Redknapp

Harry Redknapp does not believe a club should allow a manager's contract to run into its final year if they rate him highly, but is happy for Tottenham to make a decision on his future.

Redknapp has just 12 months remaining on his current deal, having enjoyed a successful stint at the helm since arriving at White Hart Lane in 2008.

He is keen to sign an extension but reports have suggested chairman Daniel Levy is less enthusiastic about handing him a new long-term agreement.

Redknapp maintains he has a good relationship with Levy and is staying relaxed as he waits to discover whether Spurs want to keep him.

"People talk about it but I've never had a problem with Daniel Levy," Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

"The simple situation is that I have a year left on my contract and it is up to Tottenham whether they want to extend that or not.

"Things couldn't have gone better since I've been there. We've finished fourth twice, fifth once, quarter-finals of the Champions League and played fantastic football.
"It's a good club and I enjoy being at Tottenham."

Situation

Redknapp feels it is a dangerous tactic to let a contract draw towards its expiry date before taking action, even if he says he has not thought about looking elsewhere.

"It's not a case of me looking for security," he explained.

"What it's about, really, is that when players know they have only a year left on their contract it doesn't work.

"You don't let players run into the last year of their contract if you think they are any good and you don't let managers run into the last year of their contract if you think they are any good.
"That is the situation so it is up to the club."

Qatar

Redknapp insists he has not heard of any interest in him from other clubs, having been linked with the Chelsea job as well as a move to Qatar.

He said: "No. I don't speak to anybody else, it's not my job. I am under contract at Tottenham.

"I keep seeing something about Qatar but I've never been to Qatar in my life.

"I love it at Tottenham. I've got a good team and good players.

"It is up to the chairman. If he doesn't want to give me another contract, it is his decision.

"We'll see what happens."

The but I really dont like is "What it's about, really, is that when players know they have only a year left on their contract it doesn't work."

He's essentially saying that players perform poorly and put their feet up when they have a year left on their contract....and then saying that a manager would do the same ie his message to Levy is "if I dont get a longer deal then I wont be giving 100%"

Levy therefore either needs to give him a 3 year deal (NOT what I would given Harry's volatility) or sack him.

I would sack him and bring in AVB asap

How come both Redknapp and the players claim the England speculation didn't affect them in any way, but having only one year left on his contract will?

In horror?

Who are you Julian Clary?

FFS, he's asked a question and has given a balanced and honest answer, Levy's mother popping her clogs doesn't make any feckin difference to what he said.

Some of you guys need to get real.

Mick, don't start on at me. I'm one of Harry's biggest fans, been defending him stoutly all the way through this thread and would be devastated if he left, but that's the reason I was horrified, watching him essentially putting his boss on the spot in front of the media like that.

I sincerely hope Levy sees it the way you saw it, but to my mind it was at best unwise and at worst, well, let's say asking for trouble.

wow Paul Stretford is in town....Redknapp means business, he's rolling out the big guns to take on Levy

prepare for a summer of flimflame

he says whatever he wants to suit his purposes.....clever bloke

Is that all they asked him?

Could have been pre-meditated. He could have asked his buddies to raise the contract issue and put pressure on Levy

Of course he arranged it! Why else would they be calling him in early June when there is zero news about it. the way he uses the media like this is my number 1 problem with him

Harry Redknapp has armed himself with Wayne Rooney's agent as he enters a crucial period in his negotiations over his Tottenham future.

Spurs are refusing to rush discussions with their manager, who is entering the final year of his deal at White Hart Lane, but will meet with Paul Stretford this week.

Stretford, who is renowned as a hard negotiator, was a major influence in Rooney's battle with United in 2010 when the striker handed in a transfer request.

The relationship between Redknapp and chairman Daniel Levy is said to have been soured by the links to the England vacancy towards the end of last season and TottenhamÔÇÖs subsequent slump that saw them lose out to rivals Arsenal in the fight for a Champions League place.

And with Redknapp now 65 years old, some of those on the Tottenham board believe it is worthwhile looking beyond the end of next season.

Redknapp returned from holiday in Dubai seeking assurances the Spurs board will back him in the transfer market this summer after he was linked with the Liverpool job, a position which was subsequently filled by Brendan Rodgers.

He has also been linked with a lucrative move to the Middle East with a consortium believed to be putting together a financial package to try and tempt him to a job in Qatar.

The Spurs boss was sounded out by a club in the Middle East last year, and it is believed they have come back in for him as they feel they may now be able to lure him away from Spurs.

Redknapp's future is also linked closely to that of star players Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, both of whom will be discussed at meetings this week.

What a waste of money. What negotiations are there ? Last year of contract Harry, complete it then fudge off or think about someone else apart from yourself for a change and fudge off now.

So Levy is in the US burying his mum and Redknapp come on tv talking about a new contract, he is all about himself, complete tool, time for you to go Harry im afraid..

Because it suits him. The way he comes out with sort of crap is exactly the reason not to give him a long contract - you can guarantee that there'll be a reason in the next 3 years to fire him

What a selfish little man - always about himselt and his own little agenda.

I sincerely hope Levy tells him to jog on now - very disappointing interview all round

It's easy to want Redknapp sacked because it's sexy and exciting and means lots of players in and out. All that drama is great fun.

But you know, Ardiles, Hoddle, Graham, Gross, Francis, Santini, Ramos...great ideas and fun plans don't always work out.

If Levy were a contrarian investor, he'd back Redknapp now with a 3 year deal and bumper funds. In the process he'd, by definition, guarantee Spurs avoid another Ramos, he'd show the players and fans where they stand, and the club would still have a pretty good chance of cracking Top 3 given the past few years performance.

That's the ballsy move now, despite also being the likely percentage play.

There is absolutely zero factual proof our next appointment would be a 'Ramos'. Living in that constant fear is not the right approach imv

Levy should not be held ransom and bullied by a man who s shown questionable loyalty to some of his previous employers and has now come crawling back once his little England exit strategy back fired

Good post and I agree.

I also agree with those that are tiring of some of the things Redknapp is saying to the press. I try to ignore it and have stopped reading his interviews unless there is something about a transfer where he's often quite honest and obvious.

See this is one of those things that riles me up with Redknapp. Now it's "dangerous" to let a manager's contract run down to just one year, but in February/March/April he was adamant that the England talk wasn't affecting the players. He mocked the idea at that time, saying it's not like the players just stop performing because the manager might be leaving.

Also ""Things couldn't have gone better since I've been there. We've finished fourth twice, fifth once, quarter-finals of the Champions League and played fantastic football." They could have gone better, for instance by beating Aston Villa and finishing 3rd this season.

Levy has to consider who a potential replacement would be before rushing in and sacking him. I think he's very much a man that considers all options before making decisions.

How can you ignore what one of men who represents our club says?

Or what he thinks about our future? Tottenham would still be here after he s gone

Or is it because it becomes convinient that way since it suits the argument?

This is the thing, grass always seems greener. Redknapp guarantees we will be challenging top 4 each season, some seem to take this for granted. My first choice replacement would be AVB but even then I wouldn't be overly confident of success. For all we know he (or any other manager) could cause a decline in performance the way he did for Chelsea....
