Thomas Frank - Head Coach

So you think there’s only one level of proven? We can only ever buy the best and everything else is not worth it?
If we want to improve our forward line yes. Especially at the level we want to compete at. If we are happy being mid table or lower European contenders then no.

Edit I mean if we want to compete regularly in the CL we need to be purchasing players of the calibre of the Semenyo's Mbeumo's and Cunha's. Not with respect the Richarlisons. I mean if Richarlison was sold this window could you see him going to a Champions League chasing team?

We are not mate, we have a net spend of 0 and our last deal (which it seems we will miss out on) was a 3M bid.

I'm obviously not Frank in, but the club had abandoned him, his only chance of success was early quality recruitment in January. Instead we got a youth prospect and an opportunistic midfielder buy of same profile of what we already have to cover injuries.
Agree mate. I like Conor Gallagher, but I said at the time I didn't think he was a player that would make a big difference. Certainly not initially. Hopefully that will change.

I think it does, with respect ,when our defenders are leading the scoring.
I don't. Our defenders are leading the scoring because we score most of our goals direct from set pieces or from the second ball in immediately after a set piece, or when we're losing the game and leave a centre back up there in the final few minutes to try to hail mary an equaliser.

We're not conceding goals because we're being caught on the break with our defenders too high up the pitch attacking. We're conceding goals with our defenders back defending. The coaching is just so all over the place that they don't know what they are supposed to be doing. I thought Ashley Williams' words on MotD are worth listening to.

The midfielder is a good signing, in that he is a better number 8 than anyone else currently at the club.

I agree though that the club haven't helped Frank much. Mateta would be perfect for Frank's hoof it up or sling in a cross tactics. He could share the load with Solanke and mean that we don't need to all pray Solanke doesn't get injured in the rest of the season. It also directly weaknes a relegation rival. I am worried that we seem happy to continue until the end of the season with just a single striker capable of playing in Frank's system.

Haha, only joking. Well, partially....you are now coming to the thinking that Dubai has detailed over many years:D

Tbh, i didn't disagree with Dubai before and i don;t disagree with your broad point about this window thus far

Sigh

I still think we'll drop £50m on Savinho this week. Doesn't help Frank, as he'll likely be gone before he's fit to play. But getting in a versatile long-term target (with resale)

No chance.... The only signings we'll make (which I think will be zero) will be players who can come straight in and help us avoid relegation.

The club aren't going to be paying big money for injured players, loading up the wage bill further and increasing the risk of us going bust if we drop out of the PL this May.

Except it’s the first time the net spend being zero has happened in a window since moving into the new stadium, isn’t it? Maybe with an exception in a Jan window in the peak of Covid under Jose, if memory serves?

So it’s certainly a change from what we have been used to, but just not in the way people had hoped..

Agreed.

I feel the same about this Carrick discussion now. He’s got some good results for sure. They won today with two incredible low xG chances and rare giveaway from a tough Arsenal defence. They have some confidence and they got the breaks. I’m not gutted we didn’t bring Carrick in based on this. Equally they beat a City team that has been trying to find a Guardiolian response to the death of the positional game, and he took over a United team that was actually doing ok in a very tight league.

It's hilarious, isn't it. Especially the lamenting whinge: we missed the chance to get Carrick we moved to slow! Have to step back and see the big picture.

I mostly agree with this, but VDV's goals are in the main, not last minute ones and the Romero's champions League goal was also early in the game. So I don't think what you're saying necessarily correlates. I do take your point about set pieces though. But We also do see VDV making marauding runs up the pitch given the chance.

Btw did you watch match of the day last night? Arsenal the league leaders are 17th when it comes to scoring from ope play and 1st when it comes to set pieces goals. Now I think that will catch up with them eventually.

I did see it but it related only to that game where it was obvious we were all over the place. Some of that down to Romero losing concentration or over committing. But also Frank was trying a new defensive formation which the players were clearly not accustomed to. Williams described scenarios that didn't lead to goals as well as how poor we were for the actual goals. The one that stuck in my mind was when we were running back completely out of our defensive shape. I think we are more open now than we were in those first few games so as a result we are conceding more goals. I am not saying we are effective in attack by the way. Just there has been a change since the start.

I agree but although I liked him at Palace where he was a relatively big fish in a small pond, I wasn't overly sold on him at Chelsea. It's telling that Chelsea sold him despite him being their captain (yes I get the PSR implications around that sale). I don't think they sell players they think have the potential to be really good in the future. I must say though, I've not followed him at Atletico so can't say if he has developed other sides of his game.

And the fans and themselves.

Feel sorry for anyone who fell for the CEO notes or talk in the summer............utter gonads
Well he did say how difficult it was to get player 'trading' done in January. He seems to be a man of his word!

Just an average 8 and a young player for the future and we have a few days left. Don't get your hopes up for anything more.
