Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Tim Sherwood was dead right to slate his under-performing highly paid professionals. This is what Billy Nick did when required. Tim showed passion and that he cared. Levy and his Board are to blame for wasting €100 million on journey men who Tim does not pick in his team. Tim should stay and Levy should go.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

So a fairly small number out of the whole management community?

Most of them lie through their back bleedin teeth, claiming to have not seen incidents involving their players, telling the media one thing and doing another regarding team selections, if you expect me to name every manager guilty of this then you're barking up the wrong tree.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Can you?

I suspect no matter how long your list is it will still be a tiny majority of the managerial community.

Not really no.

However I am referring to liars and/or excuse makers so that would be a pretty long list.

Tim has commented at times we look poor...he hasnt said I messed up tactically but he hasnt hidden it when we havent played well....he has commented that we were lucky to get a penalty..he has said the other team was better at times...he has highlighted how we have started games poorly...he has been honest on Solly's form.

I am trying to think of other managers in the EPL who I have respected as much as sherwood after an interview.....the main one I can think of is Martinez...the rest seem to have blinkers on regarding their team.

Now being honest or good or even clough-like at interviews doesnt mean he will make an amazing coach I agree.... we need to see more but probably wont see what he can do with a pre-season under his belt.

In terms of how he has conducted himself and represented our club...I am proud upto this point.

Others would prefer a manager who came out with excuses, whether you think he has L plates tucked into his pants...the guy has been very honest with us fans...but I dont think he has mentality of a Keegan...who came out as England manager and said im not good enough....but fair do's he said top 4 or goodnight Charlie.

We know where we stand dont we....Levy on the other hand.............

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

We shall see if it works...I hope the reaction is positive and I suspect you're right. They have a great chance of instant redemption. I wonder if they're 'big' enough to take it...

Chances are we will be beaten again before the month is over but that would be the case no matter who was in charge.

We sold Elvis and brought the Nolan.

Before the end of the week. Even if we do alright against Benfica, I'm dreading Sunday.

Yeah. Playing on Thursday. Quite probably only one available CB. Been comprehensively beaten by every good team we have played this season. It doesn't bode well. Only one thing can save us...it's time for you to step up to the plate and start an OMT

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

When managers blast their managers in public, timing and the possibilities for the team to put things 'right' and prove him wrong is everything. What TS did imo showed how green he is in the job and/or that he knows his time is up at the end of the season, for the following reasons:

1) whilst there were some players who capitulated after Verts' howler, the vast majority applied his strategy to stifle them and attempt to hit them on the break to the T; whether the players truly beleived in the method they certainly applied it; those who felt baffled by the method (like many fans beforehand) but at least battled as best as they could for the cause, what will they now think and do when TS then tries another 'unconvential' method in the hard upcoming games we have?

2) we are in the midst of our most difficult run and he needs the players to put in 110% in terms of effort and within a method/strategy that will possibly allow for them to get more than they should on paper at this point. For most players effort on Saturday wasn't wanting, and that level of effort will be needed in the remaining games this month, probably as a minimum. The injuries we have may mean we are entering the 'bare bones' territory. If the remaining players put in the same 110% effort level that the team did at least prior to Verts' mistake but still get panned 4 or 5 due to Arsenal's freshness and superior tactics (both very plausible) where next will TS have to go to explain things? He'll probably be left looking like a mug at the press conference and with the games coming up it could get far worse before it gets better.

If he had said what he said, say before the Liverpool match so that it gave the chance for the players to at least try and lose honourably before the final 6 games that are much more winnable, the effect could have been seen in a much more positive light and a win/draw could have potentially snowballed in a positive way to successive wins, breeding positivity, confidence etc.

Unfortunately, with the injuries we have in defence, the gaps between the EL and quite hard PL games, the still lack of a playing identity/style it's much more likely the effect will be gallant initial effort but a snowballing effect in the opposite direction.

He could have said similar but without the fireworks: "Those lads there really worked their socks off tonight, we really restricted them to very few opportunities before giving them a gift out of nothing. The penalty shortly after was so soft it was unbelievable let alone the sending off. We gave our all before that but this is the second time in a few weeks that we have let a poor decision like that lead to us losing our shape and discipline. We need to cut that out of our game and quickly...we have all to play for in the next few weeks and we can't let the good work we do in big games like this go to waste so easily."

He could have then said what he liked to their faces behind closed doors! Some might have got the big hump; but all would have appreciated his appreciation/protection in the media interview.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Trouble is we've had to time to reflect and analyse it to death, in terms of potential impact and "possible" outcomes.
TS had a mic shoved into his hooter immediately after a game in which had just been spanked.
I appreciate that he needs to react professionally and think things through, but the players have melted all season, so I'm glad he said what he said.
Being tactful hasn't stopped us getting mugged off with heavy defeats all season.

That said, I want LvG to come in, but fundamentally I don't hate TS for what he's said.

Most football managers are liars? That's an incredibly bold statement. Probably a good idea to start hoping there aren't many honest, litigious managers reading this.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

I don't buy the 'Fergie would never slate the players publicly' line of argument, because he never had to put up with a team that has taken 4 ridiculous hammerings this season while pretending to be set on challenging for the top 4. If there's been a bad performance, he can deflect because it happens. If it's a hammering, he won't go mental because it will likely only be one hammering per every year or three.

We have a squad full of players who love to spout to the press about how they think we can be in the top 4. Some of them even like to talk us up at title challengers early in the season. If these same players take 4 hammerings in the space of a few months, they are not putting their money where their mouth is and they deserve to be called out on it IMO.

Other managers of top clubs haven't suffered the routinely shocking results that we have in a short space of time. As far as I'm concerned something needed be said and I'm glad Tim said it. There's an element of players needing to settle in but they can't be allowed to think the expectations of the club are so low that we will just accept these beatings on a regular basis. They should be feeling uncomfortable.

That is the point exactly. Lets see if it works. It is fundamentally down to the players reaction. It could go one of two ways. It is a shame the injury situation masks what Sherwood would ideally like to do.

However, unfortunately I have more than a sneaky suspicion that our players just don't have the necessary strength of character to stand up and prove him wrong. Hope I'm wrong.

.

True but the players react to many things - their professional standards, the fans, the situation that the team is facing, and quite significantly what they see and hear from the coach next. Its not just the players, Tim too has a large part to play.

Daniel Levy attempts to end the unrest at Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs chairman aims to placate manager after criticising boss for "deafening silence" over his future at club

By Matt Law

10:30PM GMT 10 Mar 2014

Daniel Levy is attempting to stop Tottenham Hotspur's season finishing in disarray by breaking his “deafening silence” with Tim Sherwood.

Although Levy is expected to appoint a new manager in the summer, the job Sherwood is doing as head coach has been appreciated by the Spurs chairman and members of the club’s board.

Former midfielder Sherwood hit out at the Tottenham players after the 4-0 thrashing at Chelsea and claimed that Levy’s silence on his future and Louis van Gaal’s desire to take over at White Hart Lane was “deafening”.

The 45-year-old also hinted that he would be interested in a technical director role at Spurs, which is a position occupied by Franco Baldini.

Sherwood’s honest assessment of his and Spurs’ predicament threatened to overshadow the remainder of the season. But Levy wants to diffuse a potentially explosive situation, ahead of games against Benfica and Arsenal, by giving Sherwood a favourable verbal report.

Sherwood’s 18-month contract, worth around £750,000, will still have a year remaining at the end of the season and is not thought to include any break clauses.

Having faced growing criticism from fans for his running of the club, Levy will be well aware that a messy end to the campaign will cause more unrest around White Hart Lane.

While their hopes of a top-four finish may be quickly disappearing, Tottenham can still secure fifth position in the table and remain in the Europa League.

Levy is understood to be particularly impressed with the way Sherwood has handled striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who had been frozen out by Andre Villas-Boas, the former head coach.

Adebayor has scored 11 goals in 16 appearances under Sherwood and is once again justifying Levy’s decision to pay him £75,000 a week, with the player’s former club Emirates Marketing Project funding the remainder of his £170,000-a-week earnings.

Despite Spurs’ latest heavy defeat, Levy has also been encouraged by Sherwood’s record of eight victories from 13 Premier League games and qualification for the last 16 of the Europa League.

Sherwood was never set the specific target of qualifying for the Champions League when he took over from Villas-Boas. His main task was to help stabilise the club and improve performances and results.

Tottenham will attempt to sell some of the players Sherwood labelled “gutless” after the defeat at Stamford Bridge, although the club would prefer he keeps candid criticism of the squad in the dressing room.

There will be changes for the Europa League tie against Benfica on Thursday, with Andros Townsend hoping to win his place back. That could put a doubt over Aaron Lennon, who appeared to ignore Sherwood’s instruction to acknowledge the Spurs fans after the Chelsea thrashing.

Sherwood believes the turnover of players at Tottenham last summer was too high, but the club are still planning to bring in three new men at the end of the season.

Ian Broomfield has returned to Tottenham as a scout and will help to identify a new striker, with Manchester United’s Javier Hernández high on the wanted list, an attacking midfielder and a defender.

Jan Vertonghen is poised to be offered a new contract and a pay rise, but the defender is believed to be growing disillusioned with life at White Hart Lane.

Belgium international Vertonghen has hinted that he will seek to leave Spurs if they miss out on the Champions League and is not thought to be happy about playing at left-back.

Sherwood started Vertonghen at left-back against Chelsea and left him there when Younes Kaboul was sent off, instead moving Sandro into the centre of defence and leaving two full-backs, Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton, on the right.

Asked about Sherwood’s decision to play him at left-back, Vertonghen said: “I was told on Friday. The coach decided to use this tactic, so I listened and did my best.”

On Tottenham’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season, Vertonghen added: “I’ll never say it’s over and out until it’s mathematically impossible, but it’s going to be hard.”

Tottenham will appeal against the red card shown to Kaboul during the match at Stamford Bridge.

Shrewd move by Levy, there's still something to play for beginning on Thursday night before the all important NLD, the last thing you want is in fighting.
