Danny Rose

I was sure Dier would step into midfield and Rose take the LB slot with Vertonghen dropping back. It seemed to work though with Rose at DM

Rose did play in midfield a bit when on loan at Sunderland iirc.

It made sense for him to go on in that position tonight, as his task seemed to be to shuttle back and forth -- out wide to help Vert and then inside again to crowd the middle.

I thought so too, but I realized that it probably wouldn't be wise to break up the centre-back group so late in the game. They'd probably established an understanding, and assigned duties about who to mark, who to track, when to step up and so on - taking Dier out and putting Verts in might have disrupted that, and any disruption might have been fatal to the excellent job they were all doing.

I guess that was the thinking. If it ain't broke don't broke it.

He didn't want to disrupt a working defence.. So brave.. he played cm at beginning of his career
So a defence doesn't work when it concedes a goal?

I thought rose to LB and Dier in front of the CB's would have worked better as real Madrid were resorting to lumping crosses in the last part of the game and started to look threatening.

When Rose came in, I thought the same thing. But unconventional wisdom suggests several good reasons for playing Rose there at that point.

Rose has better wheels than Dier, thus quicker at getting amongst Real's playmakers with the ball and disrupting service to the Real attackers. Plus the threat he'd pose on a counter attack would be greater than Dier's because of his pace, which might also have served to keep some of Real's backline from coming too far forward to increase their pressing. If Rose had any issues with his knee, better to have a break down in midfield than on the last line of defence.

In time, I'm sure we'll see Rose prowling his everyday beat on the left, but this was a great illustration of Poch's creative approach to making more flexible use of his players.

Rose is also a master at getting free kicks and it breaks up play and momentum
He won 3 in the short time he was on

Yep! He did what was asked of him when he came on. Was like a little dog chasing them in midfield, and then darting out left to support Vertongen when needed. Good to have him back!

they didnt conceed after he made the change?

Good to see him back, like a new signing. Perhaps we've forgotten how good he is or how important his drive is for the team. Hope fans can look past his stupidity seems to come with the territory of being a footballer these days.

Not all will unfortunately.

Putting Rose straight in at LB after 10 months out or however long it has been would've been an ordeal for him. And us. Poch got it right again.

It looked to me as though Poch put him on as a screening player but primarily towards the left side to give Vertonghen some help. Madrid were doubling up constantly and often pulling 3 players out there. Sissoko was very disciplined giving Aurier help in the same situations on our right but Vertonghen wasn't quite getting that same sort of help.

Great to see Danny back. Hopefully he can soon rediscover the superb form he was in when he picked up his injury.
