4-4-2

It isn't working a treat which is why i said that the CF needs to stay central :rio:

Edit : your reply was to ModricTHFC looking back

Even if Kane is considered to primarily be a forward, it doesn't mean he must play as a striker. A good player can perform in different roles. He has almost always been part of a 3 or played behind the lone striker in a 4-4-1-1 for the first team.

No matter what numbers we use, we still need the players in the most advanced positions to get into goalscoring positions regularly. Whether we think of them as AMs or FWs or STs has no impact on their actual ability to do that and how they work in combination with the rest of the team.

No problem. My " reply to" button seems not to be working!

We both seem to be agreed that 4231 isn't working at the moment. Your solution is to get the CF to play more centrally, mine is to get the Centre AM to play further forward and support the sole striker.

We clearly aren't going to agree but nice chatting with you all.

Yeah agreed, constructive discussions are always worth the time - even if it ends up bogged down in semantics most of the time.

I don't think the formation is the problem more that we haven't yet got the right combination atm - for me Adebayor needs to be more involved centrally, whether he drifts wide by choice or instruction i don't know but we need him (or whoever) to offer more threat in the middle.

Kane is looking good in the cups, in part because there is a CF in front who stays central, so he a deserves his chance in the league.

Soldado dropped deep many times against Brighton, but he always got back in the box. Him, Kane and Lennon/Lamela seemed to link up well and have good movement and positioning. It did look as if Townsend had been given some pretty stern instructions pre-game (stop shooting, stick to your job) and he just isn't a very good footballer. Is it just Ade that's the problem or should we make changes to the three as well?

It's a balancing act - drop deep/wide too often and the CBs can leave you for their team mates to look after - primarily stay central but mix things up a little and you give them much more to think about.

I think Lamela Kane and Soldado have linked well in the cups and would play them with one other, if down to me

The problem with any manager who is new to a club is do you get the players to fit a formation or the formation to fit the players

For me looking at how were playing the current formation isn't working as we don't have enough variation in the middle 3 and we really are struggling with the lone striker role

So playing a system that served us well last season under a manager who was apparently clueless and also served the teams that have won the league the last 3 seasons for me can't be a bad thing

I appreciate it may not be part of the long game and that can develop with the right players being brought in ideally all variations of a theme and all capable of playing their roles well

Until that happens why not evolutionise rather than revolutionise

And for the people who ask can you prove more goals are created or score with 4-4-2.... I'd say take a look at City's, United and liverpool a records over recent seasons

The problem is going to be that we are rubbish in central midfield. We struggle to create at the moment, but at least the numerous bodies floating around the centre mean we benefit a little defensively.

Who would we play in the middle of a 442? Capoue? Lumbering and shiit. Stambouli? Unknown quantity. Mason? Seems to lack a little defensive discipline despite showing promise and being one bright spot so far this season. Do we have any other central midfield options these days?

Then I assume we're putting Eriksen on the left, not exactly solid defensively, and who on the right? Chadli/Lennon. A midfield 4 of:

Eriksen.......Capoue........Mason........Lennon

looks like the stuff relegation battles are made of to me. Honestly, that is a dire midfield.

The only potential that lies in the team is in the forwards. We have to hope Lamela comes good. 442 means him on the bench for the forseeable future. I can see why Poch is clinging to 4231 for grim death as it gets our best/hopefully best players on the pitch at the same time. A team including Kane, Soldado, Lamela, Eriksen up front should have half a chance of looking creative. Especially when you add Mason's enterprise.

442 would basically be signing our own death warrant against half decent sides, imo of course.

at the minute, its more of a 442 w@nky.

By wonky you mean two wingers on one side and on the other

An no one player the link role as a striker!!!!

Maybe this is Pochs way to highlight why he doesn't like the system

It only works IMO with a pair of strikers playing together and a balance in the wide players

This looks sham olio with eriksen and chaldi constantly switching but offering no width or penetration

errm,....that IS the wonky mate ;)

although the wonky doesnt work unless you have someone that can REALLY stretch the opposition on one flank

wasnt made for chadli to be that winger

edit:- Ah riiiiight

LOL...w@nky :ross:

------------- Lloris
Naughton Kaboul Vertonghen Rose
--------- Capoue
--------------------- Mason
------ Eriksen
------------------ Chadli
------- Soldado
---------------- Ade

At the start of the game it looked a bit like this tbh.

We might as well perist with 2 up top, just let one of them be Kane and toss a coin for the other spot. Infact, stick Chadli and Kane up top, f**k off both Ade and Soldado.

you might be on to something here

the dynamic for both those guys should work

not baaaaaad man...not bad.

we using lennon or andros for one of the wings?

My team that is getting laughed out of town in about 15 different threads is...

fitness permitting

----------------------------------------lloris (only 1 choice here)
walker(runs the right flank)---dier(young, can head it)----fazio(older, can head it)---rose(been good so far)
eriksen (a wonky drifter, Walker has got the flank)----Bentaleb(sit n pass)----Mason (keep doing well)---Townsend(width n pace for the left)
-------------------------------------------Kane(keep on keeping on)-----chadli(goes wide, goes deep, scores. plays like he did v Arsenal away)

Pace and Width = Walker on the right, Townsend on the left
Eriksen/Bentaleb/Mason will make the play
Chadli and Kane will provide the finishing touches (who else is gonna?)
Fazio/Dier/Rose = defend and keep it simple

I haven't seen today's game yet, would you say that we lined up similar to Emirates Marketing Project's 4-2-2-2?
