***OMT: Mighty Spurs vs Manure***

They are the 5th/6th/7th best team in the division.

I don’t think so, they are where they are because we are not the only team blinded by the badge, teams roll over for them because in their heads it’s Keane, Scholes, Beckham and Giggs still.

Boro was a harder game and they can’t get out of the championship.

Sorry don’t agree with that at all. You want someone tight to Ronaldo not giving him all the time in the world to control the ball and pick his spot. I like Dier but that was really poor defending.

You don’t score from that far out against a competent keeper. The ball has too far to travel.

I don't think he did, honestly. It seemed like he was stooping to head it in and then shouted as the goal went in - didn't look to me like he was mocking Maguire or anything.

Why would he? He isn't Brazilian, he's a hapless Englishman Romero doesn't know and is at the opposite end of the field to him, so no chance at a flashpoint in game.
He absolutely shouted in his face mate. I watched it several times. It wasn’t clever.

It was pathetic mate…. He laughed in his face and then cost us more points by (again) losing his player for their winner.

Age takes away your speed. It takes away none of your technique/shot power, which is what mattered there.

Hugo was never saving that. He could be a six-legged jetpack-equipped Buffon and he wouldn't have saved it, imo.

He missed it by half an inch, despite not moving his feet or preparing for the shot at all, in the age Ronaldo had to take a couple of touches and get the shot away.

He’ll be blaming himself for that one.

They are where they are because that is their level…. Just as with every team in rhe league

Watch it again, he doesn’t react, he’s not on his toes, Ronaldo had three touches and he hadn’t even begun to set himself.

Mistakes were made elsewhere, but that was a shot that should have been saved.
A shot that never should have happened too. Bentancour is the wrong side of Fred. Then dier moves backwards, then makes himself small. Lloris maybe could have done better but it’s a great team effort.

We're being hyper-critical in my view. Half a dozen times in a game, something like that happens and there is no goal. It was just a bit of brilliance from him. Hats off but looking to blame people? We're being harsh.

Neither Bentancur nor Hojbjerg are 'sitters, though. This is the mistake that people make with the pair of them - their entire career, people have assumed they screen the defence, which isn't true.

Ruben Neves is a 'sitter'. Matic is a 'sitter'. Players that sit deep, fill gaps, cover shots, get out to their men.

Bentancur and Hojbjerg are both Khedira-esque ball winners, best closing high and winning balls all over the field. They are good tacklers - they are not good positionally, because their best role involves a free roaming assignment to close down and tackle.

In the peak Madrid team under Mourinho, in a midfield duo of Alonso and Khedira, Alonso was the screen, not Khedira. Khedira rampaged up field winning it high and laying it off to Ozil/Ronaldo/Benzema et al. Alonso sat deep and screened the backline + played it forward from deep.

We lack that player. Winks is useless. Skipp, Bentancur and Hojbjerg are all functionally identical. A positionally disciplined 'sitting' midfielder? We've lacked one since..well, actually, probably since Huddlestone.

Parker, Sandro, Palacios, Wanyama, Dembele, Sissoko, Hojbjerg, Skipp, Bentancur...all best as free-roaming destroyers. Not sitters.

And every top team has a sitter. Rodri, Matic, Xhaka + Partey, Jorginho, Fabinho et al. Even Spam have Rice who can even drop in as CB when needed.

It's basics though isn't it, you don't need to be a sitter to know someone should be sitting, and that if you are playing CM and the other one isn't doing it you need to drop in.

Son isn't an FB, but if Reggie gets knocked down on an overlap I damn well expect him to drop back and fill in there.

Ah the good old blame game.

There were loads of mistakes tonight from a lot of players. Pinning the loss on one or two is unfair.

Yep, we need to thoroughly dissect every one though, we won't stop making them until we understand why we did.
