OMT * Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham *

Also missing Gil. But we have Brazil's first-choice forward sitting on our bench. That is quite Cityesque.

When he's trying to break, he tends to have at least 2 defenders on him. Makes it neigh on impossible. We need to make a couple of extra passes to release more runners. We're too predictable. We try to break quickly, but if you just surround Son and Kane, we'll play into your hands.

Son did get an assist tonight.
Can’t make the passes as he has just lost it normally so we’re already back tracking

Another thing I would like to say is none of our players are bad. You do not get to play in the prem if you are. The difference between realy top players is consistency. I love Sonny but he is so inconsistent. Golden boot last year now looks a shadow of himself and over the last few seasons he would hit a purple patch and assist and score but then go for 10 games being anonymous. On the other hand Harry does it season after season, if it were not for Haaland this season I would put money on him getting the golden boot. We have lots of players who look so good for a few games but you know there is a mess up waiting to happen, or they will have an anonymous few games.
I am not the biggest fan of Emerson Royale but have always said he is a good defender. IMHO he was our mom tonight. But it is square pegs in round holes he is not the wing back that Conte wants but he has actually had good games the last 2 out.

That was a comfortable win.
Lloris barely did anything.
Fulham pressed us like madmen for the first half hour, so of course they looked dangerous, but then they faded.
Hats off to our boys for getting a good, solid win at a difficult ground.

Much needed win, got a right old thick and fast set coming up, City, AC, West Ham, Chelsea....good to beat those that we probably should, thats the difference, we beat Villa and Brentford and we are cooking now, would have taken alot of heat off, but such is Spurs

Important result, and the structure in the second half looked improved with the 5-4-1 not sitting as deep as previously. Fulham have taken points off better than us, so while champagne isn't flowing yet, this appress to be a step in the right direction.
Fulham have not taken points off better sides than us. They have lost all their games against the sides above them in the table bar Brighton (who may end up ahead of us once they play their two games in hand). They're a midtable team and we should be performing much better than we did against them.

Gary Neville talking a hell of a lot of sense.
£200m spent across two transfer windows is fully backing Conte.
5th in the Lge. Still in Champions League. Still in FA Cup.

I really think if Arsenal weren't having an unbelievable (literally unbelievable!), there wouldn't be the brain dead Levy Out chants.
The thing is we are 5th in the league because Pool and Chelsea have laid an egg this season.

We're in the CL by the skin of our teeth in what was an "easy" group.

In the FA Cup we have played one game: against Portsmouth.

With the backing we gave Conte we should be on 2pts/game form and playing some modicum of attractive football. We have more quality options than we did last year (because we backed Conte), but are performing worse. I don't think Arsenal has anything to do with any of this. The Levy Out chants would have been coming, even if Arsenal was fighting to not get relegated.

Lloris got the highest rating of all our players. And I don't think it was because of his sublime passing stats.

As have we and I do think that the World Cup has had a big part in this. Why?

Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Arsenal and Manchester United either had no European football or were involved in the less competitive group stage of the Europa League.

Why is this key? Because Saudi Sportswashing Machine had greater periods of rest between matches whilst the other two could rotate their squads to keep players fresh. Manchester United ought to have topped their group, failed to and so face a tough test just to stay in the Europa League. That from a group that was easier than our Champions League group.

So the clubs that could keep players fresh, could more easily rotate and gave players rest time to mitigate risk of injuries take up 3 of the top 4 places.

The other place being taken by the ludicrously rich Emirates Marketing Project with their deep squad who in themselves have also not been performing at their very best.

Meanwhile ourselves, Chelsea and Liverpool have had injury hit seasons. Each team has lost key players for matches and suffered poor form. In addition to that Chelsea have had a change in manager which didn’t help them, and our manager has lost people in his life that were close to him including Gian Piero Ventrone who as well as being close to Conte and our squad was also a key member of the personnel at the club.

I think had this been a standard season then the league table would be looking different to how it is now.

Definitely agree.

We do not have the players to really consistently play through a good high press like that. We don't have the players ourselves to play a proper high press for most of the game.

There will be periods where we're under pressure, struggling, suffering. Unless we get significantly better players.

We need to defend with resilience in those periods. Particularly in the second half we did, but less so in the first. And we need to avoid silly and costly individual errors. Time will tell if we can weed those out with these players.

We also need to be a threat on the break, play through pressure at least sometimes. That was missing in that first half, too many sloppy involvements. I think we can do it, but we look short on confidence.

This is something to build on. As have previous games that haven't been as bad as the results would indicate. But it's easier with a good result.

Oh, and Fulham are a rather good team. We did well.

I was saying ‘take the win and move on’. I feel as if we should be winning at Fulham if we are wanting to set minimum target of top 4. Our performance wasn’t the best. We lacked creative spark and it wouldn’t have been the most exciting game for neutrals to have watched. But the most important thing is that we secured the three points. I didn’t overly celebrate as it was a good important win BUT we’re still 5th and that’s hit something a club like ourselves that wants to be the best should overly celebrate.

We need to win and then focus on our next match. We need to win so regularly that it becomes a process. That’s not to say that we don’t enjoy a win, but instead it’s to know that it is but one step in the direction that we want to be taking on a much more regular basis. We can’t be celebrating mediocrity but must be pushing for a minimum of top 4. Once we get that we can celebrate, refocus over the summer and go again with the target of winning the league. My mindset is probably too bold and ambitious but let’s aim for the stars and not forget important words spoken by the legendary Sir Bill Nicholson:

‘If you don’t win anything, you’ve had a bad season’

‘Spurs have got to be the best in the land, not the second best’

‘It’s magnificent to be in Europe, and this club – a club like Tottenham Hotspur; if we’re not in Europe…. we’re nothing. We’re nothing.’

‘It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. And we of Spurs have set our sights very high, so high in fact that even failure will have in it an echo of glory.’

So let’s heed those words and go and kick on from here. Last night was just about three points and building towards syccess. Now let’s go, work hard, and get that success.

What Nicholson said was true at that time but the footballing world has changed beyond recognition and without limitless funds it's impossible to compete with the super rich for a sustainable time.

Doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t aim for the highest point. No one thought Arsenal would be at the top now and performing as they are. So it’s time that we aimed for the highest level. If we are just going to accept finishing 4th to 6th we may as well pack it all up as we will never be successful again.
