General Transfer Rumour Discussion Thread

The attributes of a ball playing CB and s DM are not dissimilar.
Could be that Dier likes to play centrally ( RB is a different game these days), so DM would suit his skills and ambition

Could be, but can we agree that, given his past actions, it's at least somewhat unlikely?

It is, if you're targeting top 4 next season instead of this one, which I believe is the case. Gives you a whole season to make a great DM out of Dier.

Or....we could just buy one, you know. Who, as a specialised DM (with years of training and experience in that role), would likely do far more both this season and next than Dier will in that role.

I personally see Dier and CCV as our future CB pairing once Toby and Jan are broken up (for whatever reasons), with Wimmer being the wildcard and Veljkovic shifting into a DM role or being sold. I don't think Dier being hastily repurposed into a DM would serve us particularly well, given that vision of our future.

We could, but in the end whatever we think doesn't matter. We'll just have to wait and see. I was just throwing an alternative theory out there, which I don't know if it's true, but definitely not farfetched.

Understood and duly appreciated, but in my eyes it's more unlikely than otherwise.

I admit I haven't seen any of Dier at DM this pre season, and I also missed the game at OT. But I just can't picture him being mobile enough for that type of role...am I wrong? Does he get around the pitch well enough?

He does, Dier is actually reasonably quick.

What I saw in preseason was a player a little "stiff" (uncomfortable in unfamiliar role), trying to keep it simple, either play it safe under any kind of pressure (back or out), or if with room give to Bentaleb or Eriksen as quickly as he can.

Not going to argue that we shouldn't but an experienced/dedicated DM, but don't think it's anything but a good learning experience for Dier.

Yeah I know he's quick, I had more concerns about his mobility - he doesn't look as agile as most players in that position would be...but maybe I'm wrong about that. Sounds like he has potential there then, sounds promising....

Why does everyone believe that Dier is a temporary solution? He had a good outing yesterday in his first competitive match as a DM and can only get better in that role. Just because he started out as a CB doesn't mean he has to remain one for the rest of his career. Did anyone consider that he may actually be our long-term DM solution and that maybe Poch has seen some potential there that we're all missing?

Have to agree with this Poch obviously sees something in Dier, he was good yesterday in his first big test and until/if we get a upgrade on Mason for that position he is likely to stay there.

Dier is I suppose a bit like Matic in terms of build, tall like Emmanuel Petit, rather than short and nippy like many DM's or "the African athletic stereotype" i.e. could do 3 backflips from a standing start if required.

lots of noise about this Armadillo chap from Betis!

I wonder whether he's soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

So from all the inked players who should we be singing? Maybe we should start a poll with all the link players.

I guess Berahino would top most peoples list - a proved prem goal scorer with pace. Makes sense. But we need midfield reinforcements. Since Modric (and Parker?) left we have lacked quality in midfield. Its been an ongoing problem for us.

He'll cost a dime or two

fudge off. There, sorted.

hmm bit left-field, what makes you ask? i havent seen us linked anywhere

People above were saying we wouldn't pay his release clause. No mention of any links, just chit chat.

Though I looked him up and sounds a beast, only player to get in La Liga team of the year from outside the big 2. Maybe we should just pay it if it's not ridiculous.
