Yes because we can't buy the very top of the pile in terms of of PL players. They either already play for one of the top teams or when they prove themselves able to, one of our rivals who have bigger wallets and bigger ambitions go for them.
I find the idea of prioritising PL targets to be a fairly limiting pool of players to pull from. If we can't sign an Isak and are limited to the Richarlison's and Solanke's tbh then I don't think it's a good long term strategy.

Maddison, Richarlison, Johnson, Bissouma even Solanke to an extent (although I do think he's decent). None are top players and none have exceptionally high ceilings.

Prem teams don't need to sell as they have a lot of money. So you have to pay big money for them. We'd get better value buying from europe.

As long as the scouting is spot-on. We have made as many average European-based signings, if not more. Njie, NKoudou, Stambouli, Janssen, Gil, Ndombele, Lo Celso, those are just a few.
Prem teams might have to sell for PSR reasons, so there will be opportunities.

I think that's a great list to highlight how we buy good but not great title-winning players (makes what we did last season all the more incongruous TBH)...I actually think Johnson has a higher ceiling than the others in terms of being a finisher/I still think he could play the 'Dele ghosting' role really well as his ability to arrive in the box at the right time plus his finishing are both there. Maddison was the move we made when we really should've got Eze first time IMO (Maddison is good when fit but I don't see him playing more than 30 games next season). Biss I still don't fully trust albeit he has upped his game yet still does silly things. I think Dom is a 45 million player we paid 60 for and who is a 90k a week forward, which tells you everything; he's good, I appreciate him, he's hard-working, but he will not destroy penalty areas like an Oshimon does...
I am warming to the McAtee suggestions (@Gutter Boy has certainly placed convincing arguments) and am finding myself OK with the idea of Harvey Elliot too. I cannot gauge if this is because I am genuinely onboard or am now getting concerned we'll find nothing but tumbleweeds in the transfer corridor at this point.
All those players were bought precovid. Since covid most european teams are struggling financially.
As for psr. They'd just follow chelseas lead. Everton now selling their womens team.
Mcatee might be good value. Maybe another cole palmer. No idea.
But on the whole think you'll get better value buying from europe than the prem.

Cannot disagree, again I think we still have to ultimately be smart in the type of player we recruit generally (which is of course common sense!)...it's that balance between a player whose Prem credentials you've seen versus a talent whose Prem credentials have not been seen/tested.
The problem is those players were all bought at their ceiling/peak age. Thats a failure on the scouting/strategy.
If you want to buy from prem you really need to grab players that are a bit younger and on an upward curve (tier 2 if you like as tier 1 like Isak aren’t coming to us).
Kudus and MGW more the profile. Elliott, Branthwaite, Mcatee. Kerzez was one. Similar to when we could have got Grealish years back. He went up another level before dropping off.
Bowen and Mbuemo are probably at ceiling but that ceiling is great.

These are great discussions IMO; they challenge some deeper thought on certain targets. Eze, for example, is probably right about at his peak and he would be a good pickup for us. I wanted him two seasons ago. Having said that, and taking onboard yours, Libs, and Bishop's input, there's a very comprehensive argument for not spending that amount of money on Eze at this moment.
Side question. If there was one player you'd spend silly money on, either via wages/transfer fee or a combo of both, who would it be? Let's assume this 'dream signing' would be with us three years max? I increasingly find myself 'allured' by Oshimon, who must have some sort of personality weirdness because for the life of me, I cannot understand why a top club in need of goals don't pay the bloke??? I suppose he'd blow the dressing rom apart, but why do I even assume that? is there actual precedent for that assumption???

For me 1) would be Osimhen and 2) would be Isak. I think they'd both have Kane like abilities to lift the whole team to another level, in a way no other signing I could think of would. They are different players - Osimhen is a pure goal machine, whereas Isak is the complete CF. But either would be a complete game changer.

Isak would probably be more long-term?
Osimhen would be incredible for two seasons before likely looking to go elsewhere, but I agree, he is an absolute goal machine who would be a game changer for us in so many ways...

He only has a year left on his contract and doesn't want to sign a new one due to lack of playing time. Guardiola knows that he will be unlikely to play many games for them next season due to their abundance of quality so selling him now is the right thing to do.
Potential issue I can see is that I suspect Emirates Marketing Project will want to insert a buy-back as part of the deal. I doubt we would agree to that, whereas a club like Nottingham Forest may well do.

I think Maddison is underrated by a number of Spurs fans. I think he has been a big success for us. I'd say that Johnson has also been a big success for us. Solanke did pretty well, playing a difficult role. Bissouma and Richarlison have been somewhat disappointing but not terrible.... With Richarlison's main issue being how many matches he has missed.

Joshua Kimmich. Would be transformational for our team IMO. If I were Frank I would be in Levy/Lange's ear constantly telling them how paying £350,000 or even £400,000 a week for him on a free transfer would represent great value for Spurs.
