Andros Townsend

He doesn't, you're right. But once again it's an Occam's razor principle... who is likely to make the wrong call? A coach who is becoming acknowledged as one of the best around and who has exceeded expectations by extract unimaginable results from a under-performing bunch of players and who has shown himself to be a sharp judge of player capabilities both in his promotion of youth and discarding of has beens? Or - like both of us - someone hitting the keys of a computer keyboard and putting across ideas and perceptions that are basically wannabe utterings?

Good coaches make bad calls all the time - even the best ones. The thing that separates them from the rest is how rarely they manage to make them and how few they make at any given moment.

It would be a very, very long way from the first time some amateur on a forum made a better call than a manager.

Whilst the stats have been purposely chosen to bring out Lamela's virtues, you conveniently omitted two key attributes: Attack score (Townsend 23.82 vs Lamela 15.93) and defence scores (Townsend 1.01 vs Lamela 4.84). And that has been the crux of the argument among those underwhelmed by Lamela. We all acknowledge he is much better at closing down, winning back the ball (often after he himself has lost it though). However we did not sign the Argentine to huff and puff; we bought him to blow the house down. And the same stats you quote show unequivocally that Townsend is far superior as an attacking threat

The stats were chosen to accurately reflect the discussion in hand. If we were discussion who was better at scoring penalties or giving the ball away then I'd have chosen different (relevant) stats and Townsend would have come out on top.

Attack score and defence score are by their own definition arbitrary, subjective measures. The stats chosen are about as objective as you can get in football measurements.

Much as I love debating with you, it's really a put-off when you resort to these type of condescending posts. If you want to have a discussion on inductive reasoning and probability theory in relation to Occam's Razor, I am more than game . However at the end of the day, the beauty of the application is in its simplicity: other things being equal, simpler explanations are generally better than more complex ones. So, for all your negation, your convoluted reasoning and explanation for Lamela's repeated omissions in the most important games of this season, is disproved by the razor. The simpler - and therefore more likely - explanation is clearly that Poch thinks that Townsend is better for the team, at least at this moment.

You're still not doing it right. If you're after an explanation of the theory and logical reasoning then I'm happy to help, but the tone of your post suggests otherwise.

Why have supporters of Townsend thrown Lamela into the debate. Real straw man tactic. Lamela has been just as brick as Townsend, so no defence I'm afraid.

I would like Lamela to start . Due to the simple fact he is younger and more talented. Even though both townsend and Lamela had been poor/average this season you can still see tve x-factor in Lamela. In Townsend I don't .

Townsend is an ok PL player and will never amont to anything better, Lamela is already a better player despite his faults .

Also if utd has Fellaini in the starting 11 I would line Fazio to start and take out Fellaini and stop Utd's brick longpassing tactics .

Agreed. I am still not convinced of Townsend. Both Townsend and Lamela have been poor but Lamela atleast has better finishing. I think Townsend is too selfish as he tries to score more instead of creating chances for others.

Think Townsend has improved whilst I the first team recently. Maybe he deserves a run now. Lamela has had chances too, as many others have said neither have taken their opportunity yet.

Really? That does describe the same player I have been watching recently.

He was very poor, although I think Chadli was worse. The pair of them really didn't do their jobs defensively. You can understand if they are world class players who are gonna bang in 20-30 a season, but not when they are bang average.

I wont comment on any other players just townsend as this is his thread. From that first start all those years ago against Charlton he has just not progressed as you would hope. His crossing is still poor despite his two foot ability. His shooting is awful.

Today we also see the lazy side that puts your side in danger, his lack of tracking back has been appalling and cost us dear. The is so much more to being a top level footballer then just ability going forward.

I was saying in the first ten minutes to send needs to come off as, like ways, he doesn't work hard for the team and walker wasedt stranded. Amazed Poch saw it so soon. Shame he didn't know how awful townsend was before the game though, atrocious footballer.

Poch has given him a fair crack lately, but he was so bad today he may have blown his chance. Lamela will now probably get the chance to claim the spot.

I wish someone would start playing well in that position!

Townsend is awful, people are blind they don't see it. I said onmy last week he doesn't work hard enough, doesn't offer defensive support. And today was embarrassingly bad. I'm just impressed poch saw it, I feared he didn't have that in him to make such early changes.

Can't wait to sell this goon!!!

I think a massive mistake was letting Lennon go to Everton. He offers far more than Townsend.

In saying that, I'd have Townsend on the left over Chadli who recently just doesn't look like he can be arsed.

Poch wouldnt have played Lennon anyway. He might as well be on loan at Everton than not in our match day squad.

This and This. But I can only speculate there were reasons beyond football for this.
