Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

There is so much context lacking I don't even know where to start...

I hate stats because context is lacking (like you say) BUT it was used to discuss how 'well' AVB was doing so I dont see why the TS stat cant also be used as a comparison.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Im not a Sherwood fan but last night was a special performance given the circumstances??

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

And to the answer the other point that AVB also couldn't compete with the big teams, it's like people are ignoring last season, where we beat United, City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and drew with Chelsea. Those wins were not just because we 'gave the ball to Bale' but because we were well drilled, motivated and executed a plan.

What's the difference this season? A massive core of the squad has been sold and replaced with foreigners. It's not like AVB will have forgotten how to prepare against the big teams, he simply had different players that needed moulding. I would even say the squad this year is better than last year, and will probably show it next season, but it will take time for them to get used to this league, the club and their team-mates.

We're comparing his performances THIS SEASON and comparing it to Sherwoods. This season, with the exact same set of players, both have failed miserably against rivals. Nobody is saying AVB can't compete against our rivals generally, but this season they have both failed.

Man Utd - Bale goal + two Bale assists
Emirates Marketing Project - Bale assist + Bale goal
Arsenal - Bale goal
Liverpool - Bale assist + Bale goal

We wouldn't have won any of the games against the big teams la without Bale. He scored away at Arsenal and got two assists away at Liverpool in the games we lost too.

It's funny how Bale kept scoring just enough goals to have us win games then, wasn't it? Almost like the team was well drilled and was able to shut down the opposition effectively enough to allow the star player to contribute to winning points.

Berbatov and Keane in Ramos' first season...they scored loads of goals too, great partnership, but we weren't winning as many games because the scorelines ended up being 6-4 or something ridiculous. We could just as easily play the 'if we didn't have Berba and Keane' game for that season too (which funnily enough played out the next year) and say they didn't count, but those goals counted too. It's just the team wasn't winning points.

It isn't all about just having a good player or two and magically winning games, if the team isn't well drilled points aren't going to be picked up.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

The context is very simple.

What percentage of the available Premier League points were won by these four Spurs managers (all the other managers we've had were less than 50%).

In fact, as Sherwood never had the luxury of having a pre-season to organise his squad, his achievement is even more noteworthy.

For me the context is the widening gap between the top 7 and everyone else. It's getting more and more the case that there's 26 easy matches (78 points), then the remaining 12 matches decide the order of 1-7. Please note though that I'm saying that's part of why AVB is higher than Redknapp, as well as why Timmeh comes top.

Doesn't look like Chris Ramsey has been in the army.

But just to play the game further...Man United Bale played really well but he wasn't even super Bale at this point, that wouldn't be for another couple of months. His assist was a shot parried into the path of Dempsey after a long ball from Sandro and Defoe holding it up...Townsend could have done the same thing and it wouldn't have been him saving AVB's ****.

The Emirates Marketing Project game was as much about the AVB tactical change giving Bale the platform to affect the game. We were looking dead and buried, switched to the 4-3-3 and scored 3 goals in 15 minutes.

Arsenal...Bale scored the same goal that Lennon did. It's hardly a world class superstar doing something that nobody else on the team could do and saving everyone...it's simply a forward player receiving a through ball in acres of space.

Liverpool...he scored and assisted, and because he was the best player we had...it doesn't count?

To be fair Liverpool wasn't a great performance at home, but the difference is in the other games Bale had the platform to win us the games because we scored more than the opposition. We were solid when we needed to be and won the points when we could. This season Sherwood has basically said he wouldn't be able to change the game - he's kind of admitting he couldn't do what AVB did vs Emirates Marketing Project. There's the difference.

The original argument said "without Eriksen and Ade we wouldn't have won", how can that be a valid argument if you dismiss the counter of "without Bale we wouldn't have" won ?

Either both are valid or neither.

I wasn't actually responding to that point (at least I didn't think I wasn't). Certainly I don't buy into the 'Eriksen/Ade are saving Sherwood's ****' any more than I buy into the 'Bale saved AVB's ****'. Sherwood gives individual players the freedom to play, so talent is often likely to shine against sides worse than us. I don't have an issue with Sherwood there at all.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

OMT last night: Between 7pm to 8pm last night there were a dozen posters abusing the fukk out of Sherwood for his team selection and formation pre-match. Only ONE of those posters - DeanoAustin - has had the grace and courtesy to come back after the match and admit they got it wrong. Plenty of posters expressing pleasure at the result post match, but none of them so much as mentioning Sherwood or admitting they got it so wrong before KO.

Ratings Thread: It is customary to rate the coach in these threads. At time of writing, not one of the reviews even mentions Sherwood's name.

.........

The point here isn't whether people got it right or wrong. The point is about bad faith. A lot of people can no longer claim to be calling what they see fairly, because when they had the chance to do so after the Sunderland game, they instead ran away from their dire predictions.

In fairness some people aren't pretending to be calling it objectively - Scara and GB are at least open about their mindless, cultish hatred for the guy come what may - but some of you are trying to pretend you're calling it objectively when in fact you are doing no such thing. If you were, there wouldn't be such deafening silence last night and today about Sherwood's performance last night.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Can't remember many people wanting AVB or Santini. Ramos yes because his Seville side looked so good with there attacking football.

Most people where just baffled by avb's appointment but feared another car crash because of what happened at Chelsea.

We didn't exactly get a car crash but it wasn't long before the RAC got a call out.

I actually remember a few people asking for AVB as soon as Arry went.

yep, the team he picked performed very well and he himself behaved himself on the touchline(apart from a bit of banter with an irate fan)...Chadli and paulinho did fine in midfield against a poor Sunderland but you can only beat whats in front of you. Sherwood 8
