AVB Press Conference

I like our new aim. After aiming for only top 4 for the last 20 years or so, it is good to know we are aiming for league title now. It doesn't matter if we are capable of winning it or not. The important thing is we should try to win it. We should change our mentality from a top 4 team to a team who are challenging for the league title.

Now you can see why Levy removed Redknapp. Don't think Redknapp ever talked about going for league title. His aim was always finishing in 4th. Hopefully AVB will bring us to that next level. Even if we fail under AVB, we can always be proud of the fact we did try. Well done Levy !=D>

I quite like how AVB called out Harry saying one week we can win the title and in the next saying 4th is a great achievement. At Porto he was extremely demanding but made sure it wasn't framed as pressure, it was simply the expectation to win and the players should be driven towards doing that. On the one hand, having realistic goals is important but on the other, if our squad is full of quality and could maybe sustain a title challenge if we got really lucky and everyone else was having a bad season for example, then maybe what it needs is that little extra push where it means failure is seen as unacceptable.

Apparently when asked at the start of every season what Everton's objectives are Moyes always says 'to win the league'. And they are a team generally considered to have a good winning mentality. They may not win all their games, because they don't have the quality to do that, but it can be argued they consistently punch above their weight.

He was asked the question around xmas time, going by the squads city and utd had,he said we had an outside chance of winning it.So we went out and got saha and nielsen on loan and sold pav,the good old days!!!

Mixed opening press conf for me, but I don't really hold much stock what Managers say in public as 90% of them flimflam and/or just do the PR bit.

Wish he hadn't mentioned the title though. I cringed when Redknapp used to talk about us potentially being able to win it, and I cringed again when AVB was spouting the same nonsense.

Nothing wrong with it at all - especially given the clever way in which he phrased it.

Good that he's set the bar high.

And, unlike Harry, he won't change his story from week to week.

He said titles and mentioned 2008....he means cups.

That's the good thing about AVB talking about the title. He's not only talked about it, but he's also called out the previous manager for changing his story and expectations from one week to the next.

He's put the pressure on himself, and he isn't hiding from it. If AVB fails, he will hold his hands and say so, because it was the target he set. If we suddenly don't challenge, he isn't going to change his tune and say 4th is a great achievement. And that is refreshing.

Also nice that he has the balls to say it. And if he has the confidence, you can't help but think maybe we can do something special. This league is going to be so tight this season, but I fully expect to see us up there.

Can the words "Harr Redknapp" please be banned from this forum? Pro harry people accuse the anti Harry people of not letting it go and the anti Harry mob can't resist in having digs at him.

Let it go FFS!

Hope you're right, because AVB used to contradict himself in the media a lot.

I think if you are right, and AVB contradicts himself and starts saying backtracking from his statement, then you should absolutely be able to have at it, and enjoy you're prediction being right.

Although he never specified a timeframe, and he didn't say 'this season we will challenge for the league' as far as I can see, so maybe he deserves at least 2 years before we see if he is really going to do it and hold himself to that statement.

Isn't this the poster who said numerous times he'll give our new manager as much time as he did his pin-up favourite Arry and not judge before the first transitional season.

He's already having a swipe from a few sound-bites/his very first interview (which was great, btw and not a single fan has complained) creating assumptions based on personal prejudice, stating opinion as fact, and a general pro-Arry/anti-Levy agenda - now imagine what would happend after our first loss.

TalkSport clearly didn't like it... too ****y, bitched about (Billionaire) Abramovitch ...and isn't Harry... what's TO like?
