Christian Benteke

How would bent fare in our team now? I'd recon he'd score quite a bit, but as usuall his ability to not contribute anything else would be lambasted on here I recon.

That scuff against Arsenal was his sliding doors moment, had he of put that away his Spurs career may have been so different.

What if he scores more next season?

lol then he will probably be out of reach.....well at least its resolved early so we can move on rather than this happening late august.

last post in this thread for me... for a while.....I am genuinely gutted but there you go.

none of us can make statements of how benteke will do next season with absolute clarity....however I can only see him developing into a better player but that's just me but because he isn't our player and will probably never will be now Im gonna move on ftom this and hope that we can sign a decent striker who will make the difference for us.

I have to echo that sentiment

Benteke, Agonlahor and Weimann......they now understand each other and are going to be difficult to stop this season.

Far from it: it shows him to be exceptionally single minded in a devious sort of way: prepared to do anything (including putting in a transfer request) in pursuit of his ultimate aim, which was to get a new contract. I don't think he ever wanted to join us, and had no use for us other than as an imaginary 'stalking horse' to force Villa into agreeing to his wage demands.

he wanted to join us imo, handed in the transfer request, gave Spurs and Villa 10 days to come to an agreement, but we didnt want to pay the fee and probably thought we had all summer to make Villa drop the price. He goes back to Villa, Lambert gets a chance to talk to him face to face, and Lambert convinces him to stay

snooze and you lose......happened with D Villa, and now with Benteke

Regarding David Villa, the guy *clearly* wanted to stay in Spain irrespective of the whole "oooh, I was all set to go to London but Spurs faffed about too much" thing he came out with after the fact. We had agreed a price with Barca - that much is on the record. And it now seems as though we had pretty much agreed personal terms too. Then at the 11th hour, a big Spanish team swooped in and he jumped at the chance. It would have made no difference if we'd done the negotiating a week, or a month, earlier. Atlético Madrid would have just come in a week, or a month, earlier too. If he was so keen on coming to London then why was his agent touting him around Spain during negotiations that were "almost complete".

With regards to Benteke, Aston Villa valued him at a higher amount than we did (or than we were prepared to pay). Just like us with Bale. Are you saying that we should just pay whatever amount Aston Villa plucked out of the air? Or that Levy should have been able to reduce the fee with a snap of his fingers? Or what? Villa had an obligation to meet *our* valuation? I don't get it. Just because *you* think Benteke - after one good season - is worth more than Jovetic or Negredo doesn't mean that Levy thinks that (or quite frankly most people).

I'd have loved to see Benteke at Spurs this season, but that price was absurd. And of course, it was Aston Villa's right to set a high value and stick to it (just like - I hope - we're doing with Bale).

It's incredibly unlikely.

After a standout season almost every single player regresses towards mean. I say almost because there are exceptions to the rule, like Ronaldo and hopefully Bale, but I don't think Benteke is of that high quality.

Then, in all likelihood, he'll have another standout season later in his career, then he'll regress towards mean again. It happens all over the world in almost every sport.

...same as the reasons underlying the curse of the dreaded Manager of the Month Award.

Benteke had a good season, i wouldnt say it was a standout one. He will have much better ones in his career imo which can then be classed as standout

i sincerely hope 17 mill pound Paulinho lives up to the hype......i mean we met that massive valuation for a midfielder who only a few years ago was playing in Poland and then the Brazilian 2nd division. isnt that valuation absurd???

i think the 25 mill pound valuation of Benteke was reasonable for us surely, 8 mill more than Paulinho but Benteke is a striker, younger and has a proven year in the PL. His wages would have fitted within our structure, the same cannot be said of Negredo and Jovetic.

Negredo is 28,so his wages, transfer fee, and age would have made him a non starter

Jovetic is younger, but add the transfer fee and wages and his desire for CL football and that made him unrealistic

apparently Benteke wanted to come to Spurs, handed in a transfer request, his wages were affordable, his agent said that his client liked the idea of european football, not an insistence on CL football, so all that was left was agreeing the 25 mill fee....imo Levy didnt expect Lambert to be so convincing in changing Benteke's mind when he had the first opportunity to do so. Like i said Levy probably thought he could play the long game and drag the drama out until Aug 31st. Who knows? Possible though

The Polish league is no worse than the Belgian league and that's where Benteke was two seasons ago. 25m was way too high for him.

what's important is where he's at now, and how he's performed for brazil. i still think we got a bargain there.

Andre Santos used to perform for Brazil only a couple of years ago, great Confed Cup in 2009, but look at him now after his spell at Arse

whaaaat? Andre Santos was the best left back in the premier league!

Only marginally better than this guy.
