** Tottenham Hotspur vs Fussball Club Basel 1893 OMT **

Haha do you even know what Gallas' injury is?! You really think trotting around up front chasing shadows is worth long term injury for? What a load of nonsense....

Fair point, I don't know what his injury was...

but IMHO, if you're OK to walk off the field with five minutes left, you're OK to be a presence out there, perhaps in a wide position upfront just to occupy a space on the pitch. Who said anything about 'chasing' anything? He's 35, he is not a regular, show some gonad*s and push through. if you end up hurt for a couple of weeks, that's the price. A senior pro! I once watched Roberto Baggio play 120 minutes for Italy in a WCF with his thigh so heavily strapped I thought The Mummy had returned and was snogging his leg! If you're, say, Lennon or Bale, I understand. You're an impact player of great importance. If you only play every 3-4 weeks, and there's replacements, then don't be so selfish and show some grit, even if it means needing a layoff. I agree, it's perhaps not the sensible option, but sometimes you need some fire and passion from the elders out there, a statement that you won't be giving up! All IMHO...

Soooo, Everton next ? Lucky it's at home... But then again, maybe not ! One positive to take away is that we battled our way back. I don't know if we've sacrificed our CL aspirations whilst chasing our EL ones, right now it does.

AvB's time to juggle our way out, and the rest of the lads to raise their game and get wins. My concern had been mainly at the back, but with azza and gazza out, i expect we'll be narrow going forwards, not the best IMHO.

We'll need a small miracle at Basel.

We are in 3rd for one reason and one reason only. Bale.

Like Ade, who has been a massive disappointment this season, what can you point to that AVB has done that is soooo much better than last season? We were in 3rd then too. I am endeavouring to give him time, but his signings (verts excepted) have generally been poor so far, he failed to get cover for lennon or a striker in janurary and he let all our back players go out on loan. Also some of his tactics and team selections have been outright poor.

All I can see is one world class player and no coaching that would help the rest become a "team". We were badly shown up tonight (and by Fulham) and by other teams that have a fraction of our resourses.

Dont read the Guardian - you will have to explain that remark

Can't be bothered.
as for 'telling you what AVB's done' there's pages and pages of it out there you, go digging if you give a toss. WOuldn't make a difference anyway, you have a set vision and you'll stick to it. Enjoy that.

Would you sack him at the end of the season then Pirate?

Tell you what, I hear there's an experienced 'manager' who live on the south coast that will be available in the summer...laughable, just laughable...

BTW, your comments about 'one world class player' and 'no coaching that would help the rest become a team'...come on. If you're going to say something, at least have it make some sense!

Didn't you spend every single one of your posts bashing Redknapp towards the end of last season too? Bit of a Negative Nancy mate...

Cheer up all—according to Andre, Bale hasn't got any ligaments left to damage on that ankle, anyway. Nothing in there, apparently; his right foot is just held on by magic :)

Well our semi final hopes took a massive dent tonight. Basel hadn't won away from home all season so even at 0-2 down I thought we'd get back into it, but a 2-2 draw for me isn't good enough. Basel did play very well though to their credit. Lennon going off injured was just bad news from the start, he's so important to us but no one can come away from that game today with there head held high at all, perhaps Dembele.

I don't believe we've won away from home in the Europa League this season and I think Basel are unbeaten at home so well, potentially there is our fate. But I would take a 3-3 draw of course to keep that stat alive and for us to progress, just can't see it.

Good news about Bale though with him just potentially missing two games (Everton and Basel), we haven't got a game for like 2 and a half weeks after Everton (in the Prem) so thats a positive.

For the Basel game, I would play Lloris and our first choice back 4 with the primary aim of keeping a clean sheet. THat then gives us a chance as you just need to nick a goal somewhere somehow to put us through

No. We are 3rd for a variety of reasons. Bale is one, Bale is a big one. Take him away and we are 5th, or 8th, or 15th. But take away all the other contributing factors - Lloris, Dembele, AVB, Lennon and more - and leave us with Bale and a mediocre side, and we are below QPR.

I'm gutted Gareth is probably out of Sundays match, but there's a few myths to get over.

We do not get our goals purely from Gareth Bale
He didnt score either last night. He didnt get both at Swansea. He didnt get the crucial one at Inter.

We do not have the battle and belief to fight for matches
Last night was a good result, given that we were 2-nil down at one point against a very good side. There are other games when we have had to fight to emerge with a result this year, Lyon and Inter for example, but Man U at home too, West Ham away. It's also a myth that we bottle games in the last ten minutes... we've snatched points and wins at the death a fair amount too. Plus holding off pressure from arsenal, Swansea when trying to see a game out.

We don't have the depth in squad
We have plenty of quality players are the club, but yes can get thin on certain areas. However, how can you replace Bale or even Lennon? You cannot, and while you can get close by putting in a quick winger for Lennon, Townsend for example is not half the danger Lennon is nor the defensive cover. You have to change the whole game plan for Everton. We will become narrower to a degree but we will also have to play to other players strengths now. Who knows, may even suit Adebayor more? Here's hoping.

No Lennon or Bale on Sunday but last nights fight back happened with one off the pitch and one on an of day. No Lloris either or Defoe. We do have something else out there you know!!

We have no strikers
We have three quality forwards that any other club would happily have in their squad. All been off form overall this season but injuries and ACN and a Baleshaped game plan don't help. Get behind them, remember Ade got the key goals in Europe, Dempsey against Man U.... these fellas all know what it is like to play off a streak they just need to get a bit of momentum.

We are third, we can win and lose that position and maybe even second from here. Get behind the team, it really isn't that bad a situation to be in. COYS!

yeah and when one or more of the back 5 pick up injuries you'll get the usual suspects coming out with the "why are we playing our best players in a useless competition" line

AVB cant win

QUOTE -What is football anyway? It's just a bunch of men running around the pitch kicking a ball. It means nothing at all.

Try to think of the positives.

Think of all the extra things you can do with your time now.

The death of a season can bring life to other things. Take up gardening. Learn a new hobby. Take this blow and use it to good effect.

The other choice is just to become sad and full of pain.QUOTE

This.

I tried telling my brother who I was watching it with that its only a game and he can't do anything about it so why get angry and irate over it.

I see it if we get Champions League football then great, if not then so what. It's only men kicking a ball, there are far more important things in my life than football, like health, happiness, friends and family. Yes it would be a bonus to see spurs playing elite football but I've been here for 30 years now and football continues season after season so I'm not that bothered about it.

Out of memory who won the premier league in 2006?

I have no idea. But it was won again in 2007 and the previous winners were probably forgotten about....football is kind of boring.

Difference is that at the back we have decent cover, and increasingly so with Kaboul on the way back. We have 5 CBs and 3 full backs and 2 of the CBs can also play full back

Its midfield and out wide where we needed to rotate given our lack of depth. Not having a go at AVB though as I'm a fan of his

We were pretty awful last night and deserved to be beaten but I don't believe Basel are as good as we made them look. Got the sense we may have underestimated them hugely. They were on us very quickly and suffocated us pretty much for the entire game. At times, I thought we were defending too high and that little lad on the right wing had acres to run into.

Want to make a point on Verts. People have been saying he's been great this season. He hasn't. He's been a mixed bag. The potential is there but there have been some really poor performances as well as some great ones. Last night he was absolutely dreadful. Jury, for me, is still out on him albeit I do believe there is the possibility he will be a top player. BAE was fudging woeful last night and it was an example of the guy's limitations. Seems a top lad but average left back at best. Thought Ade did pretty well. Made some good intelligent runs and I really hope the goal kick starts his season a bit (albeit there are only two months left). Siggy did some great things too, that pass for Holtby in the lead up to Parker's miss was tremendous.

I'd still be optimistic that we can win the second leg and we'll probably have to.

It's always fun with Spurs. Look very solid for three months, then commit suicide v Liverpool, not turn up against Inter, get beaten at home by bad travellers, play awful against the Swiss Champions and finish with 9 men despite having no-one sent off and have to lose sleep because it looks like our main man has injured himself for the season.

It's never fudging boring anyway.
