Mathys Tel

I guess the hope is with good coaching we can coax some quality out of him and I don't dislike the idea, just not sure what everyone else is seeing currently.

Obviously people have seen quality in him. Byern, france, spurs scouts.

I won't make a judgement on the little i've seen.

I've not been that impressed by him overall, tbh, but he's young and I have noticed some positive signs more recently, which leads me to think that, on balance, he might be worth the punt at the sticker price. I wouldn't have trusted the Aussie to have developed him, but who knows what Frank might do? Same applies to all our youngsters.

Potential is the key word.

We’ve taken more than a few players with potential and apparently high ceilings (e.g. Ndombele) only to later regret the move.

Not to say Tel won’t come good. He hasn’t shown much yet really - but it would be unfair to judge anyone playing in a team that was very poorly organised for long stretches over the past season.

£30 or £40 million sounds a reasonable level of payment for a punt; going above that feels like a risk too far for me…but then it’s not my money. 😃
I don't think you can put Tel and Ndombele in the same bracket. Tel might not have the raw talent of Tanguy, but he's still a very talented player and, more importantly, his attitude has been exceptional, which is something Frank places a lot of importance on. Good signing in my book.

i am confident that by the end of the next season, we will see Tel will improve leaps and bounds under TF's style of play. along with odobert.

I think it's OK to identify some of the weaknesses in Tel's game whilst he is still developing.

It's a completely different thing to spot an alternative player in this market that has the attributes and is available for transfer this summer. So the loan fee was already done and to think we only had to top that up by £30m to land him seems smart to me. I would also say that Frank has a history of working with these raw players and delivering end product from them.

I would already make the statement that Tel will be way more important to our club next season than Sonny.

This seems very much like the stockpiling that I thought we were trying to get out of, arguably done less than Werner in his loan spell.
There's a sense to it if we are going bring in an ever rotating cast of candidates. We let them play, we see whom does the best and sell on the ones who don't reach the level we want. Then rinse and repeat.

It's not easy selling players with the mismatch in wages with Europe, even if they're young. I don't see the point in Tel and Odebert. One of them sure.

I think they both have played a lot in France's youth teams. In the case of these two maybe there is hope they can use their prior understanding to our team's advantage in terms of growing together, building our attacking play etc

They're very different players and I think both add valuable traits to our squad.

exactly, Odebert is likely to remain a "classic" wide player that has the ability to beat his man, carry the ball, expectation is assists or ball before assist.. Tel is more of a wide forward where the expectations would be goals

Tel imo is a gamble on Son's long term replacement

Tel played mostly in an underperforming team in the league. I wouldn’t be judging his output in those games as a fair judge of the player he actually is, and to compare him to Werner is stark raving mad. Tel’s touch, decisiveness, and simply overall quality with which he plays is obvious. For £30m it’s a no brainer.

They would be a good combination if they didnt play on the same side. France U21s manage it by having Tel left and Odobert ACM
