Technology And Refereeing

This is clearly going to be one of the challenges with implementing VAR.
in this instance, the ref was sure, so he didn’t ask for VAR, just denied the penalty and booked Willian.
But Conte says he should have checked anyway.
At what point do refs decide it’s less hassle for them to check all the potentially ‘big’ calls before making a decision, even if they are sure they are correct? Is that what we want?
Maybe that’s where managers/ captains could have an option to ask for (a limited number of) reviews themselves.

There are some great points in/on here.

The point I agree with is why is it implemented when its imperfect, the tech should be tested behind closed doors or in lesser competitions so everything is ironed out.

I think the general idea is that the powers that be arent interested in it going through, so a half assed and flawed attempt puts the whole idea to bed.

The VAR ref did look at it and decided that it was not an obvious mistake :

"Video referees have the choice of telling the match official he has made a clear and obvious error, which in this instance Mike Jones, in a studio in London, did not feel was the case."

It worked as designed, this is not poor implementation but will need a change in how we want it to work.

they have been - the Italian league.
Also...

Where can I find a VAR?
All over the place: Italy’s Serie A, the German Bundesliga, Major League Soccer in America, the Portuguese Primera Liga, the K League in South Korea and Australia’s A-League already use VARs for every league game. Poland and Belgium use it for selected high-profile matches, while in Holland it’s used in cup competitions.

Ah Ok. So everything is being checked by the VAR official anyway, regardless of whether the ref asks for it?
It might be understandable that I didn't know that, but you'd expect the rules would have been clearly explained to the teams involved.
Or maybe not.

they were there was a big thing about the head ref doing this last week - in this case (and in many others in the future) its a manager just moaning even knowing the rules.

The head ref really should come out publicly and say that then, put Conte back in his place and nip it in the bud straight away, otherwise managers will make the same complaints every week.
