Toby Alderweireld

Making a record signing for a young CB when we already had Toby and Verts, with Dier able to slot in, was a bit surprising.

Was it? We had two first choice CBs, Foyth was completely unproven and Dier needed to some extent in CM. Kind of like having 2 full-timers and 2 halfs. Adding at least one decent CB was essential and given our general approach to transfers, it was always more likely to be an up and coming semi-proven (ie in a tier 2 league) CB

Signing another CB was not surprising. Making our record signing at any position for a defender, when we had the best defensive pair in the league, is what was surprising.

I certainly didn't see any speculation about us smashing our transfer record for a young defender.

Agreed. Sanchez replaced Wimmer in the squad. A bit surprising signing Foyth, but he stepped into CCV's squad role I think.

A bit surprising that we spent that much on a player like Sanchez for that role. But I think that was more down to his quality and other cheaper options not being rated highly enough.

Even if Levy did consider the idea of selling to them, why would TA go there? He's one of the best CB's in the world and could probably play for any club he wanted to. Plus he could get a brickload more money from at least 5 other clubs in Europe.

Thats all true, but it was true for Campbell too...

Sanchez has pace as well, so despite his comparative strengths in other areas compared to Verts and Toby he brings something important to a partnership.

Arsenal were one of the best teams in Europe at that time. Wenger should have definitely won the Champions League with that team during the early 2000s. Even when they get into the CL, they never threaten to get past the last 16 these days.

There were also no Emirates Marketing Project, PSG etc with unlimited resources in Campbell's prime.

Also Campbell is as thick as dog brick and would not play well abroad, no way could he learn another language, English players tend not to do well abroad. Even read that Bale can still not speak Spanish.

If toby wants out I hope he goes to Madrid and not a league rival, 40m+ and we go back to Ajax for De Ligt and Van De Beek.

There is no way, absolutely no way, that Levy allows him to go to Arsenal after what happened with C*ntball in 2001. As much as Levy loves a deal, I’d imagine he’d sell Toby to anyone else for a much lower price than do business with that lot.

Gooner ITKs are a desperate bunch these days and are just trying to wind Spurs fans up with utter hogwash.

It is nice to know that even though he may be the best central defender in the league we are relatively okay without him and if he does leave we will be okay. Sanchesz is just 21 and will become one of the best defenders in world football as he matures

This is all entirely hypothetical. We might as well be discussing what our stadium options and red lines would be if Levy entertained a serious offer to convert NWHL into a roller disco.

And this is exactly why i wish Poch would've played it differently with that journo! His response has sparked a story that, whilst it may not have any merit, now has the media talking about Toby's contract rather than his fitness. This in turn sparks further rumours of interest from other clubs, which then can begin to turn a players head.

Of course i realise that between the actual player, his agent, THFC and other clubs' representatives they're probably all used to this kind of trollop and can weed out the truth in any rumours. But it certainly doesn't help settle matters, i'm sure of that!!

I think he's a few years off that scrapheap yet

I agree but we will never get more money for him than we will this summer.

One of the next interesting challenges for Poch is how he refreshes and renews the team. Most managers never manage to build more than one successful team at a club. When we choose to let players go will be really interesting.
