Europa League - 2015

Hi

Quick question(s) - As the winners of the Europa league in 2015 will be guaranteed a spot in the champions league the following season....

Does this mean if we win the thing the team who comes fourth in the league(****) will drop out or will there be 5 teams from England in the champions league that year.

Also, if the winners of the Europe league in 2015 are already guaranteed a champions league spot through league qualification - Do the runners up get the additional spot? If not, who does?

Cheers

Re: Europa League - 2015

From Wikipedia so not 100% certian it's correct:

The UEFA Executive Committee held in May 2013 approved the following changes to the UEFA Champions League starting from the 2015–16 season (for the three-year cycle until the 2017–18 season):[3]

The winners of the previous season's UEFA Europa League will qualify for the UEFA Champions League. They will enter at least the play-off round, and will enter the group stage if the berth reserved for the Champions League title holders is not used.

The previous limit of a maximum of four teams per association will be increased to five, meaning that if the Champions League title holders finish outside the top four of their domestic league (if the winner is from the one of the top three ranked associations), the fourth-placed team of their association will not be prevented from participating in the tournament. However, if both Champions League and Europa League winners are from the same association and if both teams finish outside the top four of their domestic league, the fourth-placed team of their association will still be prevented from participating in the tournament.

Re: Europa League - 2015

Thanks - it does shed some light, though the additional spot where they Europa league winners and qualification through the league still needs to be confirmed

Re: Europa League - 2015

Yeah, that wasn't mentioned so I'm guessing that only the winners get through in the same way that if the CL winners qualify via their league the CL runner's up don't get the spot.

Re: Europa League - 2015

Third qualifying round draw............18/07/14

Third qualifying round, first leg........31/07/14
Third qualifying round, second leg....07/08/14

Re: Europa League - 2015

Win the EL - deny 4th place Arsenal a CL place - how great would that be :)

Or the more likely scenario - finish 4th, Everton win EL

Re: Europa League - 2015

I remember reading that this would result in 5 teams from England qualifying - with 4th in the league entering CL qualifiers

Re: Europa League - 2015

We need someone like Cheatski to win the CL as well. Two title holders means 4th place get EL.

Re: Europa League - 2015

ah balls this again

Hope we play fredericks right back and velkovic centre back bentaleb in midfield with carroll(if he does not get a prem loan) townsend or pritchard on the wings and Kane in every game till we get knocked out or till we reach the quarter finals when we can start to play better more experienced players.

Even though the winner gets CL football?

Re: Europa League - 2015

Even though the winner gets CL football?

I see your point but yes, if we can not beat the teams and qualify from a group playing a mixture of youth and squad players I would be worried. Once we get to the quarters start bringing in the better players. By which stage we will have sown up 4th in the league.

Re: Europa League - 2015

We'd be stupid not to make getting out of the groups a priority - a bad start to the league season and any hope of a CL place via top 4 could be all but over by Christmas - in that situation you'd want to be able to switch focus to the knock out stages of the EL.

Re: Europa League - 2015

So the priority for the season is Top 4, followed by Europa league. Put second string in the league/FA cup

Re: Europa League - 2015

Not sure. Uefa site says that's where the 6th place team enters. Have we leapfrogged Hull?

As I understand it, Emirates Marketing Project's place in the group stages went to Everton, we got the play-off stage entry and Hull are in the 3rd qualifying round.

Re: Europa League - 2015

The way i read it is, Hull are in the groupe stage, Everton are in the play off, and we are in Q3.

Re: Europa League - 2015

"Redistribution rules[edit]

A Europa League place is vacated when a team qualifies for both the Champions League and the Europa League, or qualifies for the Europa League by more than one method. When a place is vacated, it is redistributed within the national association by the following rules:[6]
When the domestic cup winners (considered as the "highest-placed" qualifier within the national association with the latest starting round) also qualify for the Champions League, their Europa League place is vacated. As a result, either of the following teams qualify for the Europa League: The domestic cup runners-up, provided they have not yet qualified for European competitions, qualify for the Europa League as the "lowest-placed" qualifier (with the earliest starting round), with the other Europa League qualifiers moved up one "place" (the 2014–15 season will be the last with this particular arrangement).[4]
Otherwise, the highest-placed team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa League qualifiers which finish above them in the league moved up one "place"."

So my understanding is that as Arsenal won the FA Cup AND qualified for the CL the runners-up go through as the "lowest-placed" team and everyone else bumps up a spot.

So Everton go straight in to the Group stage, we enter at the playoff round and Hull get to go in at Q3.
