Brennan Johnson

We all know Johnson's limitations but he is a big asset regardless. Until we have a couple of forwards who demonstrate they can get 20 plus goals in a season then Johnson is not going to be surplus to requirements. Putting the ball in the net is the most difficult thing to do, Kudus for all his skill has a poor scoring record as a forward, Solanke is a wait and see and Johnson scored more than him last season, Richi can't be relied on fitness wise to date, and then you're looking at the likes of Tel and Odobert.

In short, right now we have bigger worries than Johnson who currently is a valuable squad option....

But options are what is the we need and writing off 18 goals is such a spurs way of thinking

Don't understand this comment actually. Who is writing off 18 goals? I'm certainly not.

Brennan gets a goal for every 198 league minute he on the pitch. It's 156 mins if you include assists.
Richi equivalent stats are 126 mins and a 100 mins on much less minutes.

We're in 4 competitions and there are 5 subs in all games. There is plenty of pitch time available for everyone to generate some great goal and assist stats. Just like yesterday where our front 3 had 2 goals, 1 goal and 2 assists. That is a good day at the office for a front line.

In do want to be clear though. Because posters constructively tease apart Johnson's game, that is not them writing him off or wanting him sold. My point above is more about what would it take for him to become more relevant aside from the goals. How does a manager get more out of him? I have a feeling we are starting to see that with Sarr. What would it take to get the same from Johnson? When would we see him have over 50 touches in a game rather than 27? He's clearly good on the ball and can make things happen. We want him on the ball.

It's early days though. Most of our assumptions still come from an Ange setup. This is now a Frank setup so that might be a natural way it happens.

The mental gymnastics we do when we want to laud a player we love or put down another we don't, would fill a psychology book. If you want to talk about genesis, then Porro's ball to Richy was probably even more relevant. However the exodus was all Johnson's.... from the vision to see the space, the timing of the run, the initial control, the coolness of mind and the nonchalant flick with the outside of the boot were pure genius... but things that can only be appreciated with an unbiased mind.....
You're misunderstanding as well. Please I appreciate the finish I described it as superb. I can see the deftness of the touch to lift it just enough to beat the keeper. Non of that is in dispute. What is being questioned by me is, does that goal negate the rest of the performance?

For me it does not, I'm not interested in moments. I look at the sum of the performance. It's like the age old thing where a player who scores a goal in a close game is often given MOTM, whereas that's usually not even the case but the weight of a goal for some people holds more weight than the rest of the 90 minutes.

Look It's fine, if for you yesterday's performance by him was fine, perfect or brilliant even because of the goal then cool. We'll have to agree to disagree because for me the goal does not out weigh the rest of the 80 odd minutes he had on the pitch.

Scoring a goal does not mean you've had a good game and he almost objectively had a bad game yesterday. I don't understand why we as a fan base are so willing to settle for mediocre?

I guess im not entirely clear and what he is meant to be? I get what @Bishop is saying. He is winger and I too feel he needs to add more to his game.

But if we are willing to accept the deficiencies for the goals. Then I guess I will just accept him for his goals. I noticed he was in a lot of space on the left and not found. I dont know what the answer is.

But when he doesn't score.....nothing much else is added. Maybe Frank has the key. But goals help!! He has good scoring technique and ability to be in the right place at right time and also can be non-existent.

Both can be true at the same time

He's not going anywhere (unless Bishop joins our transfer committee).

I think the challenge I have with some of your arguments is that you talk as if it is 100% on the player. Now I'm not denying that a big chunk of this is on the player themselves. It is definitely nowhere near all though. He can only operate in the environment he is given to work in and can only do what he's instructed to do tactically.

Yesterday I saw a game that started where we were getting success down our right. None of the other players were using Brennan even though he made himself constantly available. The midfield 3 were massively guilty of not getting the ball to him. Then Scotty noticed what was happening and nullified our right for a big chunk of the game. Still, we didn't use Djed and Brennan and still kept on going to the right. I was getting really frustrated with our midfielders about it.

Like you, I want to see Brennan more relevant in games. It's not just about the goalscoring stats and I have proved above that his goals per minute contribution isn't exceptional. It is decent though.

We just need to give Frank more time. Give him his full compliment of players by the end of the transfer window and then let him go to work on them. Let's see who he selects and which players perform best in his system. We'll probably know more in the second half of the season to make better judgment calls on individual players in his setup.

I think it's ok if he's going to be the player who doesn't "put himself about" (although his "assists" stats were very good too), we have other players for that. But his runs into goal scoring position is a rare talent and his ability to be there to score goals will, IMHO, keep his transfer value high.

People who want Johnson out
And I’d love to see an upgrade on him
But every club that takes the goals out of their team struggles
Richie stats you quote are for him at cf by the way

Yeah his value will be high. @Bishop general perspective is right about the quality of our forwards, but I wouldn't be looking to get rid of Johnson until one or two of our other forwards show they can get a good amount of goals and right now they don't - literally none of them.

If a Tel and or Odobert/Moore develop over the next year or two to show this then great and in the meantime Johnson should still have a good sell on value because his overall stats will still show him to be contributing with plenty of goals/assists. But that is a consideration for some time down the line.

I'm intrigued to see what Frank looks to do with him, as he wanted him at Brentford. Don't know whether LW is where he truly sees him, but interested to see what happens....

But those players won’t develop here if we buy Savio
He will be starting and they will be even further down the order
It’s why I don’t get that deal
I would if it was a bargain
And u know people will say we shouldn’t settle which I get
But having brought these guys and also having real talent coming through sometimes you have to accept what you have and grow that … but I’m not a football mansger

I get what you're saying, but the likes of Tel and Odobert are speculative buys who if don't work out we can still sell at worst for not too much of a loss because of their age and clearly have some ability.

I know you really don't get the Savinho deal but he is one year older than Tel and is lightyears ahead of him IMO....

He is way ahead
No arguments
But the fee is still IMO of that of an elite, proven player
How the hell do we develop the lads we have when they have a guy ahead of them that would be in the 5 most expensive wingers in the world (at a guess)
