What are we missing?

Also, think back to the pieces of that peak Poch squad of 16-17 and how long they took to assemble.

Rose 2007
Walker - 2011
Lloris - 2012
Verts - 2012
Dembele - 2012
Eriksen - 2013
Toby - 2015
Son - 2015
Dele - 2015
Wanyama - 2016

And Kane came through the academy. So, ignoring Rose as a bit of a one-off, it took us 5 years to build the squad that swept foes aside in 2016-2017.

Now, that is because we spent slowly and cautiously throughout on account of our 'zero net spend' strategy. Maybe we can be a bit quicker now we don't adhere to that anymore.

But it will take a while before, by the grace of GHod, we never have to see Dier, Davies or Royal in a Spurs shirt again.

How did we do under Pochettino with two starting attackers out injured and the next in line backup injured and our best CB out injured?

Spence - starting to look like a cheapo club signing over a player Conte wanted or even signed off on (which, to be clear, he wasn't shy about announcing from day one).

I suspect he's the victim in Conte's play to make it clear to Levy he *does not want* that sort of trash. Buy him ready-made players, not kids. and to prove the point he's going to ignore Spence and play the irredeemable Emerson over and over, to prove to Levy and co., 'this is what your inaction in the market made me do'.

We have gaping holes in the team because it is a badly-built team, and two windows isn't going to fix it. No other top six club starts Dier, Davies or Emerson, but we rely on all three. No top six club has an unfixable bombscare like Sanchez near the 25-man squad, but here he's the immediate backup to Romero.

You can turn a squad around in one to two windows if you spend a lot of money and buy whom the manager wants. We sort of got halfway there, but cheaped out midway through. As a result, we have one of the best forward lines in the league with Kulu, Kane, Richy and Son, but a mediocre midfield and an atrocious backline.

It'll take a few more windows at the rate we're going, imo. The money we dropped on Richy has to be dropped every window (50m+ on one player), and it has to be spent on the following players in order of priority -

1. A top-class RB (Pedro Porro, maybe?) to replace Emerson.
2. A top-class 'organizer' CCB (Skriniar or someone) to replace Dier.
3. A top-class, penetrative attacking midfielder, to both rotate with Kulu and offer our one-paced midfield a press-resistant passing option; and
4. A replacement for Hugo.

Since we don't seem to want to drop 50m on one player more than once per window, it has to happen over 3-4 windows, i.e, we can have a 'complete' squad by summer 2024.

Which is when Kane's contract ends, incidentally, as well as Conte's if we trigger his one-year extension - so somewhere in there we have to tie them down too.

Not sure we need £50m solutions. Bentancur has been excellent. Perisic (imo) very good. Lenglet very much capable even early days.

The right signings don't have to be that expensive, but we have to get them right.

I'm quite optimistic that what is needed for the starting 11 really isn't that much, 2-3 players depending on how one see things. We have cover for more roles now than we had before. Another 2-3 good options.

I think it's doable in two windows if Paratici continues with a good hit rate. If he can identify style solutions that aren't that expensive freeing up money for one or two solutions that are more expensive we could get a lot better rather quickly.

Our strongest 11 looked excellent in the final couple of months last season. We've seen the same 11 players all too rarely this season.

We need players who are comfortable on the ball. Who don't take 3 touches to get it moving. Players who can pass between the lines, players who can see passes beyond the literal 2 yard pass and importantly can execute them.

We have far too many guys in our first 11 whose first touch is a bounce and their second touch is still trying to reign the ball in. Those vital seconds are what kill the momentum.

Improve the quality of the players with the ball and the results will follow.

We have no specialist passer in midfield, not even an option off the bench. No other top 6 team lacks in this area. Even some teams outside the top 6 have this player type.

I’m less concerned about the passer in midfield because of the system but everyone needs to be able to do the passing basics. We have glaring issues there

I guessed who wrote this before I checked (the voice of reason I’ll call you now)
Your right too
In the car yesterday I joked with my mate to look at arsenals line up this season and the changes they haven’t made in the league. They are averaging 1 player per game and in reality it’s at left back. That’s a team that can perform as it’s the same team week in, week out and you can predict it’s as fan
Most sides have not been in that position this year and have been stretched. We ended the game yesterday with IMO 9 of our best 11 on the pitch. Last time that happened was vs Chelsea I think

You make an awful lot more individual errors when you don't have territory or possession.

Spend 10 minutes defending you might have 1 individual error. Spend 80 minutes defending and you'll have 8.

Mistakes are made with possession too. Mistakes that lead to counter attacks.

Dominating territory and possession is definitely a way to go, but it's not the only way that can work. I would like to see us get to where we have a more balanced approach, particularly in the first halves. But I don't think we need to aim for dominating territory or possession.

As others have pointed out having more players (only players) that are comfortable in possession will go some way towards rectifying that.

We need to stop signing players that aren't comfortable in possession. Even for when we play deeper, those quick line breaking moves are crucial for us and quality on the ball is needed.

Definitely agree with that. That dedicated passer in midfield is less of an issue with this system. Several other issues that are more important to sort out.

But we need everyone to be able to do their share on the ball. That is imo crucial. Looking at the best teams, sure they have some dedicated passers that are better than our best possers, but the most obvious difference imo is the lack of weak spots on the ball.

i read spence was a 'Tottenham' signing Conte said he didn't ask for him so...
conte said that many times.
imo his first choice if perisic and richarlison aren't clear improvements either. once they arrive our total goals and overall goal threats seem to be worse than last season without.

Because Kulusevski has been injured and Son has been way off form.

That's so short sighted because managers inherite players that's ain't theirs and the youth coming through ain't theirs but there is still an expectation to make it work to an extent. And there is not a manager in the world that gets the manager's job and is allowed to throw his hands in the air and say "well he ain't mine"

And at least two of them are just back from injury. The performances and results recently have been well sub par, but when three of your top choice attackers are injured and the fourth is knackered things are harder. Likewise, when one of your best defenders is out and Bambi Sanchez replaces him, it’s also harder.
I hope Levy bucks conte big time in Jan and the summer and we see what he can do.

What do you think about Suarez on a free in January? A winner, experienced, happy to sit on the bench and a bit of a clam?

yes but moura has shown he can score if you let him run at goal.
Not really
He is an awful player
His best attribute is for a small man he can win great headers
His passing is poor
His dribbling is nearly always into an area where our players are so he takes our own space
He does Scoremp many goals and rarely shoots
If he was English he would be jack ckarke level

true his randomness causes chaos but best left far up the pitch where there's less damage to our play.
his agility and sudden darts puts a lot of pressure on defence. instead of perisic and kane it should be more threatening and more fun to watch with Kane and moura as the two up front. Keep perisic on the wing to feed them crosses.
