Toby Alderweireld

Remember it could be us delaying the contract until the new tv deal is agreed. It looks like the EPL are in trouble, as they've not had the bids/bidders they wanted.

That will really determine wage levels over the next 3-4 years and beyond

Agreed on the tv deals, could well be waiting for that. Other than that it's just rumours that talks have broken down.

Didn't they announce a six week delay this week, so they go back out to try and drum up more interest? The end of March wouldn't be too bad for us - get it sorted before the WC anyway

I think we'd be crazy to let him go to a PL rival. That would be 2 players gone to rivals 2 summers in a row.

Tonight we are playing a team who lost their best defender in Bonucci last summer - someone probably better than Toby, if we are honest. They went and got two replacements in Howedes and Benatia; and just got on with continuing at the same level they were.

That is what we need to aspire to because - unless we sell our soul to a Middle Eastern sheik, we will always find it difficult to compete with the salaries of the likes of the Manchester clubs...

Forget all the press title tattle, I'm talking money, contracts and timing.

1 Levy will not let any player run their contract down
2 Levy will maximize the value of any want away player.
3 Toby has a £25m bye out which kicks-in in 10 months.

forget all the gossip!
Levy will get it sorted one way or another. We all know that AND sooner than later.

Also bear in mind the wise old sports management maxim: Better to move a player a year too soon than a year too late.

The new stadium will make us a lot more competitive in wages. There is also the preference of playing and living in London.

Am reeeeeeeeeally confused as to why this thread has gone on the turn of basically assuming Toby is gone.

How do people think the 2 hour conversation with Poch and Perez went? Like it went so badly that the contract decision was taken there and then?

'Toby, you know we love you and value you, but this is a crucial time of the season for us, the games are intense and are demands our higher because this is when we really kick into gear. A hamstring injury is notorious for causing set backs and we don't want to risk you in any way'

'I appreciate that guys, but I feel like I'm fit. I've worked really hard to get back fit so I could play in these big games'.

'I know you did Toby, but as I said, the demands are higher at this stage of the season and the risks are too great. We need you for the run-in and we want to protect your career'.

'I don't agree, I think I'm fit'

'You're fit enough to play in the FA Cup, we will use that to get you up to speed for the remaining PL and CL games'.

'No, this is an insult. I'm not signing a new contract if this is how you are going to treat me'.

'oooooooooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk'

I really think he'll sign a new deal and Levy will pay the man what he is worth, which is as one of the best CBs in the world, he will be earning slightly less than Kane. But contracts will go up this summer and I don't see that Toby has a massive incentive to leave. And even if he did, it's not because Poch has left him out of these games FFS!!!!

It’s a good point and it should put the club in a strong position. Very hard though if united offer him a million a month or thereabouts, who wouldn’t agitate for a move when such sums are involved?

Is any team in the business of offering 250k a week to a central defender? Genuinely curious. I can't imagine Jones and Smalling are on anywhere near as much, nor Stones and Laporte. Kompany I'd imagine is pushing 150/170. I reckon we'd get Toby to near enough that with an offer.

£150/170pw Would be the sort of money might not even be paying Harry 'yet'.

It's all bloody guesswork!

I think we'll pay Kane 200k p/w from when we get into the new stadium. I think we'll offer Toby at least 150k if not more in his new contract.

At his age, he's probably got one opportunity left for the big money move and it wouldn't surprise me if his injury has served to focus his mind on how easily that could all go up in smoke. It's my belief he's asked to be let go in the summer.

Why can't we be the big money move? I'm pretty sure we aren't going to be operating at the 100k ceiling any more after the summer.

Stick alder into our side tonight I doubt we would have been as naive defensively.

Can't afford to let him go to anyone else in the premiership
