4-4-2

4-3-3- with players currently available

---------------Lloris

Chriches----Fazio/Verts------Davies

-----Mason---Eriksen---Bentaleb

Lennon--------Kane----------Lamela

Possible subs:
Naughton for Chiriches
Dier for Fazio/Verts
Stambouli for Mason/Bentaleb
Rose for Lamela
Chadli for Lennon/Lamela

Ade for Kane

4-3-3 isn't that far from a 4-2-3-1. The one playing off the striker drops a little deeper and the left and right forwards play as wide forwards (not the same as wingers).

I agree. I think allowing Eriksen to drop deeper but still have CM support is one of the keys to us performing well. And 4-3-3- suits the players we have at the moment a little better.
One formation can easily morph into another as you suggest. But I think psychologically it makes a difference to the players what you call the formation to start with, as it acts as reference point for where you expect them to influence the game most.

In a 4--2-3-1 with Eriksen as the #10 he tends to receive the ball in positions where he is already on or around the edge of the box, space is tight and he is unable to influence the game the way he can if he is slightly deeper. Equally if Lamela is going to make any impression (it i hope rather than a conviction) I think he needs to play in a position where dwelling on the ball is less of problem - but I would also impress upon him to get to the line then work his way in towards the box. Rather than drift inside making CM more congested.

You need players in the front 3 who score though

These guys have a combined total of 2 between them and that includes Kane's free kick off the wall IIRC

Yes but that is a transfer thing. We have been short a decent Bony like striker for several seasons. Unfortunately, we are not exactly spoilt for choice with goal scoring options.

I would very much like to see 4-3-3. Chadli plays as a forward and Kane can play as the left or right one as well. Lamela might benefit from that kind of role as well instead of being a creator.

Both Lennon and Eriksen can be used in a midfield 3, but neither are forwards.

I agree that it is interchangeable to a degree - -the main thing being 1) Get Eriksen on the ball 2) Make sure there is enough energy in midfield to support both defence and attack. 3) Have enough quick passing in the team to move the ball forward quickly.

Although Lennon won't really dribble around a player, he has the speed/energy to keep the opposite full back from pushing forward too much. Soldado is another option wide , providing he covers. But I would prefer speed as an attacking and counter threat, and there isn't much of it in the team further forward.

No point in sacking him imo. We hired him on the strength of a job he'd done at a Premier League club, so we know his methods do actually work with the right blend of players. He wasn't here to put his 2p worth in on Lamela, Paulinho, Soldado, Chriches and Capoue, all signings who have underperformed and who seem like the sort of players he wouldn't want to work with ideally.

We didn't hire him to do a job with his players ..

We hired him to get the best out of our current squad (clearly stated by Levy)

And he keeps trying to bang that square peg into the round hole over and over ..

That's my comment regularly. He needs to tweak it bit by but and unfortunately he is trying too much too quickly

4-3-3 is pretty much 4-2-3-1 anyway but instead of wingers we have inside forwards. The starting formation will always change during the game and i don't see why people think a change in formation is going to help unless we set up more defensively. Eriksen in the middle of a 4-3-3 is the same as Eriksen in the number 10 in the 4-2-3-1.

Surely Levy must've known that this guy is quite a one dimensional manager (not necessarily a bad thing) whose teams play in a certain style with a certain type of player. If we wanted someone to just get more from the same group, we might as well have stuck with Sherwood.

My preference, and this was before we got AVB, was for Benitez. But that ship has surely sailed.

I keep hearing people say this but Poch has changed things. He didn't have the same set up or tactics for Arsenal or Everton as he did for Hull or QPR.

He also had to deal with massive changes at Espanyol with a lot of players sales due to financial problems.

He hasn't played the same style with us as with Southampton, presumably because he doesn't think our players are capable of that at this point in time.

To me he seems to be more gradually moving towards his style of play, seems a sensible approach.

There are some obvious and some more subtle nuances that makes them all different from each other. Some in what roles the players have and some dependent on what players are played where. 4-2-3-1 is closer to 4-4-1-1, but the wide forwards are more attacking than traditional wingers. They also don't stay as wide. In 4-3-3 you have a 3 man central midfield. It's what we had against Everton with Eriksen on the left. Lennon was slightly more advanced, but too wide to make it a proper 4-3-3. The picture says winger, but that would leave the striker too isolated IMO, they need to attack the space between FB and CB and let our FBs go on the outside.

What both 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 need is overlapping FBs and that's where we continue to suffer.

My team that is getting laughed out of town in about 15 different threads is...

fitness permitting

----------------------------------------lloris (only 1 choice here)
walker(runs the right flank)---dier(young, can head it)----fazio(older, can head it)---rose(been good so far)
eriksen (a wonky drifter, Walker has got the flank)----Bentaleb(sit n pass)----Mason (keep doing well)---Townsend(width n pace for the left)
-------------------------------------------Kane(keep on keeping on)-----chadli(goes wide, goes deep, scores. plays like he did v Ar5ena1 away)

Pace and Width = Walker on the right, Townsend on the left
Eriksen/Bentaleb/Mason will make the play
Chadli and Kane will provide the finishing touches (who else is gonna?)
Fazio/Dier/Rose = defend and keep it simple

Poch is getting closer to this team haha. 8 of them started n Chadli came off the bench! :p

I just wanted to bump this in the hope that, one day, he'll pick that XI and hire me as assistant manager.

But for the time being we should settle on the good first 11 selection.

Nice one Dza, you keep calling it like you see it mate
