Conor Gallagher

The price being mooted doesn't really leap out as something new on that front imv - in fact it seems to be a bit of a cut-price opportunistic bargain deal, something quite in line with how we operated previously.

Wages could tell a different story though

I think wages plus the fact that it’s a story of Villa maybe looking like more of a short term prospect given their form but Spurs looking like more of the long term bet with the extra muscle to get these things done. Eg we’re not trying an initial loan, we feel comfortable adding him to our wage bill. In isolation I agree it’s not massively different from other signings we’ve made, but in the context of getting him ahead of Villa I like what it says about our muscle and flexibility.

It was widely reported in the summer they are not exactly liquid and have a ridiculous wage to turnover ratio too

Yeah exactly. I’m not saying that we’ve pushed the boat out to sign a previously unobtainable player here. More that we’ve outcompeted a close rival who wants to take our place in the top echelon of the league consistently. I think that’s a good sign.

Loan vs transfer
More chance of playing first team football here in WC year

It's good that we have seemingly pipped Villa to the player, but the two factors above make the two clubs approaches somewhat different to the player.

But why a loan for Villa? That’s my point. They were likely hamstrung by PSR where as we weren’t.

Might (should?) allow us to play more of a high press - winning turnovers high up the pitch obviously key to that and something that Gallagher is strong at
Sarr and Bentancur are quite good at that too, not sure there will be a big difference in our pressing.

As per our previous conversation about Bentancur I think Gallagher is more secure in possession and while not a deep playmaker for me quite capable of some decent pass and move play - while being more secure. So maybe Frank gets someone he trusts to be a bit more progressive, while (safety first) being a hard working athleticly strong player who will defend well.

Overall I think he's better than Sarr and Bentancur. But he still leaves our midfield with a lot of similar-ish profiles, missing a deep playmaker/ball progression player and passer.

Incremental improvement I guess, a limited one, but still.

Seems a really good pro with good experience and some leadership about him, I guess we need that.

Hopefully not the last significant money spent this window of completed.

It was a loan with the obligation to buy - as we had done with Romero.

For Atletico, it would have been identical.... so hardly a reason.

Apparently Gallagher did not want to be a brummie....

But that's nothing new, is it?

I give up mate. Wasn’t expecting to have to defend an innocuous comment so much. No, maybe it is nothing new. But I’m glad that we have the muscle and flexibility that Villa don’t. And I think what is sort of new from this news is proof that even though Villa currently look like a much better footballing prospect than us, our weight actually still matters. It is nice to be reminded of that, and see it in action.
