inverted wingers/wide players

Its a waste of time whipping crosses in from wide against teams who have 4 or 5 men in the box.
The reality we now play against teams looking to get a point and sit back against us.

You don't have to get the ball wide to the corner flag and then cross into a congested box. You can pass from around the corner of the box and the goal line into the box, either creating a shooting chance or room for another pass. Especially if you can move the ball quickly on the break, it can be very effective.

You often see teams (not so much us recently) create a triangle in these areas. The full back and winger, with a midfield player completing the 3 on the edge or inside the box. Manu used to use this.

Against teams that sit back, we need better movement. We are getting better, but there is more to come. Some traditional Spurs pass and move will help us unlock teams. We have the pace and guile to unlock stubborn teams. Just need more confidence and practice as a team with passing and movement. There are encouraging signs.

Did you not watch bayern on wednesday night! Inverted wingers produce more goals and goals win games!

Its the way the modern game is going! But from a spurs prospective i still believe we wont see the best of soldado untill lamela is in the team as all townsend is interested in is shooting instead of the pass RS needs!

I'd be interested in seeing some stats on the number of goals scored from crosses. I suspect that there is probably a pretty low conversion rate but don't have anything to back it up.

Not many teams in world football score from crosses nowadays (unless it's a set piece).

Emirates Marketing Project have scored eight goals from crosses in the Premier League this season (none of which were set pieces :-" ) http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/fourfourtwo-preview-man-city-vs-everton#weQeWZeTSkr8P7tg.99

A distinct lack of quality crossing from our overlapping fullbacks so far this season, doesn't help having to play Naughton on the left of course...

If we are playing 4-2-3-1 then orthodox wingers don't really make sense to me, unless perhaps you have a Benteke up top with a goal scoring midfielder who is always in the box. (basically a 4-4-1-1). Orthodox winger only seem to work in a 4-4-2 nowadays.

It depends on your full backs if you ask me. In a system where both your attacking wide men are inverted and cut inside, then you need two wing backs in the full back position.

Yep, absolutely. I think that is AVB's tactic. It all dramatically falls down when Rose our only left sided full back isn't playing. I'd almost be tempted to play Townsend at left back at home when Rose is out just so the formation still works properly. Siggy would be free to roam and we would keep our width.

our attacking play is dependent on the full backs??......GHod help us

where is the variation in tactics, in style, ability to cope with sudden changes....all this money spent in 2 years, sh!t hot bright young coach, and all our attacking play falls apart when one full back gets injured. Im sorry but it stinks

Plus, Walker and Rose, our best full backs by a mile from the alternatives we have, are not even that talented to be able to play their roles successfully!!:-k

this is why Lennon is an asset to our team.

I'm really interested to see our team with Townsend on the left and Lamela on the right if I am honest with you.

Love the new Avatar :ross:

Well done Mods. And that's something you won't hear me say very often ;)

Totally agree. If we are going to exclusively reliant on overlapping full backs (GHod help us) then we need better back up in these specialist positions. Even at right back, Naughton doesn't fit this bill and at left back, we have precisely no one!

Townsend put some decent crossers in with his right peg in Sunday. I don't think I've ever seen sigh cross a ball

All our wingers seem to be set up for the inverted style but I'm not a fan of it either and on Sunday Demel had everyone attacking him in his pocket. I would have switched Townsend over to there for him to have a go. Lennon will help despite his flaws as he normally cuts it back for someone to run onto or stand it up which does hurt if your short

The problem is really there are very few great attacking full backs out there. AVB may well dream of a day when we play like we have a Roberto Carlos and a Cafu, but in reality we have a Walker and a Rose!

so isnt AVB's plan flawed?

Only Baines, Evra and Cole spring to mind in the Premier League. I wonder how much better Coentrao would've made our left flank if we'd managed to sign him... :-k

This whole reliance on the full-backs for attacking makes the decision to send BAE out on loan even more ridiculous.

and look how much Walker has been flogged this season so far. Im not surprised he looked injured/shattered against West Spam. He has played all the league games, played most if not all the cup game at Villa, played against Tiblisi at home (WTF), why the heck he played in Anzhi i will never know. If he gets injured, then all of AVB's plans are well and truly buggered.
