Franco Baldini

I think i saw him referenced to as Head of Player Recruitment - sounds like a DoF type to me.

Looks like he has done a good job at Southampton the past few years if so - the foreign players he has signed seem to have adapted to the league well and to their managers needs.

Unless he has any specific ties to Saints then id assume he'd see us as a step up - more money available/atteact a higher calibre of player.

In that case, I would be all for it. It would get rid of Baldini for one. And hopefully it would mean they would work well together and Poch wouldn't end up with players he didn't want like we have seen in the past.

But he wasn't solely at fault for the poor start to the 2008-09 season. How about Levy waiting till the last seconds of the transfer window to sell Berbatov and thus leaving no time to spend the proceeds from the sale. Does Ramos not shoulder any blame for his strange tactics, team selections, poor motivation of the players?

These discussions always make me laugh as at Spurs we operate a transfer committee always have done under Levy. Its not the DOF or manager that has sole responsibility for signings so it was never all Comollis fault or all Baldini's fault:

Ramos should have had a conversation with Comolli about the squad identified the weaknesses and sorted them out together. We knew Berbatov would likely go that summer it appears Pavlyuchenko was the identified replacement. It was Keanes late back stabbery that buggered us royally as we hadn't planned for it. Keane was a very similar player to Arshavin it was probably felt Pav would gel well with home in terms of style of play.

My big question with Ramos/Comolli was the failure to identify the need for a tough ball winner in midfield to counter balance all the attacking midfielders we had collected like Bentley, Boateng, Dos Santos etc.

We never targeted one so I can only assume Ramos didn't feel he needed one. Redknapp saw the weakness straight away and got in Palacios immediately.

Similarly, it wasn't just Baldini who signed the 7 players last summer it was AVB, Baldini, Levy and whoever agreeing the targets

AVB certainly didn't 'agree' with a whole lot of the targets we eventually pursued, so while you may be correct that we operate with a transfer committee, it never has and never will imply that Levy and his yes-man DoF won't just steam-roller over the manager when proposing and agreeing on targets for transfer windows.

Er....how do you know AVB didn't agree to the targets? I'd say it would be an incredulous decision to invest the amount of money we did in those players if we thought the head coach wasn't happy with them.

Levy is a money man he knows if the players aren't playing and the team isn't successful he's losing money. There is NO WAY he'd give the go ahead to sign a player without the managers buy-in. He might suggest players, Redknapp said it was Levy who brought Van Der Vaart to the table but he will not sign them if the coach doesn't want them that would be totally bizarre.

Anyway the players bought were all very much AVB players, functional, tactical players. Paulinho said he was AVB's pick, AVB fought for him to be bought. The only question marks IMO are over Eriksen and Lamela as I think he wanted Willian and Hulk but was offered those two when it became clear the other two were ungettable or had bern poached by Chelsea. He grudgingly accepted but then didn't play either regularly.

That was my first clue. Well, that and the mass of other stories that came out immediately afterwards that said the same thing, Jason Burt exclusives included.

Levy loses almost no money when he makes bad decisions, because he's put in relatively little money in the first place. So that really isn't as big a motivation for Levy making good decisions as you might think. Ultimately, his gamble (and Lewis' gamble) is that their eventual sale of this club will net them multiples of what they originally spent to buy this club, with as little invested to achieve that profitable outcome as they can get away with. Almost all of the day-to-day expenditures come straight from income. So there isn't a lot at stake for them when they do get the occasional decision badly wrong.

Don't get me wrong, Levy isn't actively malevolent or disinterested (or even extremely incompetent) when it comes to decision-making: however much I dislike the way he runs the club now, I'll take him at his word when he says he's a fan like us and that this (combined with the obvious chase for the highest possible sale price) makes him more circumspect when making decisions that he otherwise would be. But do not presume that he gives a single **** about supporting or backing our managers: they're ultimately quite disposable in the overall scheme of things, and that's a shame because it will be what prevents us from ever breaking that ceiling we constantly bump into while ENIC are around.

I still don't believe that AVB didn't agree to the players being signed. Reason being is we operate a transfer committee.

I think it boils down to the fact that AVB got the hump because we couldn't get any of his no. 1 wishlist targets. Which when you consider how expensive they were and who else was interested in them, isn't surprising. Yeah, he was probably hacked off we couldn't sign Oscar, Hulk, Moutinho, Willian. Unfortunately for both him and us, none of those players were easy for a club like us to acquire.

On the other hand if it's not on his no.1 wishlist targets why buy ? Instead of 7 new players maybe we should've gone for just two big names...I can certainly see that's AVB's approach, did you really think he wanted 7 new players to replace 1 of bale?

I think that is the key learning from the Bale situation that we need to remember if we ever end up in it again. Liverpool are feeling the same pain this season.

Lose an 80 million pound player, replace him with two 40 million pound established players rather than 7 un-proven youngsters.

Here's a video about him (from about 6.20 for 4 mins):

And an article: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/11582234.display/

It looks like he has quite a technical/analytical role, so I guess he'd come in beneath/supporting Baldini and Broomfield, rather than a replacement for either.

It also seems his science is applied to internal talent as well, so presumably there'd be overlap with McDermott and the academy too.

I think it's way too early to come down on Baldini, but I'm all for bringing in people with ability.

Chances are he would be coming in at least partly because he's been recommended by Poch if we do sign him. Good results from the outside, supported by someone who knows him from the inside. gogogo

If this means Baldini is sacked i'm all for it.

I think it more means he's being backed by being able to recruit competent staff to work underneath him.

Baldini has only been in the job 17 months, and by pretty much all accounts he inherited a void where Redknapp's 'friends and family speed dial' had squeezed out any form of scientific recruitment and selection infrastructure.

Baldini has got the track record (success as DoF at Roma and Madrid, plus 4 years learning the English game as England Assistant Manager) to warrant letting him put his own team in place.

Yeah - it's a big statement from Levy that he's backing Poch as well as Baldini.

What exactly are you talking about? do you literally just sit there and try and attach blame to Redknapp and/or Sherwood for everything bad?

That for 4 years Redknapp was principally interested in signing players who had played for him before (Parker, Crouch, Defoe, Krancjar, Kaboul), or who were mates with Frank Lampard (Gudjohnsen, Gallas). That doesn't require much of a scouting network or scientific selection processes like 'the black box'.

Comolli was saying last week how the scouting network he and Arnesen had created had just dissipated since 2008. Baldini is obviously trying to put something back together again, as shown by the recruitment of Broomfield and now this guy.

The one thing no one can credit Redknapp with was a long term approach. Not investing in the future especially around 2010-12 is the reason we are having to rebuild largely from scratch now.

Redknapp's non "scientific recruitment" got us playing the best brand of football and got us our best league finishes so it may not be the recruitment you like but it's got us the most success.

Badini's 'scientic recruitment' has so far got us:

1) A 26m pound striker that has managed to score 2 open play goals in nearly 1 and a half seasons.
2) A defender that can't defend
3) A Brazilian CM that can't even make the bench and is nothing short of turbo ****.
4) A Defensive midfielder that can't hold his position.
5) A 30m pound attacking midfielder that still hasn't scored a single goal in the league.

All the above has cost us in the region of 90m. That's what 'scientific approach' has got us.
