Next Manager?

I think you can determine a level of 'fit' based on their experience. Paratici was at Juve - a club with a huge name, history and reputation and pulling power for players. He mainly signed players who were in their prime, using that reputation. He might be great at that, but we need to be signing a different type of player - younger, cheaper, with potential, lower wages. Of course, he might still be able to do that, but his experience hasnt been in that area it seems.

Its similar to Conte - won loads everywhere, but the 'fit' with SPurs was questionnable given the available funds for transfers. Ditto Jose

For most of that time he was Moratta's deputy. We've got no way of knowing whether they were following Moratta or the club's transfer strategy.

The plan was to get in a DoF and a manager that fits the profile Levy wanted. Because we chose not to rush and speak to several potentials for both roles before making a final decision doesn’t mean there was no plan and you really know nothing about Levy if you think he doesn’t have a plan- of course whether that is the right plan or not is always open to discussion. In football things change quickly and plans have to be altered accordingly….

Everything about the last two months very clearly shows there was no plan.

The sacking of Mourinho which saw him replaced (a full day or two later, after an obvious scramble around for someone internal to do the job) by a rookie 29 year old manager; the careering around between candidates with completely different profiles; the leaks from the club as it looked like a high profile candidate was close to being appointed, followed by complete radio silence as the plans for that latest candidate went tits up; the statement about recognising the club’s true DNA (Nearly men? Nice stadium but no trophies? Providers of PR gaffes par excellence?) and building something new, only to negotiate with the ultimate two-years-and-I’m-gone coach.

The DoF thing has only been mentioned by the club in the last fortnight. It’s an obvious reaction to the barrage of fan and media criticism which has come Levy’s way in recent weeks. If it had been thought about prior to that, why the 5 week wait to get someone in place? (Is he in place? Has there been an actual appointment yet?)

If you really believe there was any kind of plan you are in full ostrich mode, I’m afraid.

The only ‘plan’ we were left with in the end was to find someone who didn’t mind being 5th choice.

Think plan a was get someone in to try to turn it around. Now i think we've gone plan b, total rebuild.

If there is a time for a rebuild nows probably it. Clubs across europe needing to sell. Kane looking to be off. Might not be surprised if lloris, toby, dier followed him as well as the likes of winks and lamela. Replace them with the next generation of up and coming stars. Write next season off but have a long term aim to challenge.

They do need to be altered I agree . Looks like we are on plan D or E to me now.

Back in the City today
Went in my usual Cafe for brekkie, Italian owned and run
One is a Roma fan, said he is a brilliant manager who will play attacking football and our team will be great to watch and a majority of Roma fans are gutted to have him leave
They also said the DoF is a decent snatch too and will sign some quality

Is Fonse the Portuguese Potter?
Never heard of him but like everyone they should be supported and given a fair chance.

Based on what I've read he seems to fit the profile people always talk about - young, modern tactical thinker playing progressing football with quick transitions etc.

I know it's not a last chance for Levy but ordinarily it should be because if this doesnt work and having gone from a CL final and finishing 2nd in the league to potentially falling into mid table if this doesn't work with our best player leaving isn't a good look at all.

I think they are all, with the exception of one, in Ukraine.

I'm sure there's some bloke out there who's won the Bhutanese First Division 20 times in a row. Surely he's more than qualified to manage Spurs on that evidence!

A) we have zero young players of note outside of Tanganga and Skipp. Parott hasn't made it, Scarlett and Devine are literal teenagers. Why this 'he works with youngsters' thing is so attractive is beyond me given that our squad has been filled with old codgers for a very long yime.

B) all that also applies to Eddie Howe. I take it you wouldn't be in favour of that appointment, though.

The guy was tossed by Roma after two seasons, finishing 7th and shipping six goals to Ole Gunnar f*cking Solskjaer as he was booted out the door...in favour of the man we fired for being atrocious. That's how bad Fonseca is - he was replaced by Jose f*cking Mourinho.

I suspect a good deal of disappointment is warranted if (if) this guy turns out to be our new Christian Gross of a coach.

They were all underwhelming, and loads of people said so, directly, to their faces even.

This guy is in that exact category of underwhelming cheap bargain bin punt. Except he doesn't even have the 'club legend' thing to fall back on.

I think the 'young players' he will be expected to work with are the likes of Rodon, Tanganga, Reguilon, Sessegnon, Skipp, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Bergwin, sanchez. All these players are 24 or under and will form the core of the squad for the next couple of years. Hojberg and Alli are only 25. I also expect us to push to sell a couple of older players this summer (Lamela, Sissoko) and try and sign a younger centre half or other young talents from Europe (anderson from Fulham is one example).

All in all i can't feel anything other than disappointed in the appointment, if it happens. It feels like a massive risk!

For most of that time he was Moratta's deputy. We've got no way of knowing whether they were following Moratta or the club's transfer strategy.

I think that supports my point. From the outside, its not obvious how his experience fits the need. If it was his strategy then it looks directed at a different type of player. If it wasnt his strategy, then it still doesnt look like he has the experience of signing the type of player. Might of course succeed, but from the outside the fit for the role looks a little odd as I said

I completely agree with Derp

I will say, I think sacking Poch to arrive at this point is just…it was a mistake.

But since we’re here, with our constraints, squad and situation with everything else, it feels like a smarter appointment. I’d like us to be the club that attracts and backs Conte, but we just aren’t. So considering where we’re at, I quite like Derp

I’d need to read a lot more into him. But someone that plays attacking football. Someone that uses young players. It’s what we need to make a push for the top 4. The fact is I don’t think any of us really know enough about what was happening above him at Roma to know whether he was good enough or not, in the same way we don’t know everything about what Paratici was asked to do to know if he is a really good shout for us either.

I think we need to see how this plays out. It’s a fine appointment given our situation, and I completely agree there is no way Lampard or OGS should be seen as better just because they were names.

I do think this means we are lucky if we get another year out of Kane, and I think we are really committing to being a club with lesser finances, using youth. It probably means a title is far off, but we’re doing what we need to do to probably give us a chance of CL. But we are where we are. Short of getting new owners, I think we need to do what makes sense for our club. Trying to sign bigger names managers and assuming they are miracle workers is lazy and won’t work. Being strategically aligned, trusting a DOF, these are the things I want to see our club doing. If we do it, we have a chance.
What we do know…
The Dof awhile brought the players in he inherited got the boot (Monchi) before he really started. The club was slated for it at the time
He was replaced by Petrachi who also got binned
Pinto joined late 2020
The club was sold during his time too
What’s key is he joined a basket case of a club that hasn’t actually helped him at all
I have no idea if he is any good as a manager but a I said yesterday his failure at Roma in points per game and draw percentages would have got us 4th last season
His team also had very very high quality chance creation numbers so he must be doing singling right

This is Daniel Levy all over. I hope people see that - if this bloke comes, this is what the main priority was, none of those risible lies about pursuing Conte or the club leaking to Alasdair Gold that the top candidate 'would test the club's financial resolve'.

This is bargain bin. This is the cheapest option.

This is what Daniel Levy is, and always has been.

Care for Spurs? You're having a f*cking laugh.

Christ. Paulo Fonesca, the man who lost, what, 7-2 to Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer?
My posting was in jest, but you took it seriously.. Levy is going to spend when her can spend. I think the last two windows and the appointment of Jose have shown that.

Now as far as Fonseca is concerned, I'd worry more about the fact he made 6 subs in a game then that he lost 6-2 to Manure. That being said, though, his style of football does align with the Tottenham Way, so let's see what he can do first before slagging him off.

Fonseca & Paratici would suggest to me that we've done what most people have been calling for and appointed a DoF who has in turn got in a manager of his choosing

Watch as they say, it is not Campo. All very well appointing a DOF but has to be the right one etc etc Seem like some are hell-bent on having a whinge at the moment.

Yes that is what most people were calling for. But what they actually meant was appoint a dof and coach that they wanted. You see people don't want levy to leave football matters to a dof, they want levy to leave football matters to them. Because fans know more than the people that work in the game.

Yes true.

Hopefully regardless our budget situation we see some good footballing decisions and progress, a ruthless rebuild towards a more balanced side and high quality football.

And that levy doesn't stand in the way to sabotage the process or worse just make this another pr exercise to improve his image while he still interferes with football matters from behind the scenes.

Guess we'll never know and shouldn't care. If we enjoy the football that's all that matters to us. And it should translate to increased viewership and revenue for the club and sponsors.

I don’t really follow Italian football that closely but what would the expectations have been for Roma last season? Was he sacked for political reasons rather than performances?
