The Squad

This is assuming we make the CL

Bassong - keep,he showed real promise, but needs games
Jenas - Sell,we will have Huddlestone for the next season who is much better and Livermore is also very good
Pienaar - Sell,I d rather keep Kranjcar who is more direct which is what we need more IMO
Corluka - Keep, but I m afraid he is already gone
Caulker - Keep
Dos Santos - Sell,Harry was never gonna give him a chance anyway
Bentley - If we buy someone who can play RM,then sell
Krancjar - Keep,he offers a direct goal threat from midfield, only matched by VdV
Khumalo - Sell,he was never gonna make it
Townsend - Keep, let him play CC/FA cup matches

Bleep!!! I totally forgot about Hudd!!! I still say keep Jenas for his abaility to get up and down the park, though I understand why many would say sell

Keep:

Corluka, Caulker, Dos Santos, Naughton.

Sell:

Bassong, Jenas, Khumalo, Pienaar, Bentley, Gomes.

Also we have 4 players out of contract now who are presumably not being renewed (Cudicini, Nelson, Saha and King).
Have it on very good authority that nelsen bought out remain of his contract at blackburn surely wouldn't of done that just for 6 months at spurs?

Think the rumour was Nelsen was heading to MLS before we came in, guess 6 months at Spurs isn't a bad shop window

Think Nelsen will stay. From HR:
"He has got a six-month contract. At the end of the season you have got to keep him here next year because he's worth his weight in gold just to have around for other people to look at the way he works, the way he trains, the way he behaves, his attitude.

..instead of "look at the why I train the players, the we work and the way we behave and attitude..."
Typical Redknapp.

I'm all for signing players for their attitude but so many if these older signings like this just gives the whiff of somebody who is happy to continually 'sub-contract' that role which he himself is there to do....

Here's a 25-man squad that came out of a poll I made on another forum

1. New 1st Choice Keeper
2. Brad Friedel
3. New Backup Keeper

4. Kyle Walker
5. Kyle Naughton
6. Benoit Assou-Ekotto
7. Danny Rose

8. New 1st Choice Central Defender
9. Younes Kaboul
10. Michael Dawson
11. William Gallas
12. Ledley King
+ Steven Caulker

13. Gareth Bale
+ Andros Townsend
14. Aaron Lennon
15. New Backup Wide Midfielder

16. Luka Modric
17. Tom Huddlestone
18. New Backup Central Midfielder
19. Sandro Ranieri
20. Scott Parker
21. Jake Livermore

22. New 1st Choice Forward
23. New 1st Choice Forward
24. Rafael Van der Vaart
25. Yago Falque

Sold/Relased: Gomes, Alnwick, Nelsen, Bentley, Jenas, Dos Santos, Saha

Cudicini, Corluka, Kranjcar, Pienaar, Adebayor and Defoe didn't make the cut for the 25 man squad.

Cudicini, Corluka, Kranjcar, Pienaar, Adebayor and Defoe didn't make the cut for the 25 man squad.

1st bolded; unnecessary, I'd argue, given that we could either extend Cudicini's contract or promote Button. Friedel as back-up keeper, I'm not too sure about either, but I can see where you're coming from so I won't cavil too much. But consider that he's been consistent far longer than anyone's expected him to be, and there's no reason that can't continue. Also, doesn't he deserve a shot at CL football, if we (hopefully) make it?

2nd bolded; again, rather unnecessary. Luka and Hudd are fine as our creative mids, and with Sandro, Scotty and Jake, I think the other position's taken as well. Hell, a midfield of Luka, Hudd and Sandro would be a sight to see. Plus, Rafa isn't really a forward with all the tracking back he does. He could just fill in as a CM, it's where he spends the most time in games. So that's another CM, giving us a total of six. Good enough.

3rd bolded; wut? the lad's barely featured since moving to Southampton. Nigel Adkins clearly doesn't rate him. So why on earth would he be good enough for the fourth forward position? Pienaar would do a better job there.

Otherwise, pretty much agree with your list of sales and releases, with the slight addendum that since Naughton can cover both full-back positions and Gallas and hopefully Vertonghen can both play at left-back, perhaps letting Danny go wouldn't be the worst idea. He'd be worth quite a bit, after all, what with him having pace, PL experience and an occasional screamer in him. Maybe 5-6 mill?

he is extolling the virtues of an individual player - what possible reason would he have for expressing things in the way you suggest?

In fact, going by your list, I'll make one of my own;

(ideal)25 man squad for next season;

1) Brad Friedel
2)Carlo Cudicini
3)David Button

4)Kyle Walker
5)Kyle Naugton
6)Benoit-Assou Ekotto

7) Jan Vertonghen (new CB/cover LB)
8)Ledley King
9)William Gallas
10)Steven Caulker
11)Michael Dawson
12)Younes Kaboul

13)Sandro Ranieri
14)Scott Parker
14)Jake Livermore
15)Tom Huddlestone
16)Luka Modric
17)Rafael Van Der Vaart

18)Gareth Bale
19)Aaron Lennon
20)Andros Townsend
21)Junior Hoilett (new right/left winger)

22)Loic Remy (new striker/winger)
23)Emmanuel Adebayor (new(ish) striker)
24) Moussa Dembele (new striker/ CM)

With one free space.

Of course, I'd happily put Defoe in as the third striker, but I don't think he'd want to be one. The key here is buying players who can play effectively in multiple positions, to maximise the effectiveness of squad rotation while still maintaining a fairly manageable squad with less simmering discontent at lack of playing time.

Sell

Gio
Jenas
Bentley
Bassong
Defoe
Pienaar
Gomes
Khumalo

Keep:
Townsend
Caulker
Naughton
Charlie
Krancjar

Release:
Cudicini
Nelson
Saha

Give away to anyone who will take him:
Falque

Keep:

Corluka, Caulker, Dos Santos, Naughton.

Sell:

Bassong, Jenas, Khumalo, Pienaar, Bentley, Gomes.

I'd agree with that, although I'd sell Gio, for the sake of his own career, more than anything

I'd sell Kranjcar too

I like the look of that squad

Why do people keep saying to sell GDS 'for the sake of his own career'?!?!?

Why not just sell him because he's brick, hasnt produced anything in the 3(?) years which he's been at Spurs, has a reputution for lack of effort/application and is a financial burden on the club?

There are no footballing reasons to keep him

Need a new keeper though

We can only buy so many players, though. I imagine Remy, Ade, Dembele and Vertonghen would set us back at least 50 million quid, plus the compensation fee for Hoilett which I haven't factored in. Now, selling Charlie, Pienaar, Krank, GDS, Bentley, Jenas, Bassong, Khumalo and Gomes would probably only get us around 40 million quid in total. So we're already asking Levy to dip into the club's funds for another ten million quid or so, not taking into account the wage demands of the new players or the relieved wages of the old players leaving. Which is already stretching what we'll be able to do while the new stadium's draining our funding. I'd imagine 8-ten million pounds would be the most we'd be prepared to spend for the next few transfer windows at least. So adding a good goalkeeper (like Lloris) who could take us to the next level, and spending another 15-20 million to do it, is almost impossible, imo.
