Mathys Tel

France u21s seem to get both of them on the pitch no problem.
Getting them both on the pitch isn't the issue. You can get any combination of players on a pitch. It's whether them being on the pitch at the same time and in the positions selected is effective or not. This of course remains to be seen.

The french coaches seem to think they can play together. As do spurs.

It will take some time for me to forget that he took the ball from the hands of Johnson and didn't let him complete his hattrick with the penalty that he won after all.
I didn't like it and I'm afraid that I'm biased enough to enjoy him playing for us.
That's rather petty. I'd forgotten all about that.
Google says Porro took the ball off Johnson and gave it to captain Romero who gave it to Tel, so presumably Romero, being a team player, wanted Tel to have a good moment and get integrated into the team/scoring.

With the debate after Sunday's penalty incident, what struck me was that you didn’t want to put Tel off his stride even though you clearly wanted to take the penalty?

All of us attacking players, if there’s a chance to score from 12 yards without it being contested, all of us would want to take it. Once the decision had been made it’s not really my nature to argue or have a fight about who takes a penalty. I’ve been in that situation before, where people are really reluctant to let someone else have a penalty and it can put you off. So once the ball was with Mathys I just wanted to get on the edge of the box and support him. He put it away and he’s a quality player as well so it’s not like I’m doubting his quality. As soon as the ball was put in his hands I backed him to score.

speaking of johnson, he is definitely ahead of the learning curve and will still be first choice right or centre attacker under TF.

What's better for us. An attacker already in form going from 2 to a hat trick. Or an attacker struggling a bit gets a goal and perhaps gets going.

Not saying I have the answer, but it's not an obvious "this is the right thing".

Even disregarding that a young attacker wanting to score through a penalty and in the moment not considering his teammate being on for a hat trick is imo a non issue.

Really think Tel will surprise a lot of people this season. I was desperate for us to initially bring him in, and now happy that it’s been made permanent. Think in a decent team he can step up and show what he’s really all about.

Fully agreed. Really think he has the potential to go on to be a top class player. Good all round game with great ball striking ability is such a good profile. Had half a season to settle in now and the boost of the EL win. And I think he'll fit Frank better than he did Ange.

Hopefully Tel and Odobert play for France U21s vs Germany at 8 tonight.
Watch on 4seven on channel 4 app.
Plus the other 2 French kids we are linked with ??

Germany just beat England and Italy so are a goooood test.

Hopefully just needs a bit more match time and Tel’s not destined to be another Timo Werner in front of goal.

Don't think he'll be another Werner. Natural ball striker unike Werner. Just one of those that didn't go in.

Will be interesting to see if with Sonny leaving we target another left sided attacker or trust Tel and Odobert to do the job. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Frank can get out of both of them.

he looks much better playing for France - not just football but leadership qualities too
he's still very young - time is on his side, but we can't count on him only.
the bigger issue is that we can't get productive output from our senior strikers

Thing is 1-on-1 finishing is an art in even the best strikers. And in those situations where you are really 1 on 1 with the keeper with everyone else pretty much out the game and with a long stretch of the pitch to run too, I always think the narrative that the striker has the advantage doesn't really wash particularly in terms of how often those opportunities aren't scored. The striker has time but the keeper also has time to narrow the angle, set himself and make the final shot as difficult as possible.

There is loads of coaching around this for forwards- perhaps they are more commonly missed by overlapping full backs or dm’s or who wouldn’t participate in these drills.

You either bang it early, hit it when the keepe plants his feet, whack it through his legs, flip it over him like Messi or best of all, do a Glenn Hoddle and sit the keeper round with a twitch of an eyebrow and just slide past, or Gazza style take it wide passed the keeper and slot if it from the outside edge of the six yard box.

An unpracticed player would just do what the keeper forces him to do.

He was too far out when he was released 1v1 to bang it early (baring keeper rushing off his line allowing a long range lob). Keeper stayed on his feet despite attempts at a fake shot, making a "flick over him" very risky, given keeper stayed on his feet, didnt buy the fake shots, taking it round him was risky in terms of being driven wide and requiring a tight angle finish albeit in hindsight was probably still the most likely to succeed, as it was he tried to hit it low and hard near to the keeper which is a practiced technique for 1v1 finishing as it makes it hard for the keeper to react and adjust their (usually long) legs and feet to block the shot. As it was the keeper did react to block the shot but I'd say this particular 1v1 is a far harder chance than most are giving credit for and that's basically down to the elite level goalkeeping decision making and reactions on show from their GK. I do think an elite confident striker would have attempted the go-around and finish into an open goal from an angle but it was by no means a done deal even if attempted as the keeper's stance and positioning was excellent and gave him maximum reaction to change to the final shot. Context to your post is criticising Tel for not doing "what ive seen Messi and Hoddle doing" in similar situations bit harsh. Its like comparing every building built to the Sagrada Familia and saying "its a bit sh*t really"
