Roberto Soldado

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

i dont know what you expected of Soldado but he is never going to be an Henry, Drogba or Shearer

he is a simple finisher, a striker that relies on service. A Lineker type lets say. These types will largely be anonymous for long periods and then bang, a good cross or a defence splitting pass in behind the defence and they come alive. Right now, our team is not providing him with this kind of service

AVB must improve the teams attacking play. Its his biggest challenge. If he fails to do this, Soldado will struggle to score goals, the team will struggle to get into the top 5, and AVB himself will be under extreme pressure from those above him

Ah here, that's not fair. My post wasn't "I demand more of him he's been useless!"

I was just trying to describe a sentiment that I think is discernible just below the surface with posts about Soldado. Nobody wants to come out and say they are a bit jittery because we all want to support him and he hasn't even broken in his new shirt. But I think that jitteriness is there and I was just trying to describe it. If I have that wrong, apologies, but I do think I sense it in many posts.

^^
Jittery?

Not me. Fans have a short attention span and I expect a few less jitters and many more "I told you sos" as the next few weeks pass.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

Apparently quite a few people think Soldado's only a poacher, a 'shoot on sight' guy, and that this is a bad thing. I disagree on both those points. Firstly, despite claims to the contrary, movement is not a myth, and Bobby has it in spades. I don't think I've ever seen Ade or Defoe anticipate a cut-back like Soldado does, his take-down and shot from Walker's cut-back against Arsenal being a prime example. Soldado's always anticipating spills from the keeper, rebounds from blocked shots, crosses and cut-backs, and that's something you can't really teach, imo, which makes it extremely valuable in a striker.

Secondly, let's assume that yes, he is indeed a poacher. Great at poaching, but somewhat one-dimensional nonetheless I'd argue that this puts our team in an advantageous position long-term: they either evolve to provide Soldado with chances to convert (which involves improving our currently dismal approach play and chance creation rate) or they're stuck trying to fashion chances without the striker for the foreseeable future, because we sure as hell aren't spending another 26 million to upgrade on the one we just bought.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

^^I think Dubai Spur is pretty spot on, just what I would add is that Soldado is a striker that plays off the last defender. His style isn't really conducive to playing it into his feet (ie a holdup striker like Ade). We wanted a striker who plays off the last man (like Soldado, Aguero, Villa, Falcao are), that by definition means that the striker is going to not be involved so much in the buildup play. A forward like Adebayor will drop deeper and collect the ball from the midfielders with his back to goal, but then you lose the ability to be able to play through balls and passes to the striker from midfield.

I think Soldado could play as a deeper striker and get involved in the buildup, he has the technical ability to do that, but it would pretty much negate his biggest strength. What must happen is that the other pieces of the team form a chance creating machine. Soldado will put the chances away better than any striker in the league, I know that from having watched him at Valencia. Aside from maybe Robin Van Persie, I don't think there's a player in the league who is better at one touch finishes.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

give the fcuker a chance to adapt FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

Disappointed with him today

Should have scored a couple

But still think he will come good - give him time to adapt

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

I thought he done alright myself - he turned a couple of half chances in to serious attempts and was unlucky not to score. Definitley showed enough to make me think he'll do the business given time.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

I thought he was pretty good today tbh. He wasn't very good second half but first half he did well.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

I'm not writing him off at all but in a fair world Defoe would start next game.

well the world is not fair unfortunately

Lineker took 7 games to score his first goals for Spurs. Soldado has 2 pens already and will very soon score from open play. keep the faith

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

Btw, I wasn't criticising Soldado's performance.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

I just don't think he's built for the prem, if he had speed or size he would trouble defenders more, but nowadays defenders are all bigger and quicker than players of his ilk.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

I think Soldado is very unlucky not to have 4 or 5 goals by now, he will come good eventually. Just by watching his movement in the box you can see he has it.

Re: Soldado - Official! - Medical Completed!!

That chest control for his chance in the first half was outstanding. Should have got on the score sheet today though with some of the chances we were creating, and by the end of the game he looked visibly tired.

It's still early days, but from what I can see I reckon he'll end up being more like an upgraded version of Pavlyuchenko as opposed to a real world class Berbatov/Klinsmann type for us. I have no doubt that he will score goals, whether we'll get £26m worth from him is another matter entirely.
