Circus ManUnitus - Erik's At The Wheel

Louis van Gaal has admitted he turned down the chance to manage Belgium so that he could continue to receive compensation for being sacked by Manchester United.

In an interview with Dutch newspaper Volkskrant, the 66-year-old said he was motivated by 'revenge' in his decision to turn down the role.

Surely turning down a job is grounds enough for Man Utd to cease his compo payments? If they hadn't included that clause in his contract Woodward needs shooting.

Not really. If he is under contract until xx date, and Utd terminate that contract early, he's perfectly at liberty to sit it out and take the payments he would otherwise have been due, assuming that is what the compensation relates to. There should be nothing to stop him enquiring about jobs,or receiving job offers and then turning them down.

Good laugh scanning the UK media today as they try to guess the terms and conditions of Sanchez' new deal. DM has it at half a mil per week, GoonerGraph - in an 'Exclusive!' - said it was 350k. All over the map and it changes every 30-40 mins., depending on whether Micktaryan agrees to move to Arsenal. I'd hate to see Spurs doing business like this in Jan.

Independent had a good assessment of the deal saying it's good for Mourinho, with a very short-term agenda to win or leave, but bad for the club splashing out ridiculous sums for an older player, likening to the Van Persie purchase Fergie made in his final year.
