Covid outbreak at Spurs

This may not be the last round of outbreaks at clubs causing postponements.

Player health and stopping the spread should be a focus, but I would think the PL and clubs would want whatever games that can be safely played to go through.

Two games in three days isn't "fair" of the opposition doesn't have that, but most likely that will end up being the effect of postponed fixtures too.

I guess it's mostly up to what a majority of the clubs want at this point? For us it looks like playing games would be to our advantage?

The majority of Premier League clubs want to continue playing throughout the festive period despite a spate of recent postponements due to COVID-19 outbreaks.

Premier League club executives staged a virtual meeting via Zoom on Monday after the weekend’s fixture list had been decimated by several outbreaks of COVID-19.

The Athletic revealed on Sunday that clubs were set to debate whether or not to postpone an entire round of festive fixtures — but it is understood a large majority of clubs wish to play on.

Some clubs, including Liverpool, supported moving one round of fixtures and it is understood that they were not the only side to speak up in favour of the idea. But others argued that such a plan was too complex and riddled with risk.

Any postponement would come at an economic cost for the Premier League, for example, while the likelihood of gameweek 20 — set to be broadcast by Amazon Prime — being the round of fixtures to be postponed presented additional complications.

A third option — halting the season completely — was also discussed, although it is understood that no club argued in favour of such a move.

Instead, it is most likely that Premier League clubs will play on and fulfil their fixtures as planned, despite the Omicron variant leading to rising COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom.

None of the three options were formally voted on by the Premier League’s 20 clubs. The Premier League listened to their concerns but, ultimately, the decision falls on them.

While the Premier League recognises a number of clubs are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks, it has always been the league’s intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible. They say the health and wellbeing of all concerned remains its priority.

Six of the 10 Premier League matches were called off this weekend because a series of clubs registered a spike in COVID-19 cases, leaving them unable to complete fixtures.

is the correct thing to do

do you call all games off and cause a massive back log or play the games you can?

Completely. They need to be setting a rule about when a game can and cannot be cancelled, or at least a guideline based on whether the PL will be likely to grant a postponement

I think the other problem that arises is, it's ok to play 1 game with limited numbers available, BUT with a heavy festive schedule, it can limit rotation if you have many players on the covid/injured list, potentially compounding the problem. Plus you can have 13 fit but surely it depends on what positions those that are fit play?

I wonder if Liverpool will try and get Salah and Mane to test positive just before the ACON so they don’t have to go.
