Just seen the incident for the first time. Am I the only one who thinks it probably deserves to be a pen...?!

Dier’s arm is flailing as he’s coming down, it’s not like he was using it to jump.

As his head was in the air, and inclined to the flight of the ball, does that not usually mean he is involved in play - therefore offside ?

Not in the newer rules I don’t think as he doesn’t materially affect the play in that phase.

In the old rules (from what, at least four seasons ago??) he would have been off.

The scandal is the award of the free kick in the first place which is clearly an on-field mistake, and the new interpretation of the handball law.

I think the offside / onside call is clear and correct in this instance.

I think it has in recent weeks, and other offences noticed during VAR reviews can be considered.

As soon as I saw the replay I thought it would be a penalty.... his arm is out and hand is up. It was rubbish defending to be fair.

The rule is stupid and needs to be changed, but the ref applied it to the letter. The free kick decision that led to this incident was the scandalous one from the ref.

No i agree - no idea why he's throwing his arm out like that.

His arm is in a natural position. He’s on the way down; it’s just physics that when the body weight descends the arms will go up. It’s completely normal.

Even the opposition manager thinks it’s a joke. So yes just you. And maybe Souness.

Someone else posted earlier a very good point. It always looks much worse in slow motion. Dier was jumping for the ball the way defenders always have jumped for the ball. It’s not a pen if you apply the smallest bit of common sense to it.

Yes - if it had been Carroll in an offside position: that would have canceled any subsequent offence as he’d have been off first.

But the player who was in the ostensible offside position here wasn’t affecting play on that phase under the current laws so it’s right that he was ignored as a factor.

Fair enough. I’ve only seen it on my phone. At the very least he looked a bit out of control, but debatable whether that deserves to be punished or not (both in the spirit of the game, and in terms of the laws as they are).

Dier wasn't in control of his arms and was flailing about, that's the long and short of it.

TBF as much as I agree we all know the game and it isn't a penalty even if the made up rules say it is.

The games descending into my favourite buttplug

We all know that the new handball is my favourite buttplug but given the rule is now there, it was always going to be given as a pen. I am more upset about the free kick before the goal where Joelinton is awarded a free kick for running into Hojberg, which was just ridiculous

Anyway - lots of good performances today. I thought Højbjerg had a blinder - was all over the pitch! Lo Celso seemed to be the catalyst to get our forward play going, always being available in those small pockets for a pass - he's a little gem, that man. Toss up between Højbjerg and Lo Celso as MOM for me @milo. Winks had his first good game for ages, I thought. Doherty impresses me down the right, his one two's are excellent, and he's so speedy and agile for a big bloke. Looks to be a very very sound piece of business. Kane was immense in the first half - faded a bit in the second half, but did a great job overall. Also - shoutout to Bergwijn, he always gives 100%, did a lot of good stuff in his short cameo, I thought, unlucky that some of the things he tried didn't come off. Lucas also worked tirelessly and had lots of nice touch and goes and turns. However - Bale up front istead of Lucas, Reguilon on the LB instead of Davies, and another hard as rock CB in instead of Sanchez or Dier, and we're going to look much stronger going forward.

Lots of positives today. It's always brick when you lose points like this, but it's still early days, it's psychologically better to lose those points now rather than later in the season.

Ignoring the ridiculous new handball rule I thought we played reasonably well today. We were wasteful with our finishing and some of our play around their penalty area was sloppy, but the tempo of our passing was pretty good, especially from Hojbjerg and Ndombele when he came on.

Its hard to judge too much though as Saudi Sportswashing Machine really were dire, I think any reasonable team wins comfortably against them today.
