its a very interesting debate on the rise of football in the US, listening to sports talk radio friday morning, it was all about the NBA draft and a bit of "did you catch the soccer game" ? The trouble with yanks is they love their own sports, the NFL and college "football" have TV contracts that would make arab sheiks blush. A lot of americans just dont "get" the rules, they hate "flopping" (diving), the fact the clock doesnt stop when the ball goes out of play and ties (they dont understand what a draw is). A lot of people didnt understand how you could lose a game and then qualify for the next round.
If America wants to win a world cup, it has the resources to do it, but I get the feeling that the majority would rather see the cowboys play the giants and call themselves world champions when they win the superbowl.

cowboys can't play the giants in the Super Bowl ;-)

Ridiculous piece.
ann coulter who wrote that is a certifiable extreme right wing nut job, she has created a platform for herself for attacking anything "liberal" or remotely unrepublican

thanks galeforce, same conference

my missus says the same thing but thats because this country is so polarised now, you're either blue or red, coulter's books always make besteller's lists, fox news gets twice the ratings of msnbc and cnn combined

I'm one of those that's smart enough to be neither red or blue. The two party system is fvcked and corrupt. I'm a registered independent.

Her books make best sellers, and the cable news broadcasts get ratings, the same reason train and car wrecks draw a crowd... Most can't help but look

A lot of people didnt understand how you could lose a game and then qualify for the next round.

We have CNBC on during the day in the office and the wig-wearing Joe Everyman anchor was mystified as well by this concept of qualifying for the next round even though the USA lost its last match.

I assumed he was fulfilling a role of being the average guy because it is not a concept that should be alien to NFL fans; e.g. if Cincinnati win their last game they are through, but if they lose it they have to rely on Cleveland beating Pittsburgh and San Diego losing to Denver, in which case the Bengals would go through because they have a better divisional record than the Steelers and because they beat the Chargers in their head-to-head game.

Easy.

If it was easier to draw games in the NFL, these amazingly complicated tie-breakers would be required less often.

Anyway, in the USA, it is like Willie Dixon said: The men don't know, but the little girls understand.

Do they do draws in the MLS? Or is it like one of those run up from the half way line endings?

Americans hate draws, sorry ties, they have to have a winner, in the first few seasons of the MLS, every drawn game went to a penalty shootout, mercifully they dont do that anymore. If an ice hockey game is drawn, it goes to 5 mins of 4 v 4 OT and then a shootout. This is one of my fave questions to ask the natives when i'm in bars here and I regularly hear "its Unamerican to tie, whats the point playing if there's no winner etc". Then, they'll tell you all europeans are socialists despite having no grasp of the meaning of the term.

Boateng complaining about everything surrounding the Ghana team. Players had to fly economy from Miami to Brazil, while the football president and his family were in business class. The hotel was crappy, etc. etc.
