Oscar Pistorius arrested after girlfriend shot dead

South African Paralympic star may have mistaken girlfriend for an intruder, local media reports.

South African Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been arrested by South African police for allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria, local media widely reported.

Pretoria police have confirmed that a 30-year-old woman has died after being shot this morning at the home of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius in the Silver Lakes area of Pretoria.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested, a police spokeswoman confirmed, with local reports claiming the person is Pistorius.

Local radio and online newspaper reports said the sprinter may have shot her after mistaking her for an intruder, but no details could be confirmed. A spokeswoman for Pretoria police declined to confirm the identity of the man in custody. "I can confirm that a woman has been fatally wounded in a shooting at Oscar Pistorius' house," she said. "A 26-year-old man has been taken into custody. The incident happened at 3am. We received a call and attended the scene. The call did not come from the man in custody but from another person. Currently there is an inquiry into what happened."

Johannesburg's Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was understood to have shot his girlfriend in the head and arm, although the circumstances surrounding the incident were unclear. He may have mistaken her for a burglar, the radio report said. South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime and some home-owners carry weapons to defend themselves against intruders.

Pistorius, known as Blade Runner thanks to the carbon fibre prosthetic blades he wears to race is the world's best-known Paralympic star. The sprinter - who was born without a fibula in both legs and had his legs amputated as a 11-month-old - made history at London 2012 when he became the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and Paralympics, running in the 400m and 4x400m relay. During and after the competition he regularly tweeted pictures of he and his girlfriend together.

The Johannesburg-born athlete won a legal battle over his blades with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in 2008 for the right to compete in able-bodied competition.

If it's him and he didn't make the emergency call, that will add to the suspicion.

so dodgy. how do you just shoot someone who's unifentified to you? not like she was wearing a balaclava or anything..

Police have commented that their have been previous incidents at that property. I suppose it could go both ways. Previous robberies might make his preemptive action more explainable, but if it involves any behaviour of his he could be in trouble.

What she was wearing will also have a bearing. If its a semi-naked model in the kitchen it will be harder to plead self defence.

A South African police officer has confirmed that there was a shooting at the home of Oscar Pistorius with a 30-year-old woman shot dead. He will appear in magistrates court in Pretoria at 12:00 GMT and has been arrested and charged with murder.

The officer says: "There have previously been incidents at the home of Oscar Pistorius, allegations of a domestic nature. There are no reports of forced entry or persons on the premises not meant to be there."

Claims that Pistorius thought his girlfriend was a burglar "did not come from us", she adds.
From BBC.

Apparently this is from his website (I'm guessing it has been/will be removed shortly):

@frankieboyle
The tragedy is that if Oscar Pistorius had no arms, this would never have happened

On a serious note, if he has just gunned down his girlfriend then he should be locked up forever. Poor, poor woman.

Yup, they pulled the ad from his website.

Nike are building quite a collection with this and the ad with Armstrong's challenge "What are you on?"
