Which player would you like to see take over from Luka Modric?

AVB has seen Sturridge up close. If you cannot have faith that our new coach is competent enough to accurately assess talent and potential with that level of first-hand experience, then you can't really have faith in his ability to do anything around the place other than crouching and making the tea.

So if AVB signs him I would start from the assumption that the kid has it.

Interesting comment from a journo pal over lunch "more chance of vdv leaving than Modric at the moment"

Update(It's a good one): West Ham are interested in signing Van Der Vaart.
I never said that Van Der Vaart would be interested in moving to West Ham! I just said that we are interested which we are!

On @BTLifesaPitch vodcast. Fulham keen on Huddlestone - but will #thfc boss AVB let him go? Surely big role to play?

Would like to see Huddlestone given a go in the role Romeu had at Chelsea. Wouldn't like to see him go anywhere.

All this Modric back and forth is doing my head in.

Tbh I hope we stick with freidel this season. Was great last year, we don't need to try and upgrade that position for this season, but if the right player came along for the future then we need it.

I never want to buy young keepers. You can buy a guy for the future at 30 and have them play for 8-10 years.

Rossi - I think it is about time we started buyin players who WILL take us up a notch and by that I'm think two or three top quality first team players. Do we have the finances? I'm kinda thinkin we do if the Arab investment is true not to mention how much we have brought in over the last few weeks and couple of windows.

So its just high quality players I think we need to signal we mean business.

Lloris
Vertonghen
Moutinho
Oscar
Ade

Do any of those fit into the "players that'll take us up a notch" category? If not then I can only feel that you're being unrealistic as to who we can attract to the club.

Problem with freidel is his age - you never know with a player of his age which year will be one year too many.

Therefore you ahve to have this replacement or a decent back-up in teh sqaud ready to step in if Freidel deteriorates during the season. SO whether Freidel is first choice or not, we need another decent keeper

And Grimsby are interested in signing Messi.

btw, has anyone else seen the Mancini -> Russia stories? €7.2m a year, €20m compo to City, happening next week according to sports.ru

He'll be 23 in September. Only a bit over two years younger than Lennon. Same age as Bale. So he's not THAT young, actually about time for him to start maturing a bit and start actually playing well, not just show promise or he will be another Adam Johnson imo. He has talent, but will he be able to actually step it up to the next level? Like I said, AVB will know him very well and is in a great position to make a decision should he become available.

I tend to try and consider experience when making a statement like 'he is a young player' - he may be only 2 years younger than Lennon, but he has 100s fewer games under his belt. iirc he has about a season and a half of regular football, so is 'young' in those terms too.

You are right though, he does of course need to show more from now though

Rossi - we havent signed any of those players. I am basing my 'excitement' levels on what has happened so far. If we did sign them then fudge yeah i would be excited (not seen Oscar so cant say too much).

By the way I would sincerely hope we sign two strikers and not just Ade (although I would like him in for sure)

LAMPARD OFFERED £230,000-A-WEEK BY CHINESE CLUB

Frank Lampard may be coming towards the end of his career but his status as one of the star names in English football has been confirmed by an enormous salary offer from a Chinese club this summer.

The Sweeper can reveal that an unnamed club in the Chinese Super League has approached the Chelsea midfielder with a stunning salary offer worth £230,000-a-week after tax.

The 34-year-old is understood to be keen to stay at Chelsea due to personal reasons and his belief that he can still compete at the highest level.

While the identity of the Chinese club remains undisclosed, there are only three teams - Guangzhou Evergrande, Shanghai Shenhua and Dalian Aerbin - who can afford to pay Lampard a £12 million net annual salary.

Dailian appears the most likely club to chase the Chelsea vice-captain as they are targeting big-name signings including Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita, who they are ready to pay between £150,000 and £180,000-a-week.

Guangzhou Evergrande have a transfer policy not to sign foreign players over the age of 30, while Shanghai Shenhua have already spent much of their wage budget on Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba.

Drobga left Chelsea for Shanghai last month for a two-and-a-half-year deal worth £200,000-a-week but he is unlikely to be followed to the Far East by Lampard, his former Blues team-mate.

Lampard currently earns a weekly salary of around £140,000 at Stamford Bridge and has been told he has a future at the club under Roberto Di Matteo, having seemingly been heading for a summer exit under former manager Andre Villas-Boas.
