*** Tottenham Hotspur vs Panathinaikos OMT ***

AVB said:
“I’m also not in a position to criticise other managers’ approach to the competition.

“But ask my goalkeeping coach Tony Parkes about when he won the UEFA Cup with our club in 1984.

“When English clubs were later banned from Europe it was every single club’s ambition to play in European competitions.

“I respect the competition. I certainly think it is viewed as a punishment in England and I cannot understand why. It is a traditional trophy.

“We have lost the Cup Winners’ Cup, which I did not think was a good decision. But it was taken to enrich the Europa League.

“It’s full of tradition, particularly in England, so that’s what surprises me about this attitude even more.

“So many great players have won this competition. You can go back to Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Tony Parkes and the list goes on and on.

“You could build the most sensational team of all time from the English players who have won it.

“We at Tottenham view it as an education for the future.

“I certainly believe other countries do not approach it as England do.”

Who: Panathinaikos v Tottenham Hotspur
Where: Olympic Stadium, Athens
When: 6pm, ITV4

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas cannot understand why the Europa League is so undervalued in England.

Villas-Boas’s career took off two years ago when he won the competition with Porto to cap a sensational season during which he won four trophies and replaced Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea. Although that move turned sour, the 34 year-old is still regarded as one of the most promising coaches in Europe.

Former manager Harry Redknapp described participating in the tournament as a “punishment” and, although he was at pains to insist he was not criticising his predecessor, Villas-Boas insists the tournament is greatly undervalued in England.

“The profile of the competition is raised in other countries, but not England. I don’t understand it,” Villas-Boas said.

“I respect the competition. I certainly think it is viewed as a punishment in England and I cannot understand why. It is a traditional trophy. You could build the most sensational team of all time out of Europa League winners.”

Greek tragedy?

"Mr. Katsouranis is history at Panathinaikos." So said club chairman Yiannis Alafouzos, who kicked the Panathinaikos captain off the team in a surprise move yesterday after winning only one of its five league matches this season.

Opposition form

Panathinaikos currently lie in 12th place in Greece's 16-team league, with four points from five matches. (They had two points deducted due to fan violence last season.) The Greek outfit lost their opening Group J match to Slovenian club Maribor 3-0 last month.

Team news

Tottenham will be without striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who has still not recovered from a hamstring injury. Brad Friedel has not travelled to Athens, so Hugo Lloris is likely start in goal. Jake Livermore (groin), Younes Kaboul (knee), Kyle Naughton (foot), Scott Parker (Achilles) and Benoît Assou-Ekotto (knee) are all out.

Panathinaikos (probable, 4-3-3):
Karnezis
Vyntra, Boumsong, Velázquez, Spyropolous
Zeca, Vitolo, Marinos
Sissoko, Christodoulopoulos, Owusu-Abeyie.

Tottenham Hotspur (probable, 4-2-3-1):
Lloris
Walker, Gallas, Caulker, Vertonghen
Sandro, Dembélé
Lennon, Dempsey, Bale
Defoe

Either play full strength or play the kids, I don't want either of them near a cup competition.

Tottenham squad: Lloris, Cudicini, Smith, Vertonghen, Gallas, Dawson, Caulker, Walker, Dempsey, Huddlestone, Lennon, Bale, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Falque, Townsend, Sandro, Mason, Defoe

We could do with Danny Rose back the squad seem to be light on full backs for a change.

So Smith, Falque, Townsend and Mason the only youngsters that might get a run out. Slightly surprising, will be interesting to see how we line up.

If we'd taken full points against Lazio we might have taken a little off the gas, but he wants to win this competition so I'm not too surprised. It'll definitely be interesting to see if any start. I think Townsend might be the only one to get the nod for kick-off. Maybe Smith if he wants to be careful with Walker. I don't think you can have both Falque and Townsend starting against a team like Panathinaikos, regardless of their recent form.

Am I right in thinking that Owusu-Abeyie used to play for the arseholes as well?

He also had a trial with us in 2009 when he was looking for a british club again after his spell with Spartak Moscow.
Didn't he play a game or two for XIs?

A win - nothing else is acceptable with the way pan are at this moment, and how we have been improving plsu last saturday's result.

We should easily be too much for them.

He was on trial with us in January 2009.

We were running a Reserves team that season, but he didn't play any matches for them during his spell with us.

I'll hold my hands up, when we was in the UEFA Cup with Redknapp I didn't care at all about the competition and it wasn't juist because Redknapp wasn't bothered about it - I just wanted us to focus on the league. But hearing AVB talk about it and how seriously he is taking it makes me want us to really go far in this tournament.....

Where did that come from? Am guessing it was from a paper or non-official website, in which case its b0llocks. All they do is name the players who were in the 18 for the last couple games rather than actually having an insight into who will be played

Think we should be playing 4 or 5 first teamers in games like this and then padding the team out with people like Dawson, Thudd, Naughton etc plus the odd kid like TOwnsend. The first choice players who arent in teh 4 or 5 starting should stay at home. That way the squad gets used and players get a break every other week
