Next Manager?

Interesting piece

- Another factor is that Pochettino has struggled with being away from his family during the pandemic. He has been living in a hotel in Paris with his assistants, Jesús Pérez and Toni Jiménez, and his son, Sebastiano, who works as PSG’s fitness trainer. He is understood to be missing his wife and his other son, Maurizio, who are in London.

So he wants to come back to London?
Fine. Not really a reason to give him back his old job though. The whole things smacks of the type of sentimentality we’d laugh at Liverpool for.
I also don’t like the way he arranges jobs for his family in the clubs who employ him. Conflict of interest there.

Sissoko will go because of his age. But I'd see Alderwireld, Doherty and Hart as the first 3 out of the door under Poch. Alderwireld because of their fall-out, Doherty because we'll stay 4-2-3-1, and Hart because he's a pub player. I think he trusts the others though and probably has rolls for them, albeit not as starters.

I'd see a first season Poch team as something like:

----------------------------Lloris
Foyth------Sanchez---------New young Verts-------Regulion/Sess

------------------Hojbjerg--------Lo Celso

----Ndombele----------Alli-----------Son

---------------------Kane

It's sort of what Mason was getting to, and sort of what he did 7 years ago, specifically get our quickest transitioner (Lo Celso; then Mason) into CM, while developing the talented player who held on to the ball too long (Ndombele; then Dembele) for a bit in AM

Foyth is gone mate ..

If Sanchez starts for us again, I will lose my fudging mind

I just don't think that works in a 4-2-3-1, I don't see Ndombele out right, don't see PEH, GLC, Alli holding the middle of the park in the PL (outnumbered all the time)

You state it was burn out with no facts to back that up. Pochettino could equally have been snappy with the media due to having enough of not getting the incomings and outgoings that he requested.

The argument about Poch being given time is partly based on him having earned that time (which personally I think he had, we'd be virtually bankrupt now without Poch's 4 solid years of over achievement) but more based on the fact that he was sacked before he got a chance to play his (IMO competely inadequate number of) 3 new signings.

Levy spent £12 million sacking Pochettino having just given him £70 odd million net to spend before seeing Poch's team with those 3 players included..... The chairman then brought in a different manager with a completely different philosophy and then spent another £10m or whatever sacking him after giving him £90 million net or whatever it was to spend. Absolute car crash leadership that is, I'd expect the shareholders to demand the replacement of a CEO in charge of that sort of misdirection of a FTSE 100 company (and Levy's package is higher than most FTSE 100 CEOs by the way).

Stopped reading when you said Levy gave the managers x amount of money ... he didn't and doesn't he thinks of what players the club needs, not what the manager wants. Massive fail on his behalf. Apart from that he is a great chairman with this massive massive flaw.

It's just the latin way. Life is more about family and community, rather than our Thatcherite individualism.

Levy can't complain anyway. His wife is his PA and his son's whole career is plummy roles in Tavistock (ENIC's parent group) companies:

If Poch comes in, he knows who did sweet F A for him and hopefully will cull them ala Kaboul, Adebayor, Capoue etc ... Enter the Scarlett, Skipp, Devine, Cirkin

This is an interesting point. Would a period of reflection help us/Poch? Like he might have a game plan and know exactly what needs to be done. As opposed to a manager coming in cold and taking a year or more to test out players - see Mourinho.

Emery said the other day that Foyth's fate isn't in their hands. I think it might be up to the player to decide.

Ndombele would be doing similar to Eriksen used to - floating, interchanging with Alli, and with a pretty free role to just create.

This would mainly be a side for the bottom 14 sides in the league. We'd probably want Skipp or another defensive player in CM against the rest of the top 6

Foyth AND Sanchez? Do you not want us to keep clean sheets GB?

If that were the case, he would have a chance to build something different but I have seen nothing during his tenure to suggest he'll kick out any of the old guard. Once the results and performances went downhill, his starting XI hardly changed. I can't think of anyone who managed to force his way into the first team - even Moura was back on the bench for the CL final. The only time I've read something suggesting he wanted to get rid of someone was when we sold Walker.

In any case, he doesn't really strike me as a ruthless manager. Having said that, it must be incredibly difficult to get rid of someone who had a big hand in helping you achieve some measure of success on the pitch. It's not as easy as discarding a guy on Football Manager - but that's one of the reasons why I'm not too keen on the idea of having him back so soon.

I disagree with this. I think he wanted to be ruthless and wasn't allowed to be because Levy wouldn't sell players. With Levy not selling players, it means he had to work with what he had and make the best of it.

Everyone is assuming if Poch comes back, it's Winks and Dier in prominent roles again, back to exactly how it was. I don't think it would be. I think he'd be bombing out players like he did in his first season to re-set the standard. Frankly I think he'd be seriously disappointed in Dier and Winks in particular for how they've let their standards slip this last year in particular.

Imagine a manager who can coach and actually improve young players though. Sanchez looked excellent for a year under Poch (and next to Vertoghen) and Foyth has been the best RB in Spain this year.

Not watched any spanish football this year but all the teams of the season have trippier in.

Agreed, particularly on the burn-out point.

I think Poch was frustrated he was being asked to work miracles constantly and wasn't allowed to refresh the squad - outgoings as important as incomings - and he could see the spirit slipping and the standards dropping. Every 'weird' statement was intended to pressure the club to do what he needed. I don't think he actually wanted to leave, I think he was with us for the long haul to build something great, and I think it's a failure of Levy's management of Poch that he allowed him to feel so frustrated to create that impression of burn out.

If he comes back, it's because that lesson has been learned I think. That we can never compromise on spirit and togetherness if we aren't going to have the absolute most money in the league. And to do that we need to be proactive around sales.

Not sure about Sanchez and his future here but i really think that Foyth looks a very good player in the making.

You're entitled to your opinion but what you or think is based on assumptions. If I think he's responsible for the three windows without a signing, that makes him a very poor manager but there's no proof of that either. It's just an assumption, that would be made, in this hypothetical case, because I don't like the guy. If I remember correctly, there are quite a few people on here who don't like Rodgers as a person but I don't think they've ever met him. They don't like his public persona, and that's fine, but assuming that someone makes the correct or wrong decisions because of what you think of them doesn't make much sense. Mourinho is another example: everybody thinks he's a dingdonghead but it seems that Kane has a lot of time for him. It's not as black and white as some people would like to believe.

You're mentioning his first year and how he bombed out players - which is absolutely correct. However, there were also a few stories at the time making the rounds saying that the younger first-players confronted under-performing regulars first. We'll never know what would have happened if everyone had stayed quiet (or even if they did confront them in the first place).

Obviously, we're all here to share our opinions and mine certainly isn't any more valuable than yours. I guess we'll see what happens if he's rehired. But, also, a lot of people (not you, though) tend to present their opinions as facts, which always seem a bit funny to me. We hardly know half of what happens behind the scene. For now, I stand by my point: he doesn't look ruthless at all to me but rather empathic and emotional and, based on that, I'm not sure he'd be able to do what needs to be done but I'm happy for him to prove me wrong.

If that is what he does then it is an insurmountable flaw.
