Tottenham Hotspur 2025 Europa League Winners !!!!!!!

And the Euros with Italy v Spain

No, he went out on penalties vs Germany. He was very tactically astute in getting that Italy side (quite an average one if i remember correctly) to overcome Spain who were the holders of the Euros at the time.

Conte is backsh!t crazy though and can do the initial building of a team but doesn't have the mentality to maintain what he's built and then go up against competitors at a similar level (i.e. European competition).
He is great for a quick fix though

It's probably not the right thread to ask this, but i'll give it a go anyway:

That Chiellini quote of "It is the history of Tottenham"; why on earth did he say that at the time? It's not like we were a competitor or would have been anywhere near his radar, why did he go to such effort to say that in the post-match interview?

Anyone hear anything about why at the time or afterwards?

He's Italian, so he didn't know the shorthand version is simply the word "sexy".
So he explained sexy in a long-winded way. He had just played a very hard game against us, so it was his way of saying that Spurs always find a way to fail.

It is the cruellest cut - the jibe that hits home every time Tottenham slip up when the going looks good.

"sexy" - the ability to snatch defeat from victory, to turn advantage into disappointment. You get the idea.

As Pochettino shook hands with his Juventus counterpart Massimiliano Allegri, history was revisited.

Tottenham finished third in a two-horse Premier League race behind Leicester City and Arsenal in 2015-16, were runners-up to Chelsea last season and also lost an FA Cup semi-final to Antonio Conte's side last year.

Juventus defender Chiellini hinted at it after Wednesday's game when he said: "It is the history of Tottenham. They always create many chances and score so much, but they miss something at the end."

We were enough of a competitor to make that tie an extremely close-run thing.

Italian teams are known for that sort of verbal sledging, and I have zero doubt he was saying the same things to the players, etc., during the game. Anything to get an edge.

It's a jibe that hurts because it's true - we've been nearly men for most of our history, and even amidst the bliss of the EL win, I think that will stay until we establish a consistent run of winning the biggest trophies out there - PL, CL, etc.

We're by far from alone in this - we have equivalents around Europe in the form of both Roma and Lazio, Leverkusen, Sevilla, etc. who also are in that tier of good enough to be well known, not good enough to be a consistent winner.

After a rough couple of days I went to the spurs data base and checked on the matches played on the 21/05. Just to cheer me up.
12 games, one loss and that bizarrely was to Celtic in 1966 in a friendly.
One draw with feynord in the first leg of the EUFA Cup final.
Interesting stuff, well to me anyway.

Thanks both. I do know exactly what Spurzy entails (;)) and what Chiellini was referring to. I still don't know why he'd go to the effort to say what he did on live TV though.

It felt small-time or like he had secretly been a big fan of Arsenal or Chelsea as his second team....it still makes no sense for him to do what he did (not what he was actually saying in itself).
For example, would he have said similar if they'd beaten a Serie A rival who always just fell short against them? Or after winning against any of Spurzy our equivalents in Europe?
