Ange’s system / formation

Comparisons to Poch surely also has to take into account the quality of the best teams in the league at that time compared to now.

It takes time. Like it did for Poch, Arteta, Klopp. There's so much to be optimistic and happy about. Some of the football we're playing is breathtaking.

We're still short on missing pieces in the starting 11, then also the squad. Like for those other managers that have needed time.

If we're still seeing those same weaknesses hurting us with a similar frequency a year from now I'll start getting concerned.

The job Ange has done so far has been incredibly impressive. Losing Kane, completely changing the way we play, integrating a lot of new players, quite a few younger players without PL experience.

I think he'll continue to do very impressive work. Why wouldn't he with another summer transfer window, another preseason, players more used to his system.
Because your trying to apply logic rather than reactionary vibes

But.. we can get better players in, world class ones even. Unless he addresses the Achilles heels of set ounces and counter attacks (the latter can be addressed with better players) we’re screwed

I kinda agree with @DubaiSpur that we have a decent sample size now.

I’m concerned, based on what we have seen for the few months, that I can’t see any kind of consistent plan in either direction.

I’m frustrated that he appears to be stubborn in changing things that clearly are not working.

I can’t remember what I expected at the start of the season, but right now I expect much better than this.

That’s the thing, he should be adjusting his approach for the players he has, then focus things when he has the upgrades.

You don’t try and teach a rabbit to play fetch because you are getting a dog in the future.

There is absolutely no way you could have predicted what was to come with Poch after his first season. He showed promise, but how the fudge can you sit there and say Ange hasn’t shown at least similar promise? To write him off after less than a season…see the rest of my post above. It’s pathetic.

fudge I am so sick of the negativity of people like you. It’s so fudging boring.

He literally done this in the post you're responding to - you might disagree with it but he has given his opinion and it's pretty fair from my reading, apart from maybe predicting the ceiling that we have with Postecoglou

Yes...exactly...that's a pretty big asterix on the post.

Every system improves with better players.
Yes of course, using the example of Liverpool (sorry about that @Baleforce) they improved massively by adding a world class keeper and centre-back. I suppose my point was by how much we can improve defensively within the confines of our present system by upgrading certain positions.

I think he has already addressed or prevented many Achilles heels. I wouldn't expect us to be Achilles heel free at the end of his first season.

Him downplaying the need for a set piece specialist is slightly concerning perhaps? But I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt about finding solutions. That doesn't have to be a dedicated set pice coach, but we have to improve quite a bit from where we are now.

For context … if we had an effective set piece coach we would still be in the title race
That’s the impact of set pieces
It’s a third of arsenals goals for and they don’t concede from them
It’s massive and a game changer

Maybe based on the numbers you're right, but we still have other very clear weak spots. For example, we're vulnerable on the break, get sucked into emotional battles every other game (Maupay etc). But to run with it...that's pretty fudging amazing to think that if we just defend set pieces better we're in the top 3 after 10 months of Ange and post-Harry Kane.

City are vulnerable on the break
Arsenal add too
Teams that dominate are and that would need fixing
But set pieces are things that escalate and become toxic
The teams know every time they get one against us they can score and our defenders know it too

Said this in another thread too, but I think perhaps it's also a squad buildup issue.

We're a bit short and don't have a lot of players that are really aggressive or dominant physically on the air. Even a really effective set piece specialist may not replicate what the best set piece teams do with this squad.

But a lot of room for improvement. Both through coaching, perhaps a new coach, and through perhaps getting some big lads in to the squad. Perhaps part of the reasoning behind going for Dragusin. Think we've been linked with some DMs that are on the bigger side too. A big striker etc.

Think the point on getting sucked into emotional battles is spot on and you can see it irks Ange. Even yesterday, at times we played into their timewasting antics with some silly fouls or arguing. It's been a recurring theme this season and just throws you off your game. It's a very immature thing to be doing but we do have a few immature/combustible personalities in our squad.

And I agree
We have progressed massively and it’s quickly being forgotten
If the league results were flipped and we were ending the season with the start we had the fans would be bouncing

Just a striker.. please
But yeah the size thing is possibly an issue but also coaching is massive
Wolves scored a corner with the shorter man on the pitch
