Did the Dippers avoid qualifying because of Villa losing to the Goons? I thought 6th was a qualifying round job?

Yep. Liverpool into the Group Stages with us, while Southampton start at the 3rd Qualifying Round stage and West Ham in the 1st Qualifying Round in a few weeks time!

From this year BT Sports have the rights in Britain. ITV will only be showing highlights.
As a Virgin Media customer I asked one of their sales reps outside Morrison's whether my XL package would include CL and Europa games next season. He said it would, and at no extra charge, but it was said without conviction.

Then I saw this:

http://www.seenit.co.uk/bt-and-virgin-media-in-talks-about-new-champions-league-channel/

One of BT’s most senior TV executives has said the firm’s newly announced european football channel is not part of its existing deal with Virgin Media.

The cable company has a wholesale deal for BT’s original three sport channels which it provides to customers taking its XL TV pack. Virgin Customers with lower tier packages can buy the channels as a separate add-on.

However Jamie Hindhaugh, Chief Operating Officer for BT Sport and BT TV, has told SEENIT that the existing deal doesn’t cover the new BT Sport Europe channel which will become the new UK home to the Champions League and Europa League from this summer.

Hindhaugh said talks were underway between the two rivals but declined to comment on whether any deal would see the channels joining its stablemates as part of Virgin’s top channel packs.

fudge! I recently upgraded my broadband to fibre optic (approx 60M speed, apparently).

However, i'm with PLUSNET. I have a BT phone though. It's one thing to not be able to watch CL and just see highlights (hey ho..); however it's totally another thing to not be able to watch Harry Kane on a Thursday night, even if it's vs FC Pigfarmer etc. Never mind me, i don't know what my son will do: he LOVES Harry Kane!

I've tied myself down to an 18 month contract and the annoying thing is that I suspect BT may have given me similar speed at similar cost but with the BT Sport package.

Is there any minimal package i can get with just me having a BT Phoneline?

:(

With the Polish and Greek playoffs done, all the entrants are now known. This is the pots for the group stage if all the seeded teams win their games, * means EL qualifying round entry and @ means CL.

Dynamo Moscow have been excluded by UEFA for breaching FFP rules. Expect them to be replaced in the 3rd qualifying round by Rubin Kazan who were the next highest placed team in the Russian League. If Rubin Kazan progress to the group stage they will be in Pot 1 which, assuming that all seeded teams win their games, would modify the above pots by moving Fiorentina from Pot 1 to 2 and Monaco from Pot 2 to 3.

What else do you do on a Thursday at 6:30...or 5:30...possibly even 4:30pm!?

The Europa has been great for us to see our promising youth players in action; and it gives the squad tough competitive games. I never thought I'd say it, but I can't wait until its back!

I just hope the management team are large enough and experienced enough to dedicate at least one person to the competition. We have a big enough squad, but not necessarily a management team who can plan and prepare thoroughly for both the League and the Europa.

Looking forward to it starting up again myself. I've heard and understood the various arguments against participating in it (or taking it seriously). I just think those arguments are completely wrong. Or at the very best, are out-weighed by stronger counter-arguments.

Roll on Thursday night football... I love it.

The image above is from last October:
  • Lamela scores with outrageous finish
  • Kane claims first hat-trick of his career
  • Kane ends night in goal after Lloris red card
  • Spurs go joint top of Group C

I have mixed feelings on the competition and will probably decide that it is a ploy by the Champions League clubs to handicap the challengers again before the end of the season but I still remember how brilliant it was when we qualified again under Jol. The tail end of that season was brilliant and probably my happiest in the modern era other than the year in the Champions League.

Ah! The 2006/07 season, unforgettable.

The emergence of Berba, EL games worth watching, finally beating Chelsea, the team scoring over 100 goals, the style of football in itself.

Happy memories :)

Our first ever European game. Beat Bruges 3-1. Their fans were mental, brought over 50 coaches.
We got home at 5am in the morning, pumped up to the eyeballs on Red bull for the drive home and the missus on the dance machine at Stafford Services at 3am in the morning. A top top night out...

We were not at all convincing in any Cup matches under Pochettino last season. Just can't see us improving much this season as well. Besides, our squad are much smaller than last season. Not sure how we are going to divide the team between league and Europe.

Don't forget about Ghaly ! I really enjoyed his performances that season, especially his inch perfect crosses to Berbatov, Keane and Mido.

Hear, hear.

For those who are vehemently against the EL: one question. How can we keep the likes of Alli, Pritchard, Carroll, Wimmer interested and active if it were not for this competition?

Pretty much agree with this. I would love to win the competition, but we have not progressed past the quarter finals in over a decade and I don't think we have a good enough to defence to go any further this year.
