American politics

I don't think you can account for 75M people with just populism.

Whatever we all think of Trump, we have to accept that a very large chunk of the electorate out there either likes him or, at least, prefers him to Biden.
I don’t know much about American politics but it strikes me as being very partisan. Where you have just 2 major parties to follow then you are going to polarise the vote share. You are going to have staunch republicans (and staunch democrats), you’re going to have the “better the devil you know mob” the fact that Biden looks old and frail, then add to that a populist message, with simplistic solutions to complex problems you can see why the votes will stack up. But even with these things in his favour, it still looks like like over half the population opted against him.

Thats is really, thats why their are no long term inroads made in politics because people just place labels on things attempting to get to the route cause of things.

Being republican is like a religion out there and Trump has made it significantly worse. Then you add in how incredibly dumb most people are.

True. Not only populism. Also racism, sexism, fascism, originalism... Any isms I'm forgetting?

And no, I'm not saying those are the only reasons Trump is doing well. They are factors though.
Of course.

The reason I point this out is that the democrats have made this mistake twice in a row (although it looks like this time they got away with it). As much as we dislike Trump, it's clear that there are a lot of people who like what he offers. When The Democrats talk about lurching to the left to win some student votes, they should keep in mind that there are a lot of votes to be won from further to the right of their position.

Both times they went with a more centrist candidate rather than a Sanders or Warren.

We'll never know what would have happened had they gone for Sanders in 2016 or this year. Going by the results the gains from the right haven't exactly been massive.

Could say they should have gone with someone even further to the right than Clinton or Biden. Not sure who the realistic candidate would have been though. I think they would have lost more of the left wing than they would have gained in the centre, but again we'll never know.

I don't see how you support your claim that it was a mistake twice.

Registered democrats and independents is a huge demographic and any candidate need to motivate enough of them to vote. Republicans will vote republican no matter what.

I think we're seeing turnout numbers that indicate that Trump both needed, and did, motivate voters on his side.

We're also seeing the same from Biden. My point is that we'll never know if Sanders, Warren, or whoever Scara has in mind would do the same, better or worse at that.

Not being an old, white guy, they would have given Trump a lot more to work with in his bullying tactics. Which is basically all he has.
