Euro 2020

Do people think Southgate “picks” the penalty takers? This was absolutely 100% discussed during the week. They would have had team discussions: “who wants to take one?” Rashford and Sancho put their hands up. “You’re not starting, would you been ok to come on late if needed?”

In terms of the penalties, a failure of the whole squad, not individuals. But overall a great tournament for England.

The manager is 100% accountable for his penalty takers

It should always be the managers decision imo, players shouldn’t get asked or offered, they should get told.

All on Southgate, IMO. Set it up so well, got a great start, but mismanaged everything from there on.

Yep, exactly. It was a gimme. At home we had the beating of them with a little bit more bravery and belief. Lots of little details, starting with the HT team talk. It is clear Italy will improve second half and fight back. It is crucial Southgate impresses the importance of us sticking to our plan, retaining possession, and imposing our game on them. Put the occasion to one side and fight. What happened we capitulated. Then the subs. Rather than be brave and say put Grealish on for Philips he takes off Rice who was one of the few players able to retain possession. He leaves Rashford and Sancho off the pitch - potential game winners - and brings on Henderson and Sucko.

Don't think England will get another chance to win something as easy as this for some time.

Surely that’s worse? How could you dictate that to someone? What is likely one of the biggest moments of their life? They must have a say. And it would have been discussed and practise in training — if not, that is if a failure of management.
