for me, a sizable percentage of england's success in the summer was the lack of expectation/no "golden generation" talk, now this has happened and the pressure will be ramped up, we'll be back to getting knocked out in the group stages again/semis of the nations league,

There was some talk during the last set of internationals of Dele or Barkley, with many international fans opting for Barkley due to Dele's recent form. The game on the weekend not only bought back in form Dele but also final third Dele, the player who makes late runs into the box, who goes past his striker and exploits space so well.

So has Poch given Southgate another potential solution by using Dele as part of a front 3?

Rashford has done exceedingly well for the national team recently, but he's not getting regular starts at UTD. Sterling's still got question marks hanging over him with regards to his performances vs those at City whilst Sancho is still new to the scene. I think Dele's natural game will see him do better here than in midfield and it would allow England to play Barkley and another creative midfielder (which imo Dele isn't).

Barkley was impressive, regretfully we should have bought him!
Dele can do a job ‘if asked’ but prefer further forward also.

Barley and dele show how we have progressed as a club.
10 years ago we had players like barley, full of potential but unlikely to achieve it or grow beyond that.
5 years ago a player like dele would have been snapped up by man u or arsenal and have flourished.
That these two players are where they are now shows a shift in club power.

Hang about, it was just under five years ago that we snapped Dele up because none of the big boys were prepared to take a chance on him.

So he flourished with us instead.:D

England will play the Netherlands in the Nations League semi-finals in Guimaraes, Portugal on 6 June 2019.

The hosts face Switzerland on 5 June at Porto's Estadio do Dragao in the other semi-final, with the final on 9 June.

Could set a record for most players from one club in an international, assuming Dembele and Tripps recover in time

Ahead of 2022, Qatar just introduced 400% tax on alcohol. 24 cans of Heineken now costs $105 / £82.
Poses challenges for drinkers at World Cup, especially as bags are scanned on entry to country.
Also an issue for official sponsor Budweiser and for what happens in Doha fan zones.

    Ottawa, actually.
I don't think they'll keep that around for the World Cup - doesn't FIFA demand that their events are tax-exempt as a condition of granting them to the host country?

Part of the reason I didn't want Canada to bid for WC2026, to be honest - FIFA can f*ck right off with their unbridled greed and demands to be allowed to ride roughshod over national laws. However, in this case, that sort of tax exemption approach might end up ensuring that Qatar lets beer remain untaxed for the duration of the event.

    Declan Rice declares for England

The Football Association of Ireland also confirmed the news Declan Rice has opted for England in a short statement.

Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy said: "Declan rang me today and said he has decided to give it a go with England. Good luck to him."

Having seen a bit more of him recently, yes I think he is.

Very understated player, sits at the base of midfield and snuffs out danger very effectively, plays it off.

    Intelligent footballer.

Limited player performing a very limited role, reasonably well.

Uhhhhm you are aware of the role Sissoko plays right? :ross:

Sorry I just find it funny you praising Rice for performing one of the roles Sissoko does well, whilst also filling in as RB for an errant Tripper and making decisive bursts forward.

Rice is so fudging overrated it's unbelievable. Dier is three times the player, at least.

Rice. You know already I love Dier anyway, and chances are would have seen a fair bit of him before recently ;)

I love Dier, not suggesting anything about Rice in context or by comparison to him - actually not sure what you are even talking about there.

    Or even Sissoko.

Am I not to hold an opinion on any other player in any other team because we already have players in the same positions? Thats a bit odd, lets be honest.
