Antonio Conte - officially NOT the coach of THFC

Surprise surprise.

Too late now though, could eek a point with that system at city but even the solid form that would follow till the end of the season if we stuck with that system, would now not be enough to get 4th. You cannot throw fairly routine 6 points in the bin in the space of a few days and expect to get away with it.

In the fa cup however if we get some luck with teams going out etc then maybe we could win it. If however we continue with 343, then we quite possibly go out in the very next round at boro.

I think 3-5-2 would be a better fit with the players we have, and would make us better.
Basically just play Kulu as a 10 behind Kane-Son, and him dropping into midfield when defending.

Lloris
Romero - Sanchez - Dier
Doherty/Royal - Bentancour - Skipp - Reguilon/Sess
Kulusevski
Kane - Son

Mours isn't good enough or effective enough to justify playing the 3 forwards. We will lack a bit of width if we go to 352 but in principle the WBs should provide that. Playing just the 2 up front also allows Moura to come in for Son or Kane if one of them is performing poorly.

We need the 3 in the middle, our centre of midfield is below average as it is. They don't cover enough traits or attributes to work effectively in any 2 pairings and then to then go into matches against decent opposition knowingly letting them outnumber us in midfield exacerbating low quality we have in that area is suicidal.

Can only hope Conte has now come to this conclusion having seen the improvements in the performance once kulu came on centrally against wolves.

Just wish he’d realised it sooner as those 6 points we have thrown away will cost us dear.

Against teams managed by brick managers who can’t organise a defence though…

As much about their deficiencies as what we did well in those games.

Its not about the opposition defence per se. Its about the control of games that the extra midfielder allows us to exert.

We go from being a team that is easy to press and dominate possession, to one that is able to control games and provide a stable platform from which to play a normal game of football.

200%

Not saying I wouldn’t play 3-5-2 as can certainly see the benefits but that stat is hardly conclusive. Conte has had 11 PL games, and its not the highest xG for both games as we had an identical xG vs Southampton when not playing 3-5-2. With the exception of Leicester game our xG has ranged around 2-2.5 regardless of formation, and we have only played twice in the 3-5-2 so you can’t really conclude anything from an xG perspective…..

Spot on imo.

Small sample, different opposition and games, mostly fairly small differences.

Agree that playing with a midfield three more often could be a good idea, but that's not something that can be concluded on based on those numbers.

I recall soton away was another meh performance until they went down to 10 men.

I agree the sample size is small but that is because conte nearly always uses the 343.

There is however a clear difference in how we are able to play between the two formations and it cries out that surely we must try 3 in midfield more.

It would be a small sample size even if it was a 50/50 mix between the two formations.

There are positives and negatives with both formations. The negatives of the midfield two are currently more obvious because of recent performances and results. Had Conte played mostly a midfield three perhaps the weaknesses of that approach would have been the most obvious.

There's also the issue of player availability. GLC, Alli and Ndombele obviously weren't trusted. Bentancur and Kulusevski are still in a process of integration. A midfield three recently would often have resulted in no trusted or integrated midfield option on the bench.

I just don't get the confidence in which you state this opinion. Yes, it could be a good idea. But it could also be a wash or even worse than what Conte has done so far.

Personally I would like a midfield three more often. Partly because Lucas and Son have imo seen a drop in form.

Didn't conte change the formation at chelsea when he realised it wasn't working as well as he hoped?

He's doesn't seem to be a one dimensional manager. One formation, one tactic that's it.

We're a work in progress. As fans we want instant results, especially with 4th spot being open. But we might have to have patience.

Yeah I dont see him as being stubborn at all. Against wolves he ditched the 343 after about 25 mins, so even he knows it isnt working and suspect he will switch to 352 from now on.

it doesn't matter what the formation is if you make the kinds of mistakes we have in the last two games

Conte has a system he's trying to implement, it'll take time, he's only had a handful of games, he has to give it time

I agree the errors were absolutely extraordinary. Conte said he didnt know how to even begin to comment on them. As for me I’ve never seen anything like it in such quick succession at this level. It was staggering and I dont even know how to begin suggesting a punishment for the players involved. A fine doesnt even come close. Any other business and gross errors of that degree would result in a suspension. We cant really do that so I guess no pay for about 6-12 months would seem appropriate.

But anyway regardless of the errors, since the leicester game when we played so well in a 352, we have played 4 games and been dominated in all of them. 3 of those were at home against non top 6 clubs. We deserved to concede many many goals in those games and the good work we did do came from counter attacks.

This is no way to play football effectively.

I have, about 15 times last season.

I think thats clearly an indication that he already has one foot out of the door this summer :-(

I think he may be gone sooner than that. He looked devoid of interest on the sideline on Sunday.

And, if he goes, it’s going to be very very tough for Levy. Home games will be toxic.
