Young needs to be dropped, desperately. I have absolutely no idea what he is doing there.

Sterling, hes a nearly player so far. Nearly getting it right, but not quite, how long can you keep playing him in hope he will click into gear?

When you look at it we haven't really done anything in this tournament yet.

A late 'makes life easier' goal against Tunisia, a cruise to victory against a terrible Panama team, a nothing game against Belgium.

Last night I thought we played well up to a point. Controlled, composed, tactical but lacking the final ball or bit of guile that would open them up. But let's face it there was not much chance of drawing the Columbians out and combined with their (dirty) tactics that makes life tough. Think they gave us a bit too much respect.

We're a bit like an AVB side, if you attack us you may just realise you can get us in a whole heap of trouble. Columbia did none of that.

I think we did deal with the hammer blow of the last minute equaliser well. By the second half of extra time we were back on the front foot. Fair play for the hard work that's gone into the penalties, its paid off. The takers have a routine and it showed. (Tripps especially). Both of those events will layer on some golden experience going forward.

Ironically we face another team that will bank it up in defence and although we don't look threatened we are finding it hard to break it down (sound familiar?).

You'd probably see the best of us against a team that opens up, BUT you'd also see the worst. Mbappe, Giroud, Griezman......Jesus, Neymar, Coutinho.....Cavani Suarez....different level problems that I just don't see us dealing with.

I think the experience the spurs lads had two years ago against Chelsea when they roughed us up but we responded showed last night.

All the yids were calm and not the ones likely to get sent off.

I really do think our players are key to the attitude being shown by the team atm - not wuite up to Spurs levels of street smarts but much improved on previous generations of England sides - am i imagining things or has Southgate spoken previously of talking with Poch a bit?

So well done to England for winning their first penalty shootout in the World Cup but not sure if they have overcome their penalty curse. England normally lose the penalties to traditional big teams in the World Cup (Germany 1990, Argentina 1998 and Portugal 2006) and Colombia are not even a big South American team. This match should not have even gone to the penalties as Colombia were playing poorly without their injured best player James Rodriguez. England should have won in normal time but got over confident after Kane scored the penalty and were duly punished by Colombia who scored the equalizer in injury time. Due credits to Kane, Trippier and Dier for scoring the penalties. Well done to Kane for scoring his 6th goal of this World Cup. Must say Kane has been very fortunate in this World Cup as 3 of his goals are penalties while another is a lucky deflection. But don't think Kane will be worried about that as long as he becomes the top scorer in the World Cup. While South American teams play-acting is nothing new, it was embarassing to see a few England players play-acting as well. Maguire should have been yellow carded for his embarassing dive to win a penalty while Henderson fell down clutching his face after being head butted into his chest !

Football world must have been more relieved to see England winning a penalty shootout for once ! The football world would have been very very bored to see England losing another penalty shootout in the World Cup and having to read about it for the next 20 years or so ! I think the main reason England won the penalties is because 3 of the penalty takers were from Spurs while Colombia had a Arsenal goalkeeper ! It seems like Spurs are single handedly carrying England now ! Good to see all the Spurs players scoring the penalties for England despite Spurs having a poor penalty shootout record !

Colombia will always be the small team from South America and will never reach the levels of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay or Chile. For all their quality players, Colombia just don't have the mentality to succeed at any major tournaments. They are too inconsistent and can only play well in patches. Really thought Colombia can go very far in this World Cup but they were inconsistent in all their matches in this World Cup.

Sweden did well to beat Switzerland to progress to the Quarter Final. But Sweden will really regret not bringing their best player Ibrahimovic to the World Cup. They were fortunate to win as Switzerland dominated the match and had many chances to score. Sweden's attack looked toothless despite Switzerland missing 2 defenders through suspension. Sweden will face uphill battle against England in the Quarter Finals. Sweden are supposed to be England's bogey team as they have won 5, drew 8 and lost just 2 out of 15 matches against England in the last 50 years. But they will be at disadvantage against England due to not having a reliable goal scorer like Ibrahimovic.

Maguire impressed me.

He has been immense. Not just blocking, tackling and being big and strong, but he also brings the ball forward and finds really good passes. Never stops either. He kept running and trying right through extra time too. Quality player.

Agree with both of these posts, he was brilliant last night ( our best player by a mile) and for me he has been star. We won which at the end of the day is what counts, the only change i would make is Rashford for Sterling.

Young has to go - top priority.

A LWB with no bloody left foot is ridiculous and its costing us.

I was shocked how poor they were. Easy to see why that lad who was at Chelsea did not cut it, all they did was stand him up and he had nothing in his locker.
They were an embarrassment, terrible side!

Had about 3 different people come up to me today and say we were lucky! A Belgium, French and German, I don’t think they were on the wind up either. Makes you wonder what some people watch?

Do not get me wrong i am no fan of Young but his crossing and free-kicks are better then Rose any day. Southgate uses him in a plan and its working so far.

His crossing isnt great at all, and Trippier has the free kicks covered.

Id have Rose or Delph ahead of him simply because they actually offer width on that side and have a left foot they are prepared to use.

Invariably Young gets the ball, stops, checks inside, then thinks about what to do with it, by when the other team is in position and he is already under pressure.

I saw one single cross with his left last night, went right over the box where there was nobody. I dont recall another from the other games played.

Put Delph/Rose in and we actually have a functional left side, and offers some much needed balance.

Well as i say i am no fan of Young but its not worth getting into a debate about it, let just say we agree to disagree. :)
