player. What does he have?

Emery been talking about FFP in relation to upcoming windows for Villa, seems we could be in a real position of strength soon.

I hope we're keeping an eye on who is effected and drawing up lists of potential targets
I was thinking we should throw money at Douglas from Villa
That’s the one I’d like
