Toby Alderweireld

Some cryptic comments in a mixture of English and Spanish from Pochettino in his post-match presser. Reading between the lines, you might get the idea there's been a few tears before bedtime. If TA is creating waves over not walking back into the team, I don't suppose there'll be generous odds available about his being the next one out the door in the summer.

With Pochettino’s sharp reaction to the question about Alderweireld, it’s not looking good. If Alderweireld isn’t on the bench against Juventus, I think we can presume his future lays away from White Hart Lane. I wonder if the debate isn’t contractual issues which are yet to be resolved, and discussions behind the scenes which suggest that Alderweireld is looking for a way out. Might also explain why he took so long to come back from injury if there were issues away from the pitch. Although, I think that’s taking it too far given that he would surely have started training as soon as fit regardless of his future at the club.

I think you are presuming far too much. Alderweireld has been out injured for a long while and his comeback will be managed carefully, a home Cup against against Newport where we are likely to have to do very little defending, is very different from a game against Arsenal or a game away to Juventus.

I hope you are right, but why wasn’t he on the bench?

Poch knows why and looking at the result does it matter.

I get that he is an awesome player for us and I would start to worry if he doesn't make it for the juve game.

However he may have needed more rest coming back from injury.

Personally I think that rose and aurier along with alder will play vs juventus.

Counter attacking with pace from the width.

He’s played one game, 3 days days before the Derby, in 3 months.

Absolutely no need to rush him back with the form of Verts and Sanchez. Toby also is really the impact sub type, plus we tend not to throw an extra CB when defending a lead.

Look at Rose - he came back, played, then had another short spell out.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if he’s not involved against Juve. It wouldn’t necessarily mean there’s an issue with him staying if he’s not picked.

I think we need to chill in this.

I overheard a conversation yesterday where someone was saying the club had arranged an U23s game yesterday specifically for Toby. Presumably if true it was behind closed doors. Anyone heard anything of that?

Not heard anything on that myself but would be surprised as the U23s play tomorrow night against West Ham. Plus I can only think of two examples in the four years that Poch has been here where he's used an U23 game to give a returning first teamer some minutes.

It can be spun that way but ultimately if he wasnt ready to play v Arsenal he certainly won't be thrown back in in a game like this

What happens if you dont take him and Sanchez or Vertonghen go down ill on the morning of the match? WOuldnt you want TA there? Otherwise we'd start Dier and Sanchez (say) with no cover apart from Davies....against Juventus...
