Champions League 2017/18

We'll soon have the pleasure of discussing who we'd like to face in the next round. The groups are starting to shape up and show us the likely winners and runners-up. We can't meet clubs with *

Group - Winner - Runner up

A - ManU - CSKA or Basel
B - PSG - Bayern
C - Roma - Chelsea*
D - Barca - Juventus
E - Liverpool - Sevilla
F - ManC - Shaktar
G - Besiktas - Porto
H - Spurs - RealMad*

Group D could swing either way. So, what's your pleasure? Big name club (Bayern, Juve) or lesser light (Basel, Shaktar)?

Anyone that doesn't mean stupid traveling to outer mongolia

I'm not fussed who we get.

We have a chance in this.

Anyone who is suspect at defending ala Dortmund Madris Liverpool.....is toast.

We could win this much like Leicester won the league.......giving away possession then smashing them on the counter.

Obviously (i think) not every opponent plays the same, and any team with a decent defence will give us a good game but we have shown that we can play more than one way as well.

We could see a far eastern journey, but they'd definitely offer a weaker opponent. And it comes with a brightener or two.

Shakhtar are likely to finish second to Emirates Marketing Project.

Spartak are in with a shout to pip Liverpool, who provide a compelling sidebar with all kinds of worry in the days ahead. Feature this sked:

Nov. 18 - Southampton
Nov. 21 - @ Sevilla (who will top group w a win. Spartak draw even w Liv. by beating Maribor)
Nov. 25 - Chelsea
Nov. 29 - @Stoke (Wet, windy Wednesday)
Dec. 2 - @ Brighton
Dec. 6 - Spartak (Free tube of Skweeky Bum Kreme for first 54,000. Sevilla clinch 1st @ Maribor)
Dec. 10 - Everton

The other upside aspect to playing out east is that the first leg is away on Feb. 13/14. We play Arsenal at home on Feb. 10 and return to face the FA Cup 5th round on Feb. 17. Which we may or may not be in. If we are, we can always run out the depth players.

A little travel won't wreck us.

I'm watching our next CL opponents Dortmund tonight. So many good players but they are playing like complete strangers. Stuttgart could have scored 6 or 7.

Yarmelenko is a delightful player though. The sort of player you bring on to pry open a deep lying defense, not that it is working tonight mind.

tottenham hotspur fc are in the last 16 of champions league whatever happens, arsenal are playing on thursday night, no further comment needed.

Rules are that we can't play any of the other teams who finish top. Any other team who is English. Or Real Madrid. We play first leg away.

Potential opponents: Basel, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk, Porto.

Discuss
Basel, expensive as hell, great fondu though
Munich, would be an incredible away day
Juve, the old lady, again a brilliant experience but it always kicks off in Italy
Seville, a brick hole of a ground and the police were total dingdongs the last time we were there
Shakhtar, no thanks
Porto, yes please nice and warm in Feb

Porto or Basel. Save the big guns for the Quarter final, semi and final.

Agree with that. Any last 16 team in the CL would be a big game and a tough game, but would prefer to have a weaker team. Its another €6m-odd prize money alone for getting through that round as well so financially worth it as well!

Some interesting maths:

After Man U's today's 1-0 loss against Basel they risk not qualifying. If CSA Moscow win with 5 goals CSA will bypass Man U. If CSA win with 8 goals, Basel will bypass man U too. CSA need to win with 2 goals to bypass Basel. (all assuming Basel win their last match).

I think we can say Man U is through.

With the new stadium delayed by several years, I see Cheatski have decided to use their money elsewhere, namely paying off referees again. 2 ridiculous penalties, and an even more ridiculous sending off gives them the win.
