Id say it depends on wording, so if it was simply "until he is employed elsewhere" then they wouldnt have a leg to stand on.

Not really. If he is under contract until xx date, and Utd terminate that contract early, he's perfectly at liberty to sit it out and take the payments he would otherwise have been due, assuming that is what the compensation relates to. There should be nothing to stop him enquiring about jobs,or receiving job offers and then turning them down.
