Tbh if we are getting to this stage, I would rather we focus on developing the likes of Odobert/Tel and just make do until Kulu is back and/or the January window is open where we have done well in recent years.

Some of the suggestions on here are beginning to get like buying for the sake of it which we don't need to be doing and would regret in the longer term....
Personally I think Elliott would be good. Really good player.

Definitely agree with your point about not buying for the sake of it. Has to make sense as targets long term.

Particularly if Kulusevski will be out for quite a while, but even if it's not that long, I do think we really need another creative and ball progression force in the team.

I think its more the eye test. Paqueta just never impressed me whenever I've watched him. Whereas Eze was invariably a stand out talent on the pitch. With "data led" thats what it means. At the end of the day you use data to determine which players to go and watch. You still watch them to give you your final judgement.
Personally I think he's looked good whenever I've seen him (admittedly not a ton). Kudus too had poor periods playing in a dysfunctional West Ham team? Paqueta has also had that betting case hanging over him.

I said that about Kudus (that he hadn't impressed me on the few occasions i'd watched him for West Ham). We shall see with him - can he do it consistently across the season?

The difference with Kudus is that he is still fairly young (only just turned 25) and clearly has always had the physique and skill, but his end product hasn't been great hence his fairly poor goals/assists return. But is now at that age where you find that a lot of talented players end product improves.

Paqueta is 28, he isn't going to get much better or change his habits at this stage. He is a highlights reel player, and having many West Ham friends have watched a lot of their games and there are a few things you can guarantee about him - he will do a lovely piece of skill at some point, give away the ball at some point, and do a stupid challenge at some point. He is not the answer IMO....

Trust in the power of Thomas the Frank engine

Paqueta would be wearing sky blue if it wasn't for his inquiry... and I would much rather take Pep's evaluation of a player than any Wet Spammer... they also said Kudus was a waste of space when we signed him...

No West Ham fan I know said that about Kudus and if you just want to cherry pick what certain people say online that's up to you - and I'm using my own eyes, got nothing to do with their fans.

Time has moved on from when Pep wanted him, and I could provide plenty of examples of players he has signed and then swiftly looked to move on. I've watched him a lot, considering how many AMs we have gone for if he was that desired by us we could have got him by now looking at the money we are willing to blow elsewhere in that position. He would likely be seen by us as nothing more than a short term fix, hence why likely we would keep our powder dry for someone like him over a Paz or MGW who would be for the longer term....

I doubt we have £130m to spend. Looking at what we have spent in total over last few summers and what we have spent so far this summer I think we will sign at most one more player. Possibly no more players as we have generally made max two "first team" signings on significant wages every summer and we have already done that so far in Kudus and Paulinha.
The one thing we've not been talking about is sales, that can provide money for the pot. BUT the reason we haven't been talking about it, is who the fudge might we sell? No-one is selling Richie now. Maybe Biss? but if the injury is genuine.

Outgoings are all loans by the look of it

We sold son, hojbjerg got some money from the edwards transfer aswell and maybe a couple of quid from madueke.

The team with Gil (Girona?) wants to sign him permanently apparently.

Solomon? I don't get why Leeds isn't back in for him.

Scarlett perhaps, if someone wants him.

I have no doubt that MGW or Eze would have been preferable but they didn;t come for well documented reason and I guess you agree that we need an attacking CM. And... seeing as we went for a 27 year old, not sure I share your "keeping the power dry for the longer term" opinion.

However... to say that "time has moved on from when Pep wanted him" - i.e. last year - seems a bit gymnastic to me. Also happy to know which "players he has signed and then swiftly looked to move on" cause I cannot see them from where I am standing... but then maybe my glasses need cleaning.

Maybe leeds have come in for solomon and we told them we want to get another player in first.
We've had son and moore go out. With injuries to kulu and mads. Solomon going aswell leaves us short.

Yes and Eze has scored 8 goals, 11 goals and 10 goals in the league last 3 years along with 16 assists, Paqueta has scored 4 goals in each of those 3 seasons with a total of 9 assists so it's fair to say Eze is a step up - and if there was a stat for fudge ups that lead to big chance for opposition Paqueta would lead that one in addition.

Ok let me dress it up another way to be clearer, saying 'Pep was prepared to sign this player' as some sort of validation that said player is great doesn't compute. Signing Grealish for 100m is the obvious one (a player I like but never ever in that category) but then you could look back at how he spent well over 100m on full backs, realised they were no good and then spent a further ridiculous amount to replace them. They spend plenty of money on players who are hit and miss, because they can afford to. Had Paqueta not worked out it wouldn't of made much difference to them, they have players in his position and can buy and sell as we please.

He's not a playmaker, isn't that efficient in the final third and not a significant upgrade on Kulu/Maddison when fit so there is no point dropping significant money on him. If you disagree then fine, I'm not that bothered about him and if Frank wants him then great.

But as fair as I'm concerned there will be better options who fit the desired profile better, if we have to wait until the next window or two for that then so be it...
