Victor Wanyama

Good as backup I guess, but from what I've seen nowhere near good enough to challenge for a place in the first XI if everyone is fit. Reminds me a bit of Palacios, who to be fair did have some great games for us and helped us get to the CL quarter-finals before he lost it.

Can I ask who you'd have gone for over wanyama as an alternative DM?

Obviously I'm more inclined to trust Poch, Mitchell and Pleat but I'd be interested to know?

Aside from Bazoer (who presumably was far too expensive in the end) I can't think of any other realistic target who'd be better than Wanyama.

Ps please don't say rode who some ppl on here have taken to as some beast DM we could have had, based on some flippant remark from him that we wanted to sign him. Coupled with of course that he played for Bayern so must be amazing - he's not and we were not seriously after him. That I'm sure of.

We have no idea how good he would be in a Poch system. We've been happily proven wrong with comments like this so many times this past year yet we seem to persist with them. Tsk tsk

Wanyama is a good player who is good enough to challenge for a starting place, and importantly, far better than the options we have off the bench for those positions. If he doesn't get into the team, he will definitely push those in front of him. Strengthening the squad, and possibly the first team. That's what it's all about.

This, this and this

Part of the reason We didn't win the league last year IMO due to a weakness of impact subs - and that means players who can impact defensively as well as attacking

If Wanyama joins and can play better than Dier then we will be in a hell of a good position

I hope this gets confirmed, I think it's a really smart signing.

Also agree.

Would be quite nice to get the ball rolling and I do think he'd be a good addition. Not to turn it negative but I don't want to see Mason stepping in with the responsibility of shielding the defense in an away CL game coming up if Dier is injured/suspended...

Speak for yourself...only player I can think of that I've written off who's come back to prove me wrong in our team in recent years has been Kane.

It's not that I don't think he might be good backup. He does fit the boxes. But I generally like midfielders who can pass and control the ball, even better if they've got some sort of dribbling ability and can score goals once in a while. For all his strength and size, I don't think I've seen this from Wanyama so I don't see who out of Dier, Dembele or Alli he could possibly challenge for a starting place...

I can practically guarantee Poch wouldn't sign a midfielder who can't pass and control a ball....

Dier. Dier is better, so is the number 1 choice, but Wanyama provides better cover/competition for him than any other player we have in our squad currently. He's also played Poch's way and has proved himself in this league, so can come in and hit the ground running. And if the fee is only £11m, we're not gonna do better business for that money.

He certainly won't be a signing that will be putting the fear into our rivals. But at the same time, we suffered seriously if Dier, Dembele, or Kane were injured. So this to me seems a solid signing. Someone who understands the intricacies of playing for Pochettino, and serves the purpose of strengthening the squad. Also someone else mentioned it but we lost a lot of leads where perhaps bringing a player on like Wanyama could help protect those slender leads.

I think it's a solid signing and one we'd do well to complete.

The point I'm making is that he's part of a system and it could be that his role is just to be a beast defensively, while other players pick up the creative parts. And just by being that it could allow the more creative players to focus on the things they do best: create. So by plugging in one player who is excellent at what he does you can automatically make a number of other players better. Which is why it's a bit shortsighted to look at his skills in isolation and not how they would mesh with the rest of the team.

I don't think wanyama is a stambouli type signing. Poch will know his limitations and has deemed him good enough to bring in to do a job.

I'm sure poch has been given a budget to work with and wanyama ticks the boxes for poch with transfer fee and ability.

Seems to be quite a divide on peoples opinion of Wanyama. Is there any chance of a poll to see what people make of the potential deal?

Personally wouldn't see the point, vast majority would no way of seen that much of him - just the occasional game and highlights (Im sure there will be some claiming to be experts)

Better judge would be looking on SaintsWeb, they seem to be sorry hes leaving - acknowledge hes going to a better team and only real negative seems to be his dicliplinary record.....

1. I think this is a good move.
2. I think this is a bad move
3. Haven't seen much of him, but I trust Poch's judgement.
4. Levy out.
